Watching in 2020: I wish they would bring back inexpensive pure Android tablets like this and its Nexus 7 predecessor. And I say that as an iPad/iPhone user.

There's no reason to get hyped over plastic Android junk, they're all identical black/grey pieces of plastic that lag and have horrendous UI/OS.

how can there be 9,000 likes when assuming the mass of ordinary matter is about 1.45×1053 kg (reference previous section) and assuming all atoms are hydrogen atoms (which in reality make up about 74% of all atoms in our galaxy by mass, see Abundance of the chemical elements), calculating the estimated total number of atoms in the universe is straight forward. Divide the mass of ordinary matter by the mass of a hydrogen atom (1.45×1053kg divided by 1.67×10−27 kg). The result is approximately 1080 hydrogen atoms. So I'm assuming this video was hacked.

Got my Nexus 9 today. Light leak is still there.
Major props for both subjectivity and objectivity. Comes from a genuine place and totally helps that your pretty much spot on as far as the hardware premium vs software experience and how that should have determined pricing but didn't. I had high hopes as well for the HTC build but it looks like I'll hold out for next years nexus. Hopefully they give HTC another shot so they can redeem themselves.

The Nexus 7 came out before (and was therefore popular before) the iPad Mini, which was absolute dogshit by comparison when the 1st gen came out.

Tablets are amazing for watching Netflix and TH-cam videos along with reading EBooks, I have the Original iPad which I received as a gift shortly after it was launched and I still use it to this day for EBooks, TH-cam, and Netflix and it does a damn good job at this, past that I could see games, but I have a 3DS so I don't really want a subpar Tablet gaming experience.

Glad I'm not alone in thinking this tablet is just not up to standard. It's overpriced, uninspiring, low build quality and under performing. I'm by no means an Apple endorser, I think Google's software is way superior to Apple's, but the iPad just walks all over the Nexus 9. With the iPad, you get a tablet with 20x more tablet optimised apps, much higher build quality and design, and better performance. You messed it up HTC and Google.

It's not a bad tablet. At all. But whoever at HTC/Google thought it'd be a great idea to price it at $399 was out of their minds. Not so much because Android tablets can't be in that price range, but more so because the overall build quality and specs of this device don't justify the price.
I mean, at least match the build quality of the iPad mini. Hell, the iPad mini 2 is $299 right now. What incentive do I - or anyone else - have to buy this over the mini 2 with that price disparity?
It baffles and frustrates me as to how asinine the pricing of this tablet is.

MaestroFire Yeah, I think the Nexus 6 design is a let down. I honestly think the Nexus 5 is one of the most beautiful phones ever made, something about its shape and size is perfect, the red one in particular is amazing. But the Nexus 6 is thicker, wider, heavier and taller than my old Galaxy Note 2, which was a huge phone anyway. People are trying to make this size the norm, but I'm confident next years Nexus won't be as big as this years one, it's just not desirable to most people.

Everyone had high expectations cuz HTC was making it. Why did HTC who are well known for their legendary hardware prowess and speakers build a tablet with such average build quality and speakers. Perhaps Google didn't let them do so. And it should've been priced lower considering it's average build quality and all.

okay so I have the nexus 9 and used to have the iPad air 2 which my son now uses, they are both great however I think I prefer the nexus overall.........I think it's the software that I prefer.
the iPad certainly add the better build materials and I think ios does still work a little better on a tablet, but my personal preference is Android and if that's the case for you also? I would say that the nexus is the best tablet to experience Android on.

Awesome review Marques, your reviews always come across as really balanced and unbiased.
It's like he ignores/doesnt even mention its terrible problems such as the build quality that doesnt stop on just the buttons, the laggy interface that takes more time to open an app than my old ass n7 2012, the lightbleed, and more. He either just flat out doesnt say anything about certain issues or hes like "oh yea and this happens" and proceeds to talk about the next awesome device/android feature. Maybe its just me, I dont know, but Im getting a bit tired of this "everything is gorgeous yay android" kind of reviews. This tablet in particular is expensive as shit for an Android tablet. He should be harsher. 6700 MaH? That sucks! Say it!

What are you talking about? He addressed all of the problems you talked about and more, said himself that it was hard to recommend, and went as far to say that people would be disappointed by the tablet if they were expecting 1 m8 quality. This is clearly a NEGATIVE review, just because he didn't rant for 8 minutes about how awful it is and offered some positives for people who might choose to overlook the downsides doesn't mean he is being an android fanboy.

