Would love a comparison Duratrac RT v KO3 v Grabber ATx
I personally swear by Dura Tracs. I worked at Les Schwab for 15 years and have seen just about everything out there. I live in east Idaho and my main hobby is snowmobiling, but I also hunt/fish/camp/shoot...anything outdoors basically and I've never found a tire that did so much, so well. I drive an F150 and with my sled in the back, I can conquer the worst that Island Park and W. Yellowstone has to offer. Once this 3rd set wears low, I WILL BE getting this updated tire. Yes the BFG AT3 road a little better, but that's not important to me at all. What's most important to me is winter traction and the BFG as well as the Toyo's don't hold a candle to the Dura Trac's traction. The 3 sets I've had have all worn like iron, no cupping or feathering, but I probably pay more attention to my tires than your average consumer. The Baja Boss' and the Falken At3 are also strong considerations as some of my buddies swear by them (especially the Falken), but I'll be a Dura Trac guy for years to come. SO GLAD they didn't change too much of the original design!!
Definitely going with Duratrac RT for my next tire. Great info!
My wife: you're watching another tire video?
Great video. It seems like yesterday you were saying how dated the technology of this tire was. I noticed the new rt and knew have been looking forward to this video!
I put a set of the RT's on my 2019 Ranger a month ago, so far I love them
I requested this video a few times. Thank you very much Nathan! I’ve since got a set of the RTs and love them
Awesome, they seem like a really solid tire.
I've been waiting for this video. Thank you! I currently have DuraTrac tires on my 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab LT Z71. I've had them for 3 years now. Perhaps next year, I'll get the DuraTrac RTs installed. I bought my DuraTrac tires after the original Wrangler Fortitude HTs wore out from the 2018 / 2019 Silverado LD Z71 take-off wheels and tires that were installed on my truck when I bought it used as a one-owner dealer trade-in. I liked the Wrangler DuraTrac tires because they were OE on the new Silverado Trail Boss.
The current Duratracs have been amazing on our H3 Alpha in snow. Looking forward to trying these new ones.
Thanks for the hard work on the review. I'm super bummed about the changes. The old studded version on my f350 got through Donner pass every time ice or snow. Was great off road in the snow as well. Towed a trailer on icy roads like it was dry pavement. Gonna have to start the search over for the perfect studded winter hd truck tire.
Great analysis. I think this is my next tire.
Great review. I was an early adopter of the duratrac. This new one looks great.
This is the tire I plan on putting on my truck next, currently running the BFG KO2, it’s been a good tire but I love the Duratrac’s!!
Love the videos man. Keep it up 👍
As always, a great informative video! I've never really noticed all the differences in tire construction. Your turning me into a tire nerd! LOL I'ts a good thing. 👍👍
Welcome to the tire club... now you will find yourself just staring at new tire you have never seen before trying to map out the tread.
I ran load E Duratracs in 33” on my Tacoma with a lot of extra weight from winch/plate bumper/sliders and put 90k miles on them and they had minimal wear, and were great on rocks, snow, sand and gravel. They weren’t noisy on road either. Never had so much as a flat. They still had over 50% tread remaining when I took them off. I only changed them because they were ten years old. Didn’t want to risk dry cracking on something used for towing and off roading. Replaced them with a new set of Duratracs. Then they came out with the Kevlar like 6 months later.
Same, only I’m in an FJ. 92K on mine right now and I ordered a new set a few weeks ago that’s sitting in my buddy’s shop waiting for me to put on. I loved mine, but now I’m kind of sorry I ordered those before I knew these were coming. Oh well. 🤷♂️
Mine are twenty years old (came out of a wrecking yard) still no cracking. Am watching because I like them so much want to replace with same tire.
Thanks for the video. I'll likely run some RTs on mu XJ. Ran a set of Kevlar Duratracs on my XJ 2 sets ago, (got new wheels with crappy ATs on them, but I'm too cheap to let tires go to waste) and am running Kevlar Duratracs on my 150 currently in NorCal. Really have enjoyed this tire for years on two different trucks. Finally someone else says it, the Duratrac was the OG hybrid tire. I really can't think of a time I wished I had KO2s over the duratracs, but I never had sidewall issues with these. If this newer RT tire drives better on rode, I'm sorry to make you all mad but why spend money on a KO3 and wait 5 million years for your tire size. The Duratrac RT and Falken AT4W has you covered today for less monies.
Thanks for the video! The only real issues I've had with my traditional Duratracs have Ironically been wet rocks off road, even just damp rocks. Gave me a tough time on yansing gulch and Holy Cross in Colorado. Planning to switch to a full mud terrain in the future for the best off-road performance and then possibly switch back to the duratracs in the winter since they do so well onroad snow. If anyone has a recommendation I'll take it.
