The Old Grey Whistle Test was a famous British TV show that featured many iconic groups. If you were on the show and you were an English group it meant that you had made it - at least in your home country. What is cool is they also featured many American groups to expose them to a British audience. Another thing that was great about the show is the music was performed live as it is here by Hall and Oates. No canned backing tracks auto tune or back up dancers. Just live in one take.
The first Hall and Oates reaction?? I’m amazed 😮 “Would you say they have a plethora of hits”? Yes, they do! And all equally as rizzified as this one! 🎉😅
My fav Hall and Oates song along with Sarah Smile. Daryl Hall did an entire series called Live At Daryl's House. All recorded at his home studio on a farm in Vermont. There are two versions of this sing one with Rob Thomas and one with Anderson East on vocals. The sound quality of all the performances have superb sound quality. Hundreds of vids with so many great guest musicians/singers. Enjoy them when you can.

The Old Grey Whistle Test was a UK BBC long standing music program from the 70's, that generally featured band that were up and coming or outside the mainstream. It usually went out late at night on the lesser of the 2 BBC channels BBC2, so you had to be quite dedicated to watch it before the days of VCRs & TH-cam. The name "Old Grey Whistle Test" was a term take from Tin Pan Alley where song writers would listen out for passers by whistling the tune as the walked by the open windows hearing it played
Hall & Oats had loads of hit songs and theyre all great. Daryl Hall also has a show, Live From Daryls House were famous singers come and perform covers of Hall & Oats hits songs. The Celo Green version of "I cant go for that" is stunning. Its like the song was written for him.
Check out "Sara Smile" and "One on One." One of my favorite groups of the 70s and 80s. I saw them in concert in late 70s, they sound great live. The tall blonde-haired guy is Daryl Hall and the guy with the dark hair is John Oates. They met in college in Philadelphia.
There is a very cool series of videos called something like "Live at Darryl's House" where he invites in various artists and gets some of his excellent studio musicians and does their songs with them. Very fun!
Thier voices were so good they even covered the Righteous Brothers " You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and had another big hit! And Maddy, I've been to 60 concerts...Hall and Oates were in my top 5 all-time. They were so professional, energetic fun and studio perfect sounding. Fun reaction!
Like everybody at the time, I knew Hall & Oates from the radio, but I never knew how amazing they were were until I saw them live opening for ELO on their 1981 Time tour. Never bought an album, but next time they came to town on tour I damn sure bought a ticket.
They had a lot of great hits like 'you make my dreams come true'. Another band/artist with a lot of great hits is obviously the king.. I mean uhh queen.. whichever. Queen.
Maddy, Please go down the "Hall and Oates" rabbit hole. They are one of my favorite! Please please please listen to; Adult Education - Sara Smiles - I Can't Go For That - Method Of Modern Love - You Make My Dreams Come True - Kiss On My List - Maneater, just to name a few. There are probably another 25 top hits. (pssst - you are stunning also)
Yeah, there’s no way that anyone can possibly make it to 20 or 30 without hearing at least one of their songs. They have so many songs from every decade.
One of the greatest. Almost a throw-back to the Motown years. And what's so rewarding for me is watching you react to and appreciate my favorite songs and artists.
Rich Girl and Sara Smile were their other biggest early hits in the 70's. They had more hits in the 80's than the 70's, but in my opinion, their 80's hits were kind of formulaic and lacked the "blue eyed soul" of their earlier hits. Just my opinion.
this song and Sarah Smile are about his then-wife and her sister. one is how he felt after meeting the woman who would become his wife. the 2nd is about the death of his sis n law. now if you watch the behind the music, it might lead one to make certain leaps of logic. im not going to discuss them here, just say that a yr after his sister-in-law died, he and his wife divorced. just wanted to give some interesting facts about this song.
The biggest-selling duo in rock history. Massively successful and world-famous. Kind of a shame you’re a musician and never heard of them! Just dive in!
I had never thought this song to be about anything other than the death of the woman in his life. It's not said so specifically, but the emotion of it seems so much more traumatic than just a breakup.
First view of one of your videos, but if this is your initial Hall and Oates, are you ever in for a treat. Dive into Hall and Oates. Another group you would like, completely different from blue eyed soul, more jazzy, is Steeley Dan.
If you thought this was funny, you should see their music videos from the 80's. The blonde dude is Darryl Hall and the dark haired dude with the killer stache is John Oates.
These guys were amazing. Legit too. 100% respectful of the culture and traditions they became a part of. Unlike Bee Gee's disco which was straight-up appropriation of an emerging underground culture in a desperate bid to save a failing career and avoid falling into obscurity and irrelevance. Some of H&O's very early 80s work (You Make My Dreams Come True comes to mind) had this really weird new-wave kind of production that sold well but didn't really fit them as them. Those songs do translate incredibly well into more soulful takes they'd do in the future when they'd achieved enough success to not have to appease the industry and enough respect from the soul community to always be guaranteed an audience. They apparently hate each other now, though, which is sad because (like you observed) they are SO good together. For a while, Darryl was inviting moder artists out to his place in the country for little televised jam sessions. Cee Lo Green, Darry, and his band turned in fantastic renditions of "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" and "Crazy".
Hey, Maddy. Janis Ian has a song she played at the Old Grey Whistle. It is her biggest hit record called AT SEVENTEEN. Please give it a listen. Thank you.
One of the great R&B blue eyed soul songs of the 70s. Philly soul at its finest by a couple of kids from Temple University in Philly PA.
So sad that Daryl and John aren’t speaking today in 2024. They made so many great songs.
I heard that they're in the middle of a lawsuit, it's too bad. I hate to hear about these great groups having ugly endings.

