I had a Medela with my daughter & it was aggressive. Even at the lowest settings. My sister had the spectra with my youngest niece & said it was more gentle. So I just ordered the spectra! Can’t wait for little man to come! ❤️💙
I’m so glad I saw your comment. My twins are due in December and The last time I breastfed (8 years ago) I had low milk supply… so I wanna go into this prepared as possible to master the art of breastfeeding haha 😊
This video was so incredibly helpful, thank you! The fact that you turned on each device and explained all it's features made this a much easier decision for me. Wonderful video!
I found the Medela pump to be agressive and a bit loud, but it gets the job done. The Spectra is more gentle and has more options, but I found it generally too weak and didn't work well for me. The potable BellaBaby and Willow pumps worked well and both are batter powered; they are my favorites!
thank you ❤I just can't waith to use it for my son. I have a spectra S1. With my first son I had no ideea what am I going into and I just bhought a cheap one.
You’re pumping backwards! The quick sucks mimic a baby encouraging let down and the longer suck mimic the actual feed. The spectra only goes up to a vacuum level 5 on the let down function (quick sucks) but goes up to a 12 on the expression mode (long sucks)
Thank you! I was thinking I was wrong in my teaching because I always tell my clients the fast is to initiate let down and longer slower but stronger sucking should be once let down happens. This is a really great video though! Thank you!
Yes I’m sorry for the mis information! A new video is out this week that address that and also a few other common pumping mistakes. Should be a good one!
I had a Medela with my 2nd baby. I hated it. My 3rd baby I rented out a hospital grade pump from wic. Loved it. My 4th baby I just ordered the spectra. I'm 21 weeks. So hopefully I'll love it
I had the spectra s2 it was incredible I told my husband I will be getting a spectra again but this time I’m going to try s1 the spectra brand is incredible. Now for new moms beware with the spectra you do have to pay attention more to what you are doing unlike with the other but you will love it.

Wow! I had no idea the Spectra pump had so many cool features. Thanks for sharing!
I like the Madela pump it’s smaller it’s portable with the battery pack, yes it takes 8 AA batteries but they last a very long time. I have the backpack for it as well. I’m a nurse and I do 12 hour shifts on a very busy floor. I’m always running especially when I need to pump, the Madela works great because it pumps 6 to 7 ounces in 6 minutes sometimes 5, yes I time myself. The Madela pump is a little louder but that’s ok.
Medela replacement parts and accessories are much easier to find too! Especially if your hospital has a NICU, they likely have Medela pump stuff around. Glad to hear it’s working well for you! It really is a great pump.
For me 15-20+++sessions, I use the Sams club brand batteries (non rechargeable ). I only use the battery pack at work. At home I’ll plug it into the wall. Also my let down is quick making my pumping sessions short. That’s why my batteries last longer.
Thanks for this video! My doctor recommended the Spectra, but also said Medela is good as well...so I was glad to find a comparison of the two. I think I'll go with the Spectra!
Thanks for this review! I used medela with my first and wasn’t impressed, been thinking of making the switch for this new baby instead of getting another medela ... diff think I’m going with the spectra this time!
I got the evenflo though my insurance & I hate it. I now have the pleasure of paying for a pump out of pocket & was considering the medela since I used the symphony in the hospital & loved it. I saw alot of TH-cam moms used the spectra and wanted a comparison of the two. This video was so informative !! Theres obviously clear winner for me so Thank you!
Insurance has always given me the Medela, but I honestly haven’t had great luck with it. Definitely going to be checking out Spectra. Thanks for the info!
Could you make an updated version of this video? I have the medela but a lot of what you said no longer applies in 2024. (I’m considering switching to spectra but hesitant to spend the $)
Thank you for making this!!! This was super helpful! I’m expecting my first baby in July and I’m a little clueless when it comes to things like this. I need to register soon, and wasn’t sure what pump I wanted. The bag you use is adorable as well. ☺️☺️
Thank you so much! I love sweet first time moms like you!! Make sure you check with your insurance and see if they cover a pump for you :) there’s a step by step link for that in the description. This bag is AWESOME! If you haven’t watched the video on that bag, make sure you do. I recommend it to everyone!! Good luck with your little one in July! 💚💚
First check with your insurance company to see if you can get a free one! Then start looking at the pumps they allow you to get. If not, look at your budget and watch a few videos to see which works for you :) good luck!