I have the cooper rugged treks now and they're my favorite truck tire so far. I like trying new tires so it'll probably be these or the falken at4w next.
I appreciated this video. I owned the old duratracs and found them loud but much better in snow than ko2's. However, they wore badly and cupped in around 30k. Alignment and improper rotation may have been the cause, not sure. One thing I find with these tire review videos is that people rarely mention slush, that dreaded point at which snow starts to melt due to salt. This condition is my biggest concern. Thanks for the info.. from Canada
Been running the og duratracks for 10 + years and never had an issue with slush, dint have an issue with too much cupping and I'm horrible with rotation
You may have the E rated tires witch is for a heavy vehicles .
Load range c
@@MontanaDirtRoads the message was for denmorin who had an issue with them being loud and cupped .You had no complaints with your tires .so that message was not for you
I second a previous comment about wanting a weight comparison
From size to size and from Load Range to Load range it is very hard to compare tires... but this pair weighs exactly the same as the BFG KO3 in a Load rannge D (these were Load Range E) - 59Lbs.... that is a full 8 lbs lighter then the Load E HD Falken AT4w.... so they are a Light tire... pretty impressive weight considering they Beefed them up.
Great review! One thing that's almost never mentioned is the depth of the sipes. So many tires that LOOK like they'll provide good wet and snow traction have sipes that are hardly more than cosmetic; within 5,000-10,000 miles, they've disappeared as the initial "siped" layer of each tread block wears down. There are few tires that have full-depth sipes.
Really enjoy your show man. Love your hat so not only do I dig the show but I now have hat envy. Thank you for breaking down a lot of the off road world for me. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it... also you can buy a hat if you really want one... I actually just made three tonight and shipped then out. Hats - geni.us/OutdoorAutoHats
I loved Duratracs when I had to drive through deep spring slush on top of soft gravel roads for my daily commute. The new sidewall with the old tread pattern would be about the ultimate tire for rural areas with a lot of unpaved roads.
Super great and thought out video! Please compare these new R/Ts to the Mickey Thompson Baja boss A/T.
That is a good comparison... definitley tires going after a similar need.
@@OutdoorAuto yes sir! As a matter of fact I’m trying to find a better A/T than the. Baja boss at. My dad has those and they are super great! It’s doubled the amount of miles he has ever had on his truck
Love these videos!
Been a big fan of the old ones, not too excited about the smaller voids but definitely considering trying them out.
Thank you so much for the explanation. Excellent video.👍🏻👏🏻
Nicely done sir
Been running Dura tracks for a while now. On my Diesel and half ton. Farm and live in the country on gravel roads in western Canada. We see all the seasons for these tires they are good tires.
Great review. I have a 2020 Ram Rebel - Duratracs came stock. I've been considering the new RTs and the KO3s, and i think the RTs are best for my home environment.
I see the RT’s as a big improvement
I have the old pattern that's only 1/4 worn that I loved now I want the new one after watching this , thanks for a great review on these tyre's you've cost me more money😂
oh no!... well they will be around for a while so use up the ones you have first.
If you do mud a lot, get MT's. This looks like a great all round tyre for most people. Snow is something a lot of people in USA will drive in on a daily basis. Wet roads is my concern as mine are on a daily driver, see's mud maybe once a year. I'm more sand/rock 4 wheeling.
Still, it looks good but for now...AT3W Falkens will do me, they are nice and quiet too.
I was going to get a set of these but instead got Falken rubitrek couldn’t be happier very quiet and deep tread depth…
The Rubitreks are unsung heros... if you can get them in your size they are pretty good tires.
Awesome video! So informative & well explained. I have the old Duratracs because my car came with them & the dreaded 19 inch wheels. Can’t fit anything smaller because of the calipers. Will the new Duratracs ever be available for 19” wheels?
I am sure they will... New tire releases always start with the most common sizes and work toward the less popular... so it could be a minute
I see you have two 285s there, how about weight difference between the two tires? What does a 285 weight? Thanks for all the great info. I’ve always been a big fan of duratracs.
I was always a fan of the GY ultra terrain that nobody really talks about. I wanted to try the RT when i got tires but there wasn't a 35 or 315. I bought a set of the new Falkens. So far so good.
Yeah I’m assuming they will come out with more and larger sizes. I run the 285 75r18, and I don’t see that it’s available in the RT.
I did not see 35 inch RT for my Power Wagon yet. I have had good luck with the Duratrac and they have the best snow traction I have seen.