Blue eyed soul at it's best here
Darryl Hall is one of the smoothest singers ever.
She laughs about the Carbon Monoxide. This Song was before Catalytic Converters lol.
Remember just like it was yesterday..from whole nother class of loss of love songs.

We had the best songs back in the 70s
Yes we did.
They always have great songs that make you feel good.😊😊
80% "serious", 20% humor great ratio for art.

Hall and Oats had a string of hits in the late 70’s early 80’s. Great reaction as always, Maddy! 💕💕🙏🙏
Sara smile live
Great song. "I'd pay the devil to replace her"...what guy hasn't thought of that after a painful breakup.
Girl,We were all cool back then. The 1970s were the coolest.
You know it ,
Lots of great stuff from the old grey whistle test
They remind me of the Flight of the Conchords duo with the way they sang this song
Yessss! 😂

Maddy should definitely look into the treasure trove of great acts/songs from Live from Daryl's House !
@@KennyRansom-l5k What these 2 said, check out live at Daryl's House amazing frigging show.
Old Grey Whistle Test was a United Kingdom program that has live bands.
Sara Smile is probably their most famous song and imo their best 🔥
One of the all time "Slow Jams".. Mandatory for every Love playlist
I feel like their 6 songs were equally great. Nobody turns off Hall & Oats.
I was so lucky to grow up during this period of music! Great job Maddy with your reaction!
Thank you!!
Classic duo of voices and talent that complement each other and separate themselves as icons.
The best-selling duo of all time! (YES! That's a fact)
So many hits.. wow.

They got a hit is an understatement! These guys were big for much of the 70s and into the 80s.😸Dont fear your hair!
I was fortunate to see these guys live when they opened for Genesis. That was about fifty years ago. I already had their first album.
Awesome!!
Blue eyed soul at its best. Darryl Hall Blonde and John Oates dark hair guitar.. Thank you great song with many more.

Who knew that John Oakes had such a powerful voice he was always in the background in later songs.
I don't know if they still hold the record but at one point they were the highest selling duo of all time. A lot of great music from them.
Music was in a transitional phase at the point of the 70's. I believe I was in 2nd or 3rd grade that summer.
We used to call them "Haulin' Oats" and laugh at their cheesy pop appeal, but we still really enjoyed their hits!
They had a lot of great hits like 'you make my dreams come true'.
Another band/artist with a lot of great hits is obviously the king.. I mean uhh queen.. whichever. Queen.