Thank you so much for this video. Lots of good information and how to use system. My S1 is on it's way. I went with the S1 mainly because I will be returning to work afterwards and the chargeable feature I'm sure will come in handy. I have noticed in my research and as you mentioned Medela seems to have a lot more compatible options for bottles and such because of its popularity.
You are absolutely correct! The chargeable feature is a must so you can pump anywhere. I hated being tied to a socket with my Medela at work. I pumped in some weird places because of that. You’ll love your Spectra :) good luck to you going back to work! The pump bag in the video is my favvvvvorite too! Works excellent with Spectra and looks like a purse. I highly recommend it.
Are there any cons to the spectra with the battery pack? Do you find yourself with an uncharged battery and wish you could just plug it in or does one of the Spectras offer both plug-in AND battery pack?
You never clarified the strength on the spectra, it sounds a lot weaker. My fear is I won’t be able to produce milk, or enough of it and I’d have to pump for hours to empty myself, which is something I cannot do. I’m really stuck on finding a good, solid, strong suction pump. (First time mom)
Spectra is a fantastic pump with some of the strongest suction you can find aside from a heavy duty hospital grade pump. You won’t be pumping for hours with this pump. It’s fantastic.
I wish I had seen this before I ordered my Medela from insurance. I’m disappointed with my pump and have heard great things about Spectra pumps since receiving my medela pump. Now I know lol.
I’ve used the Medela and the Spectra and I did prefer the Spectra, but I used the Medela for a year and it worked! Have you been able to make your Medela work for you?
New Little Life by Allison yes I have. It does work 🤗 and it is what i used with my other children, but I had to purchase that one and it was expensive. This one was provided to me by insurance. I just stuck with what I knew lol instead of just going for it ! That’s ok. Baby and I are happy 😊. Thank you!!
Hello not sure if you’d be able to reply. I love you video and my question is how is the suction with two pumps? I saw someone who had to buy two spectra’s because the suction wasn’t that strong at the same time.
Thanks so much for the side by side comparison! I purchased both the S2 and Medela PISA and have used the S2 so far but am debating whether to keep the Medela for when I return to work or if I should return it and exchange it for an S1 (or gift card towards other baby necessities) instead. I’ve used the Ameda Purely Yours in the past from my insurance with my first pregnancy, but decided to change this time around because I seemed to have stopped responding to that pump. I think my main concern now is how the Medela’s suction style feels in comparison to Spectra and I’m hesitant to open the Medela just to find out. Your video helped to give me a little bit of a glimpse in how the pump sounds - it seems significantly louder than the Spectra, would you agree? Also I’m not sure if you already heard of this, but I wanted to mention that you can get storage bags that screw directly in for the Spectra as well to avoid having to transfer milk after you’re finished pumping. I use the Kiinde storage bags/system and they provide adapters for almost any available pump that allow you to pump directly into their bags and they have a screw top instead of a ziplock type seal. You can find the bags online as well as in store at Target, Buy Buy Baby, etc. Just thought I’d mention this in case anyone is wanting the Spectra but was hesitant about whether there were direct pump storage bags like what Medela offers.
Very cool! Thank you! I’m going to have to look for some of those. I would say the Medela is a little louder than the Spectra, but only a little. If you plan on pumping often at home and at work, it may be worth it to have an extra pump at work. Hauling it back and forth is annoying, although very doable! If you won’t pump much at home, one would probably be just fine. I’ll be doing a review soon on the Freemie hands free breast pump! I’ll compare that one with the Spectra although they are completely different styles of pump. Might be worth checking out if you’re considering a second pump for work :) if you want to see it, I’ll work on getting that one up sooner than later! Let me know. Good luck!
No problem! Kiinde also has frequent offers for a free starter kit on their website where you just have to pay for shipping: kiinde.com/product/sample-kit-incl-bottle1-slow-nipple-kiinde/?SLNKOffer&Websitelandingpage&ID41 Also thanks for the quick reply and feedback! I will keep an eye out for your Freemie review. I actually have been using their cups with my Spectra instead of the Spectra flanges and I like the convenience so far.