Im nont a "mere hater" Ive been following mkbhd for almost 2 years. I just think he didnt go hard enough on this nexus 9. Maybe Im biased. I know people are bitching about this tablet, like people do about everything, but I'm glad google chose HTC for this one. It gave HTC a chance to get into the tablet market. I'm sure it was a learning experience and that will only mean good things for the future. Google does seem to do very good with that, they take companies and pull them over the hump. Look what they did with Motorola, they make some of the best android phones Now.
And with LG.G3 and G2 wouldn't have been so good if it wasn't for Google .

It's going to run a close to Vanilla version of Android, with Android 5.0 out of the box, and it'll have Google Play in markets where Google operates(ie: not China). Its specs are also really good for the price. Plus it will be shipping with the new USB Type-C standard. I'm a longtime Android user and I'm drooling over the thing. The only real Con the Tablet has is that it likely won't hit Western markets until around the summer of next year.
PS: The Nokia Xs were made by Nokia's mobile division that they sold to Microsoft.

Yeah this thing was a complete disappointment for those of us who had high expectations of HTC. Hope this bombs massively and HTC learns their rightful lesson.
I personally feel like HTC didn't even have anything to do with this. I think Google literally called all of the shots and just licensed the name and logo. I really do. Nothing about it says HTC based on everything else they've ever done.

They can't jeopardize their brand just because Google wants everything to be "simple" aka boring to keep the price the down. This thing is still expensive for the build quality (as noted in the vid).

benjmiester Actually this does sound like HTC. While their quality is generally pretty good, there are always glaring small issues. Like on the M7, the red/purple camera hue in low light. On the M8, same thing as the M7 if you're unlucky and the crappy UV coating on the camera lens.

Got it for my nexus 5 couple weeks ago. It really takes some getting g use to. Especially the keyboard. Once you get use to it though its amazing. Lock screen, notifications, notification bar. The battery saver does actually make a noticeable difference.

Lollipop is very good, like James said it takes some getting used to. I like the keyboard better and it feels more fluid. I'm running it on the Nexus 4. With battery saving on you get an extra 30-40% percent, but internet slows down a little.
Nestor Rasgado I own the last year model and I like him because it was tiny with a great battery life. The new Moto X is too big for my usage and the battery life is average. But yes, the design is awesome. I hope to see Sony keep going with the compact series.

Games apps and other various apps that have you double tap or tap quickly? Imagine accidently turning off your phone constantly by accident. It would annoy me to no end. Having a normal power button seems perfectly fine to me.

As most objective reviewers point out, stock Android sucks for tablets. It's just a smartphone with a big screen. The only Android tablets worth anything are Samsung and LG with their multitasking abilities for actual productivity. The rest of the Androids are just for watching videos and playing games. iPads are better for games.
that's the case for the iPad too. Tablet interfaces should be like giant phones, because people already understand their phones. they shouldn't be forced to learn yet another interface

Steve Jobs said from the start that iPads are ONLY for media consumption, not productivity. He knew from the start they were essentially useless toys, not utilities.
Honeycomb and early Jellybean made much more sense to differentiate tablets from phones, but both Google and Android have lost their way. So far the tablet hybrids with Windows are the best options.
JaySee5 and thats why android tablets suck. and thats why google is backtracking to build a single interface across all android devices.

still very biased video because is nexus. This tablet shouldnt be recommened at all. He didn't even mention about the back being soft and how there's play when the back is pushed. This is terrible built device. I wish people would stop confusing with material and built quality. Metal doesn't mean good built quality!
he clearly said that he would not recommend this tablet at this price range. maybe if it was priced cheaper then yes. its a good respectable tablet, just not a tablet that can compare to the Ipad air 2... I love android but this tablet has to be the biggest let down of the year.

Phillip Lee I've used $100s priced tablets and the Nexus 9 isn't that bad. But this definitely feels more of a $200s build quality. The Nvidia ST has similar internal specs to the Nexus 9 but way better build quality at a smaller price.

Having used the nexus 10 for a year now, and still very happy with it. I had expected a much better tablet follow up from Google Nexus ( especially on display quality and camera ) !

Great review as always! Google this Holiday season just blew me away in terms of having a very overpriced devices and i totally agree that $400+tax+delivery is too steep for any tablet the way Nexus 9 was introduced.