Yeah, there’s no way that anyone can possibly make it to 20 or 30 without hearing at least one of their songs. They have so many songs from every decade.
They have some very strong songs, like "Sara Smile"
Daryls House is worth a look , an array of stars joining him and a band in a home type studio , i actually think he matured into a far better artist
Im late to your reaction party but dang Im loving all your songs.
they were big in late 70s & early 80s
One of the greatest. Almost a throw-back to the Motown years. And what's so rewarding for me is watching you react to and appreciate my favorite songs and artists.
There isn't anything much smoother than the Philly Sound.
Hall is the one playing keyboards on the left

Sara smile is their opus.
I adore your reactions...thank you.
I played this album a LOT when it came out. This song especially.
this song and Sarah Smile are about his then-wife and her sister. one is how he felt after meeting the woman who would become his wife. the 2nd is about the death of his sis n law. now if you watch the behind the music, it might lead one to make certain leaps of logic. im not going to discuss them here, just say that a yr after his sister-in-law died, he and his wife divorced. just wanted to give some interesting facts about this song.
I’d totally dance with Maddy to this!🥰🤣
Hall and Oates..... National Treasure.
I think they missed a great opportunity as a breakfast cereal.great reaction
The biggest-selling duo in rock history. Massively successful and world-famous.
Kind of a shame you’re a musician and never heard of them!
Just dive in!
Wow!
Please do yourself a favor and listen to the studio version. There are mood making techniques that can't be replicated live.
I had never thought this song to be about anything other than the death of the woman in his life. It's not said so specifically, but the emotion of it seems so much more traumatic than just a breakup.
You should listen to Sara Smile. It is one of the best love songs ever made. It will melt you heart.
Abandoned Luncheonette is a great album. Personally I'd rate it their best.
Amazing and wonderful Classic song!!! Lovely reaction Maddy!! You are always so sweet and beautiful!! 😊🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
They got a hit? They were a hit making machine.
For some unknown reason, I can't seem to concentrate on the song/video. 😍😍😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍😍😍😍
"Sara Smile"
Geez. This takes me back. This was big when I was in high school, heh.
blonde is Daryl Hall, mustache is John Oates. So many hits to explore.
Oooh
@@MaddyReactions Listen to "Rich Girl" and "Sara Smile"
Hi Maddy…..great reaction to one of my favorite groups…. I have a recommendation for you…..Me and Mrs. Jones….live!
Blue eyed soul
you should really listen to "Live at Daryll's House"... many great artists join him there!
They had a lot of hits together in the 70's and 80's but now they hate each other. Oh well, you can still play the old records.
Great pick, they wrote quite a few awesome songs.
Do your fingers bend like that naturally or are you a gymnast or some such?
You can do worse than buying a Best of album from them. Unless you want to save it for reaction videos. 😉
Yes Hall and Oates . Finally ! I think more #1 than any other American band. Nice to see we are moving away a little from classic rock of the 70s .
She knows this song.... please 😮😮
Looking forward to this reaction from the beautiful queen ❤❤😊
awesome reaction...takes me back to the MTV days

💔 Heartbreak never sounded so good 🤔🤷..
Enjoy 😊✌️🕊️❤️
Thank you. Don't deny yourself "Sara smile" or you will hate us for not suggesting it more.

Perfect 👌
her half eaten chicken leg is still on the floor, but shes gone
That's why it's real❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊😢😢😂😂❤😢😢😢😮😅😊😊
good one....
Nothing more funny than carbon monoxide.
If you thought this was funny, you should see their music videos from the 80's. The blonde dude is Darryl Hall and the dark haired dude with the killer stache is John Oates.
It's not carbon-monoxide, Maddy... it's carbon AND monoxide.🤣🤣🤣
Great song... we're going to have to start a reaction video channel for Maddy reactions 🤘🫶
Liked them a lot! Darryl is great, His solo stuff is really good! Long ago😃
Oooohh!!
Do you have the original link? LOL Your beauty distracted me
Old Grey Whistle test, you can do all those videos, pick one Bob Marley

Hey, Maddy.
Janis Ian has a song she played at the Old Grey Whistle. It is her biggest hit record called AT SEVENTEEN.
Please give it a listen.
Thank you.
👍✌️💜love your sense of humor LOL
Impressed that you see the humor in their lyrics, most miss that entirely.
Wow that's pretty
It's sad that now Oates is suing Hall.
It's a shame they don't get along anymore.
