  • The World's First McDonalds - Ever!
    Once a hot spot on Route 66, this place is now located on a quiet suburban street. Although the original building was replaced by the McDonald Brothers' classic "Golden Arches" design in the 50s, and later torn out altogether, the site was saved from demolition by Juan Pollo founder Albert Okura and turned into an unofficial McDonald's museum.
    Admission is free! I tried to get in contact with Juan Pollo about filming, but never received an answer, so I just sort of showed up and had a "Shhh" party of my own for a few hours. This is just a quick look at the museum and a quick review of the first McDonald's history. Some day we hope to revisit the museum and interview the owner, and we're definitely going to have to spend some more time on McDonalds' fascinating history as well.
    The Adventures are now on our NEW CHANNEL: / justinscarred
    NEW MERCH! store.randomland.com (2021 and beyond!)
    As ever, THANK YOU for watching! :)
    PS: Thanks to Brian D Buckley for stopping by that day and braving the incredible HEAT inside that building! Whew!!!!!!
    Visit the McDonald's Museum Website to learn more and find out how to donate your McDonald's items! : juanpollo.com/route-66-attract...

    That is so cool you did a show there! I grew up in San Bernardino. Went to SBHS just down the street a block or so from there! Passed by that building a million times. Such a neat little piece of history.

    The first 60 seconds what a stand up guy to buy the land and keep it OG and still left 3/4 of the building open to public for free... If you ask me McDonald's owes him more than a fucking happy meal.

    • @LiveFastDiePoor
      @LiveFastDiePoor  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree! Apparently the owner's had a bit of trouble here and there with the corporation, but so far through thick and thin he's managed to keep the place open to the public... for FREE!

    I remember the merry go round thing and the hamburger jail looking thing from when i was young. Makes you remember all the characters they eliminated. You dont even really see grimmace or any of them anymore... only on those plastic bibs for the kids. Even Ronald appears less and less.

  • @ltrich50
    @ltrich50 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I remember my sister had the playskool McDonald's play set and I had one of the wastebasket banks.
    Those were characters too.
    Kicking myself that I didn't keep it, but I was around five years old when I got it. I'm pushing 50 now.

    That's another great video. And there is still so much more to the story. There in the parking lot, the McDonald's operation inspired a couple high school friends, Glen Bell and Neil Baker, to start a fast food restaurant. Bell's Burgers introduced the first fast food taco. Neil Baker followed up with his own restaurant, Baker's Drive Thru. Glen Bell went on to start Taco Tia, El Taco and his most famous restaurant chain, Taco Bell. A cook from Taco Tia, Ed Hackbarth, started Del Taco. An associate of Glen Bell's, John Galardi, started Der Wienerschnitzel.

    • @spel10001
      @spel10001 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glen Bell's wife named Der Wienerschnitzel.

    • @BrettJeffries
      @BrettJeffries 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Glen Bell's wife really did come up with the name! I recently found out that I have a vague connection to the story. A common thread to the beginnings of fast food is Murray's Restaurant Supply in Colton. He supplied the McDonald brothers, Glen Bell and Neil Baker. My parents and grandparents even bought their drug store soda fountain supplies from Cecil Murray. My older brother once told me that he remembered Cecil Murray because he never knew anybody else named Cecil. The architecture of my business was based on a restaurant in Redlands called the Burger Bar, which was based on McDonald's "burger bar." It had a Googie-like style. I wonder if that is where Walt Disney got the name of the Tomorrowland Space Bar, because the Burger Bar was once a prominent restaurant on the road to Palm Springs. I know the Taco Tia across the street, along with other restaurants in Redlands, was popular with celebrities.

    • @spel10001
      @spel10001 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaking of Googie architecture I went to the oldest remaining Bob's Big boy last night and went and took pics of the very first Ihop which was located across the street. You can still see the pitched roof and Ihop style windows but they removed the sign recently.

    • @BrettJeffries
      @BrettJeffries 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which Bob's is that? I've been to the classic one in Toluca Lake, near Warner Bros. There's a newer Bob's Big Boy (built in 1998) just down the street from me here in Calimesa. I mention that one because Ben Stein wrote that he stops there on the way to Rancho Mirage and likes the food.

    • @spel10001
      @spel10001 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually Burbank but yeah, that's the oldest remaining Bob's. The first Bob's was in Glendale Ca. but it is no longer there. Did you know that McDonald's created the Big Mac to Compete against the Big Boy Burger? That's why the Big Mac looks like a rip off of the Big Boy with the 3 slices of bread and shredded lettuce.

    I have been to this original McDonalds location once with a friend...it's great. I love all the classic toys they have. My favorite though is the climb up hamburger tower they have out front. I'm thirty two and I remember playing with all those play place artifacts. You should continue the Juan Pollo videos and go to Roys cafe in Amboy, which is a town also owned by the owner of Juan Pollo. Great route 66 hotel. I would love to see what info you dig up on that place. If you have fans of route 66 or are a fan of it yourself, also check out Oatman Az. They have wild donkeys running the street and it used to be a mining town.

    Love your show and gave a thumbs up, but I don't eat McDonald's.

      It's ok, I can't eat McDonalds even if I wanted to since almost everything there's a risk for wheat allergy. :/

      I know this is a McDonald's video, but what is Disneys corporate stance on GMO's?
