- The first McDonald's site and unofficial Original McDonald's Museum in San Bernardino, California is a really fun stop on Route 66 and is filled with a ton of nostalgia. McDonald's is a huge part of American culture of the last 70 years and this is where it all started. the McDonald brothers moved their barbecue restaurant to this site in 1940. Later they realized that most of their sales were coming from hamburgers. So they shut down for 3 months in 1948 and reopened as a hamburger stand, and thus McDonald's was born. The original McDonald's building is long gone, but currently there is an excellent museum on site.
The museum features a ton of McDonald's history, especially when it comes to Happy Meals. The Happy Meal collection is insane. There is also a ton of other memorabilia, and even props from the Michael Keaton movie, The Founder.
The Original McDonald's Site and Museum is located at 1398 N E St, San Bernardino, CA 92405.

Sadly Albert Okura passed away January 27, 2023 and this video you made was a great way to celebrate his life. Albert grew up in Wilmington Ca, and his Father was already serving in the US military before WW2. Rest in Peace Albert
❤
I've driven by thousands of time's and never thought to take a tour through the museum. That's definitely a staple in the city of San Bernardino Ca.
I live in Riverside. I went to the museum a few times over the year. Its definitely worth checking out.
I went in there starving and had to eat a 60 year old burger
Been there, it’s very cool! Like a blast from the past!
Also the historic Wig Wam motel isn’t far from this place too.
I overlooked the Juan Pollo museum and Amboy exhibit part. I love Juan Pollo though! And the military museum was closed when I went as well. I need to go back again.
Wig wam motel I called the tee pee hotel
I remember getting a cheeseburger fries and drink and getting back a Nickel change in Manassas, Va back in the mid sixties. Interesting and informative video, thanks!
That mural is NUTS! 😲 I can't even imagine how long it would take to see everything in it. And yeah... looking at the happy meal toys must be a trip. To stop and note how many we might have had as kids. The feels...! (and yes, I definitely remember the transformer style ones. As well as the little Halloween nuggets even though I wasn't quite a kid anymore when those came out).
My aunt actually collected the McNugget ones and still has them on display in her house to this day.
@@SidetrackAdventures At least hers haven't ended up in a landfill. Nice that she's still enjoying them.
E Street and Kendall Drive were "City Route US 66." The main highway (along with US 91 and 395) used Mount Vernon Avenue and Cajon Boulevard, on the west side of the city.
My favorite happy meal toy was far and away the Muppet Babies toys. I remember when I was 8 or 9, I was playing with my Muppet Baby toys at a house that my grandma cleaned. Either an older high school or college girl from the family saw me playing with them and she wanted to see all the ones that I had because she loved the cartoon and collected the toys as well. I’m pretty sure that’s the first time I fell in love in my life. LOL!
Def digged the McDonald’s/Transformer happy meal. That’s the one I remember the most and the Bernstein bear one too
I had totally forgot about the Bernstein Bears ones until I saw them again at the museum. Apparently some of the Transformer ones are worth some money now.
@@SidetrackAdventures sigh….I wouldn’t doubt it. Knew I should have held onto them
Awesome video. Great history lesson of MCD.
We checked that place out a few years ago, pretty cool👍
Good stuff MrSteve☺️
I was in the California conservation corps in 92/93 living in the area for a year..walked past the place unfortunately it was closed...I wished I had visited it before I moved home back up to northern cali...
This is a fantastic video. I didn't know a museum existed.
A big part of childhood here in Canada, too! I can still remember when they had the character statues in the dining areas. 🙂
Suburban Chicago was the location of my earliest McDonald's memory. Probably rode my bike over to one, bought their basic burger, fries & Coke using 2 dimes & 5 pennies in early '60s.
Lake Michigan is the starting point of Route 66.
My favorite McDonald's toy was the Astrosniks alien figurines. My parents sold jewelry at flea markets when I was a kid, and would give me a few bucks to spend, which I usually spent on either coins (buffalo nickels and wheat pennies) or McDonald's toys.
Simply amazing. Good memories ever!!!
Very cool! I've been to the oldest McDonald's in Downey, which has a much smaller museum. I also found the next oldest original McDonald's structure - now a donut store - in Brea. The area was industrial, a little sketchy, & a parking lot full of potholes, but it was still cool to see! I'll have to head over to SB to see this one! Good video!
We've been wanting to check out the one in Downey. Looks real cool.
@@SidetrackAdventures it is pretty cool! And I'll be honest, it was one of the freshest, tastiest big macs I've ever had!
I found your video on the Mac Donald's museum fascinating as I live about 2 miles from it and have never been visited there, funny because it is so close.
Feel very badly about being priced out of McDonalds. Many fond memories.