Alaskan here: I love my Duratracs but if you want top notch snow traction out of an AT tire, go with Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws. Can't beat them. Quieter than the Duratracs too.
What is the weight difference if any on comparison to same size tire ? Good video 👍
Great video
The random placement of the goodyear shoe symbol isn't random. It shows the location of the treadwear indicator. Michelin does the same thing with their Bib mascot. Bfg put a triangle.
I've got load range C Duratrac OEM on a Trailboss 1500. I put that truck in a ditch full of blast rock. Got some deep gouges in one wheel. The tire was fine. I've heard the rumors about the Duratrac having a weak sidewall. I offroad a fair amount, and I've sold tires for 10 years . I've never seen a sidewall failure on a Duratrac.
Well… on the bright side, the new ones are stronger
I have Duratracs on my Colorado and RT's on my Land Rover. They're both great in all conditions until around 20k, then they feel like hockey pucks on wet roads. They'll still have plenty of tread past 50k but there is no wet weather confidence past 20k.
You can still put screw in studs in them. I do that with the Nitto Ridgegrapplers. The sidewalls aren’t just looks. On rock formations they can make a big difference. In deep mud they can make a difference. As mentioned when you air down as well.
I appreciate the review
I understand sidewall isn’t just for looks it just happens to be the biggest driver in off-road tire sales right now. As far as studs… you can drill any tire for studs, I was the fact that they don’t come pre drilled anymore
I hope they change their mind on the studs someday. They are my favorite tire for the winter cross winds that create a sheet of ice here in north Nevada. Otherwise it looks good to me. Wanna know how it stacks up against the Mickey t’s baja boss.
Yours are made in Chile? I've just put a set on in Australia and they're made in china, and no kevlar or the micro inner tread on the tyre face. Didn't realise until after they went on.
The tread on one the duratecs i had on my 2016 f250 literally separated from the tire, like it unglued and peeled off...
..
Can we get a review of the Firestone Destination X/T tires. Look like the would be a good tire for those of use spending a lot of time on the road trailering but good A/T option
I recently put a set of the Goodyear Wrangler tires on my Jeep. The same ones that come stock on some of the Broncos and Ram TRX. Any thoughts or experience with this tire? These tires only cost me $775 for 4 in 315/70R17. It's kind of hard to go wrong for that cheap.
I can confirm the new RT captures & spits rocks a lot more than the previous version. Duratracs on F150 since 2011 (among many other brands - always back to Duratrac), on F250 since 2020, changed to Duratrac RT in April 2024.
The old Duratrac's have been great on my Jeep XJ for about 11 years now lol and my Silverado 2500HD. I'm not sure if I'll replace them with new ones or switch to Mastercraft CXT's. We use the CXT's on some of our work pickups and they've been just as good in rain, mud and snow as the Duratracs and a good bit cheaper.
Well presented.
I’ve had the Duratrac RT on my Tacoma for about 7k miles. No chipping yet, but I haven’t abused them offroad much. In the snow of NW IA they performed fantastic last winter. Better than the OG Duratrac IMO and the Kenda Klever RT that they replaced. I think overall it performs better 98% of the time than the old ones. The other 2% is mud, but I will avoid mud at all costs, it’s just nasty. lol
Your assessment makes a lot of sense to me... sounds liek they were a solid tire choice for your circumstances.
Is there a weight difference on comparison to same size tires ?
Ive had 2 vehicles with duratracs and for snow abd gravel they excelled...but on the gighway they had a severe vibration on both vehicles...turns out the wiggly type of vibration was caused by the weak sidewall...u touched on it 4 a second but it was a horrible tire on the blacktop especially with weight...had to run em at max 80 pound just to keeo it on the road...i wanna know much more about the sidewall strength
Damn… idk whether to go BFGoodrich , Goodyear or Michelin based off of your recent videos
it's 11pm on a saturday and i'm watching a review on truck tires. I don't own a truck ... damn i'm a nerd.
Again.. I’m not buying a foreign tire from an American company that keeps sending jobs overseas. That why I buy Nitto, Toyo, or Yokohama which are foreign companies that have made the US their home, creating large numbers of US jobs and major investments into the US economic success. Yokohama makes most of its off road tires in the US. BFG (Michelin) also have invested huge amounts into the US.
Goodyear will probably have no tires made in the US in 10 years.
What about the new RT vs Falken Wildpeak AT Trail?
What a fantastic and comprehensive review, thanks very much! My question is, the DuratracRT isn't marketed as having Kevlar in Australia. Do you know if it is a different carcass or if it doesn't have kevlar unlike the ones you have. Possibly a difference with country of manufacture as I've noticed they are manufactured in USA, Mexico and Chile? I've run the MT/R with Kevlar as it had such a strong carcass for remote touring and am hoping to retain a kevlar carcass with real offroad ability.