New Little Life by Allison the Freemie cups are great! I’ve only pumped a handful of times so far and I currently have it set up for single pumping for when I’m feeling a bit engorged on one side and will pump on that side while nursing on the other. I love that it just sits in my bra or cami and doesn’t stick out like the regular flanges do so I don’t have to worry about the baby kicking it off while he’s nursing. It’s also easy to take apart to clean and reassemble. While it’s not completely discreet while you’re wearing them, it’s much less noticeable and obtrusive than using regular flanges so I’ll likely be using these when I need to pump at work at my desk.
That’s so wonderful! Congratulations. If I can help with anything, please feel free to reach out on Instagram or Facebook. I’ll help get you what works best for you!
I find my Spectra quite noisy. Also, the suction is not great, not like the Ardo Carum from the hospital. I find that the breasts don't empty completely...
You bet! Just make sure you plug up the second whole with the attached cap at the base of the machine. You need to close off the suction loop to keep the suction going on just the one side. You can see how to use just one side in this video here th-cam.com/video/gcNAbSsa9vo/w-d-xo.html If you have more questions, let me know! Thanks for watching!
@@NewLittleLife not at all! I got approved through Aeroflow for a Spectra S2, Medela Pump-N-Style, or Motif Luna (a couple others, but I'm not interested in them). I have a Medela from my last pregnancy/child, but I thought I was just going to go with Spectra S2 until my contact through Aeroflow mentioned the Luna being possibly even more efficient and quiet! You are my go-to on pumps, so I hoped you had some insight or could find out!! Baby is due Aug 4, so I'm trying to decide (pretty) quick and searching for reviews and such! 😊
What do you mean? You can pump both side (double pumping) on all spectra’s. If you mean a dual motor, that would be the spectra synergy gold or spectra dual compact.
Thank you SO much for this clear and concise comparison review. And I'm going to register for that bag right Now. I've been looking for a good one that fits everything. Thank you!
I have this Spectra S1, the features are so cool.but at the end of the day it doesn't get my milk out and make my breast clot. Not sure what to do. I have to go back to hand pumping.
My insurance only offers this madela pump or I can pay more and get the freestyle small portable one. Has anyone ever just ordered the free one and resold for help with buying a spectra?
The Medela is still a fine pump! You may check and see if your insurance will reimburse you for a pump you buy on your own? Maybe not the full cost but worth asking. Many women like the Medela! So if that’s your only option it’ll work. If you find out a way around let me know! I’d love to share with others. Good luck!
Ethiopian language 2011 sure! Here’s the link to the instructions on my blog. I don’t have a video on it, but all the information you need should be right here :) newlittlelifeblog.com/2018/11/11/order-a-breast-pump-through-insurance/ If you have any questions, please let me know!
You didn't have to tell us which pump was your favorite. It was pretty clear throughout your video which one you prefer. I appreciate the comparison. But I still do not feel like I have enough info to make an educated decision. I'm looking for a more non biased opinion.
I'm expecting my second child in the Spring and I am considering the Spectra over my Medela. Are the Spectra bags and accessories sold in stores like Medela or only online?
It is much easier to find Medela products in stores than Spectra. You can use any bags for freezing milk, it doesn’t need to be machine specific, but everything else for my Spectra I buy on Amazon. There are a few links in the description of this video for you to look at. You may also check with the company you purchase your pump from, a lot of times they’ll ship you extra supplies every couple months if you request it.
@@NewLittleLife Hi, in the description section under spectra, you have the link for medela cooler bag w/bottle listed. Does Spectra have a cooler bag/bottles? Thanks
No other video talked about small details or turned them on to hear the differences which I loved
I’m so glad you found it helpful. If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
So helpful!!!
I love a good simple straight to the point review! Great simple to understand video :)

Pregnant with my first child, thank you so much for direct helpful information!
I have twin newborns and I love the spectra, I get the same amount of milk (1200ml a day) as I did with the Madela without the pain.

So true!
Thanks for this video! My doctor recommended the Spectra, but also said Medela is good as well...so I was glad to find a comparison of the two. I think I'll go with the Spectra!
I have both and the spectra 1 is so much better.
The faster speed is the stimulation mode, to initiate letdown and the slower speed is for expression to allow for a full spray to be completed.
Yes, it is backwards in this video! The individual pump videos explain these correctly.. thanks for your comment.

You can double pump with spectra. Just to clarify.
Do any of these have an app to help track the settings you pumped at and maintain that log?