Great vid thanks
I lived one this street I grew up around this place walking from San Bernardino High School was so fun
All I need to know is does the museum have the only working ice cream machine.
I had that mario on the spring, but my favorite were the transformer toys that looked like McDonalds food containers.
McDonaldland cookies...miss those
The original was right next to San Bernardino High School. Remember it well.
I pray for you guys McDonald's original stay open for ever
I think we were in there for at least 3 hours, trying to look at everything. I remember when their basic hamburger was 12 cents.
I remember the Star Trek happy meals when the movie came out in 1979
McDonald's is my favorite fast food joint. It is senior-friendly.
Just checked it out today saw my boy grimace happy belated birthday grimace
Happy meal toys when i was a kid werent very good….but when i got old enough to work and started at a McD’s i was kind of jealous on how good the toys had gotten LOL
I went there today I couldn’t go in there though we went to early my dad showed me he said that it’s a museum now because it was one of the first McDonald’s restaurant that was ever made
The building behind the museum is the original office and warehouse for McDonalds.
Historical places route 66 and mcdonalds
Does it have a Busted Ice Cream machine aswell?
😍The batmobile that turns into the bat missile from Batman Returns.
wow
Interesting. Couldn't eat the stuff though. Thanks from the U.K.
Man when I went to la I seen one when was on the bus that said they accept food stamps and I know not every place is the same but like man I could just imagine if they accepted that in the mcdonalds in new york here
I use to have the cartoon movie on vhs 📼
Un aperçu de mon prochain voyage lorsqu on le pourra
Ray Kroc swindled the brothers.
I miss mcdonalds
Love their french fries.
Is the Orange County McDonalds that retained the Golden Arches architecture still there??
I live around the corner of that muesuem my school is more down lol
When I saw the happy meals being served in the 70's I was taken back, I know we did not serve them when I worked at one in 78/79. Checked Wikipedia and they started serving them in June 1979 a few weeks after I had quit.
Wow, hadn't realized they started them so late. Imagine how much extra money McDonalds has made by just adding a box and a toy to the food.
@@SidetrackAdventures Yes, but what have they done since to counteract plastic pollution?
Isn’t Richard and Maurice McDonald is the real McDonald? Ray Kroc just basically bought their entire idea.
Changing color Hot Wheels
It looks so cool, will visit. The only part I don’t like is how Michael Keaton (movie) stole McDonalds under the original owners nose. He cheated them out of a lot of money!!!!
no thanks to ray croc they destroyed the original site when he should have kept the original as historic landmark
🤓🤭 happy meal toy. The E.T poster that was always covered in grease. 😂
The old time glass mcdonalds cups i liked Mcdonald land characters happy meal toys food
Opinions?, no, not opinions
Guess we're am sweety
yes Ray Kroc bought it then screwed the original brothers out of the company completely. yes we know.
Ray Kroc was the real snake. Sadly McDonald brothers never got to see this.
Route 66 is 5th Street in San Bernardino's downtown. .
13th St. & E St. is uptown....NOT on Route 66.
Your title & information is incorrect.
I'm sorry but Route 66 certainly was on E St. in San Bernardino. There were two alignments of Route 66 through the city, and E St between Kendall and 5th St. was part of the City Alignment. Hence why there are Route 66 signs everywhere and the Route 66 shield is literally painted on the road. Don't take my word though, Google it or refer to any number of Route 66 guides.
Ray Kroc was a thief. My two cents.
Why is this not the first McDonald’s you should start googling your Your information because the first McDonald’s is in Downey off of Florence in Lakewood so now you just talking just to be talking in the video like this is dumb. You gonna let these people lie to you. You got so excited that you made a video about this damn.
No. The restaurant in Downey is the oldest, but it wasn't the first.
@@vibingwithvinyl that doesn’t make sense it’s the oldest but not the first shouldn’t your grandma come before your mother?
@@DuMac123it's the oldest that's still open as a fast food joint and google
@@user-ui6yg4fh1h what are you talking about?
The original McDonald's burger was cooked onsite. The fries were fried in beef tallow, omg. Today's food is a pale imitation. Precooked, prepackaged. 🤢🤮
I've heard the original recipe was good. Now their just sell outs. Making unhealthy food. I'm ashamed of how much my parents made me eat this processed food
I haven't eaten that garbage since may of 2015. Nothing, not even ice cream or water.
Happy meals were pure genius. My kids, born in the early 80's could spot the golden arches a mile away and would whine about how bad the wanted a happy meal. Get the meal, open the box, play with the toy and the dog would eat the cold burger and soggy fries 3 hour later. Blame their generation"s short comings on parents like me. The original enabler, baby on board morons