I heard from someone else that the ones sold in Australia are from China... and it did appear that they were not quite the same... I would need more info... curious if he had an old Wrangler Duratrac or the new R/T
It's was me. I have the new model RT here in aus. Made in goodyears china factory, which doesn't phase me too much as most of the big names have factories in china. Tread pattern, depth and compound I've been led to believe are the same, although no kevlar. 3 ply sidewall. Have been good on the road so far, but haven't been up bush yet.
BALANCING-VIBRATION Issue with current Duratracs on my ‘21 GMC AT4. A truly love/hate relationship. Love them at lower speed use, especially on gravel and snow covered roads and terrain, but absolutely hate them on the highway. I have had them rebalanced twice within the current 20k miles on them, and still get a most annoying vibration starting at about 70 mph and completely disruptive above 75 to a point where I feel there is harm being done to wheel bearings and other body/frame connections. Still can’t tell if it is just one of the four tires or more. Would really like to know if Goodyear has a customer support option where you can discuss with an actual tire engineer who can assess how much unbalancing we should be accepting with regard to a road and trail tire. i.e.- Can these newly designed tires be balanced and installed to allow smooth driving at 80-85 mph, which is pretty common now on most of the interstates. If the tires are restricted to 70 and under due to off-road design characteristics, we should know that before we buy them. And in the case of my truck, these are the original tires, so no, the issue isn’t with my truck’s wheels or suspension. (20k for mileage & never any major impact to wheels)
Them not changing the rubber compound will hopefully recreate the top performance in snow that the og has.
Had these for 3 months… piece of sidewall chunked out with some moderate wheeling…
granted they were 4ply, but still had the 3 ply sidewall.
I took them off and went with the new falken Wildpeaks.
Can’t be messing around with sidewall punctures the places I go… doesn’t seem like the sidewall has been fixed
Big improvement for the majority of people.
Would love to see your take on the unpopular cuz it doesn’t look as cool Nokian Outpost AT
I worked for a county in a mountain town in Colorado, I maintained county vehicles, all the sheriffs department trucks and rescue trucks. We exclusively used Duratracs, they were an absolute nightmare! Constant uneven wear, constantly out of balance which made me have to rebalance every time vehicles came in for an oil change, 3K miles, ridiculous! We switched to BFG’s and all those issues went away. Stay away from Duratracs is what this professional would tell you.
Weird. I've had the polar opposite with them.
I put 80k on a set of duratracs with 5tire rotation every 10k. No issues with mine
Gotta rotate them. They will go nearly 100k if rotated every 5k
Does the Duratrac RT have full depth sipes?
Went from the old duratrac to a maxxis razr at. It was a very cheap 35x12.5 compared to the other well known brands in the US. Literally saved $100 a tire compared to the big names these days like ridge grappler or Mickey T Bajas. I picked them up cuz the Aussies swear by maxxis and they know a good tire brand. So far they have been way better than the OLD duratracs at pretty much everything. Now it has me wondering how they stack up against the new duratracs. Not that I have any regrets, I never get the same tire/brand a second time in a row. I always try something different.
The new rt will probably be my new winter tire if the price isn't ridiculous. I'm trading up from at3w's imo.
Is the new siping now gonna be full depth for longer-sustained traction? Cuz the old ones certainly were NOT
Yes it's full depth according to another Australian video
They should have changed up the compound. The Duratrac is extremely susceptible to tread chunking and chipping. Hopefully, the reinforcement will help with the terrible cupping and feathering issues.
I wish this was available as a 37x12.50R17.
I wish I could find a 255/85R16 in load range C
AWESOME REVIEW !!!!! ( AS ALWAYS !!!!!!) I am one of those that LOVED the OG DURATRACS ( I Have Had several sets) And looking forward to trying THESE out !!!!! I'M Currently running the FALKEN Wildpeak AT 4'S on my Taco now, and just REALLY curious to the difference..
These are definitely more aggressive as an R/T tire, so they are going to be a bit louder and not quite as friendly on road... but they will kill it in the mud and rough off-road.
Are the new RT's mountain and snowflake rated? 275 55 20 size
The R/Ts are now snow flake rated... the extra sipes got them over the line.
"If you find yourself one of the 5 people watching this video right now"... when I was literally the 5th view of the video.
Dang... You should win something
Are the new RT’s available in 37’s on 17” rims?
Tire rack has all the current sizes listed - geni.us/DuratracRT
Get this bad boy up against the Cooper ST Maxx!
they look good
I was plesantly surprised... I wasn't expecting them to be this good actually.