Neither of these pumps do.
Which pump did you get a better volume from, or were they both the same?
My personal experience, they were very similar. I liked the way the Spectra felt a little better, but output seemed the same.

What do you mean? You can pump both side (double pumping) on all spectra’s. If you mean a dual motor, that would be the spectra synergy gold or spectra dual compact.
How long should I stay on the pump?
Thank you SO much for this clear and concise comparison review. And I'm going to register for that bag right Now. I've been looking for a good one that fits everything.
Thank you!
Yay! I’m so glad it was helpful for you. You won’t regret buying that bag, it’s amazing!! 😍
Found this so helpful! Thank you :)
After watching this.... I need to swap out my pump
Great video thanks as a first time mom!
Great review, Thanks from Australia :)
Excellent video!!!
Great review and comparison!
I have this Spectra S1, the features are so cool.but at the end of the day it doesn't get my milk out and make my breast clot. Not sure what to do. I have to go back to hand pumping.
Maybe check your flanges sizes. Sometimes, that can make a big different in output and comfort!
Thank you, this was very helpful!!
I want to get the spectra pump but idk which one the s1 or s2
Both are great. The S1 has a rechargeable battery which is an awesome feature!
Good luck!
Hi, I was wondering does the spectra tubing fit the medela pump in style advanced?
No they are not compatible.
Reminds me of the motif Luna I got through insurance which didn’t work well for me
Really? I had the medela and it HURT
So helpful thank you!!!
What suction is the strongest spectra or Medela?
Spectra
Hi, my insurance can either cover Medela , zomee or amenda ? Can you please tell me what is the best?
I really enjoyed the Medela and the replacement parts and accessories are really easy to get. I don’t have much experience with the other two! (Yet😉)
I see a lot of ppl saying that their insurance covers...Who do you have insurance with ?
I had the medala for my first pregnancy and it broke in 4 months
can you send me a link to your video on how to get breast pump through insurance company please? I'm planning to get one this week.
Ethiopian language 2011 sure! Here’s the link to the instructions on my blog. I don’t have a video on it, but all the information you need should be right here :) newlittlelifeblog.com/2018/11/11/order-a-breast-pump-through-insurance/
If you have any questions, please let me know!
Thank you so much. I will work on it this week. I hope I will get the pump soon so I can get back to work.
Thank you!!! You help me a lot!!!
So glad 🤗
very informative !! thank you:)
This video is so helpful! Thank you!
Good I’m so glad! Don’t forget to check out the description for more information if you want!
Very helpful!!!! 🤗🤗
My insurance only covered the Medela I wanted the spectra
The Medela is also a good pump!!
You didn't have to tell us which pump was your favorite. It was pretty clear throughout your video which one you prefer. I appreciate the comparison. But I still do not feel like I have enough info to make an educated decision. I'm looking for a more non biased opinion.
Thank you for this review!
Great video thank you
Great review 💕
I'm expecting my second child in the Spring and I am considering the Spectra over my Medela. Are the Spectra bags and accessories sold in stores like Medela or only online?
It is much easier to find Medela products in stores than Spectra. You can use any bags for freezing milk, it doesn’t need to be machine specific, but everything else for my Spectra I buy on Amazon.
There are a few links in the description of this video for you to look at. You may also check with the company you purchase your pump from, a lot of times they’ll ship you extra supplies every couple months if you request it.
Buy buy Baby has started to carry spectra parts
Awesome! Thanks for the info :)

Hi, in the description section under spectra, you have the link for medela cooler bag w/bottle listed. Does Spectra have a cooler bag/bottles? Thanks
The Spectra doesn’t have anything like this that I know of. The Spectra bottle fit great in the Medela cooler though!
Is the Spectra S1 breast pump hospital strength like the S2 version?
I believe the suction strengths on the S1 and S2 are identical!
Pam?
It takes me 30 mins to pump 2 oz...😩
Oh dear, yes that’s a long time. How old is your little one?
Thank u!
I have a question.
what other parts do I need to purchase with the spectra? I mean parts that wear out soon.
There should be some links in the description for you! Duckbills are the main one. Back flow protectors occasionally too.
i love my spectra (not sponsered)
Like the video but, it’s clear you like the spectra. Looking for a pure non-bias review. 😏🙄