What’s your go to A/T tire? Top 1 and 2
I’ve ran Duratracs since 2011 on a Tahoe and now a Yukon Denali XL. Hands down best tires I’ve ever owned. I keep them rotated, run 40psi in them and keep my alignment spot on. Never have I had issues with uneven tread wear or cupping. They are not cheap but I get 70,000 miles out of them. Ran 295x65x18 on my Tahoe and 305x55x20 on my Denali….
Great review. I had a set of Duratracs here in Northern Canada and I loved everything about them except how terribly loud they were. Is there anything else that is as good in ice, snow and mud, but is quieter?
Falken AT4W are pretty good in all those settings… the new Goodyear RT’s will be a bit quieter too
@@OutdoorAuto Whats your thoughts on the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT and Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek?
I got the duratrack in 09 when they came out. I agree first tweener tire and a very weak sidewall. But the newest duratrack SUCK in mud conditions and not a very good tire on our work trucks
I’d bet people love them on road, dirt gravel… really everything but mud… cause they take a step back there for sure
So its between Duratrac RT and KO3... (For a Hilux, a fairly light vehicle, just 2,2 ton)
AT3W is not sold here, and probably not AT4W, so not an option
I perchase a set of the new RT and they say made in Mexico
If the Duratrac RT came out 4 years ago, I would have been genuinely excited about it. I believe they went the opposite direction from what made the Duratrac a fantastic tire. But I guess I will have to admire this tire on other people's rigs. I already found my new Go - to tire. Its not this one. It is an RT though
I love these reviews!
What RT are you liking? I am testing quite a few right now.
I still don't like the void reduction. Feels like they took one step forward by beefing up the sidewall/ply and one step back by decreasing the void. Not a deal breaker but you definitely want mud capability when it's encountered on the trail. The rest of the features like added siping, tread reinforcement, etc is enough road improvement that they didn't need to mess with the air gaps.
Yeah, they definitely pursued making it a more road friendly tire... the deal there is it now applies to a MUCH wider audience...
Please Goodyear, offer the new RT in 315/75R16
regular dry traction is the least of my concern, i dont get stuck on pavement i get stuck in mud
True… but not a lot of crashes happen in mud 🤷♂️
@@OutdoorAuto also true but the gap is far smaller between the best and worst dry traction at tire than it is between the best and worst mud traction at tire. i dont fear crashing driving around town with mud tires but i do fear getting stuck in the middle of nowhere and having to wait or walk hours to get out. like everything its case by case i suppose as to what individual people value more.
After this video... I have a question. New Duratrac RT or Falken AT4W for HD Truck in Heavy Winter area?
If you do more deep snow and off-road snow then probably the Duratrac... but if you want it to be a more balanced tire for lots of freeway, I'd probably go AT4W
The old duractracs would go well beyond 50k if rotated every 5k miles. I’m not sure changing it will make it better.
How odd not to make 265/75R16 tire...
Great tire. But they get very noisy towards the end of there life
As the owner of a lifted Bronco Sport Badlands, I'd have already bought a set of these if they came in an XL load rated 245/65/17 but a few people say both a 245/70/17 and a 255/65/17 will fit on a lifted BS, both of which are also XL load rated.
My questions are
1. Are the Xl load rated tires also 3 ply sidewalls? I've never heard of that happening before, on any XL tire but saw a statement from a GY rep elsewhere, that all of the RT were 3 ply sidewalls.
2nd question, How do you think these will compare to the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss's, I already have?
Toyo doesn't make the RidgeGrappler, Nitto does
Toyo owns Nitto
Yeah... that is why I have text IN THE ACTUAL video that says *Toyo Owns Nittio....
I had the old Duratracs and they were super noisy. And didn't track the best in the highway. Wasn't a fan.
A common complaint on the old ones was that the would "float"... which makes sense... they definitley tried to improve that with the new ones... still probably wont track quite as good as the Falken At4w and BFG KO3's... but those tires also aren't great for mud.
Good video - but Goodyear lost my $$$ when you said ‘Chile’...too many other good U.S. / Canadian made tires out there...
*Sells BFGoodrich stocks*
If its not Made in the USA thats a NO for me dawg.
Duratrac is the best tire, and the new RT with the 3 ply sidewall is even better.
My only concern is in the deep clay/mud, where I think the old one with bigger voids would do it better.
I still think that Goodyear just had to put a 3 ply sidewall in the old design with bigger voids, and that would be the perfect Duratrac...
But anyway, if you want to excel in deep clay/mud you should go for the Wrangler Boulder, right?
