So excited to see your reaction at last! This is truly timeless music, recorded live. And when Daryl Hall finally cuts loose at the end, I get goosebumps. I agree that this may be a contender for best song. Though I think Hall’s best vocal is on the song One on One. Thank you both!
Us older folks love these guys! Y’all keep all these wonderful treasures alive! The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s brought out some of the BEST music on the planet! Pure talent!✌🏻😎
IMO, the 70’s has no equal in musical innovation-so many instruments, beats, fusion of genres, overlapping and crossing over, breaking rules, creating and experimenting with so many sounds. You said it- so many layers, talent & hard work. And many of these musicians are still working, over the years moving around with different bands and talents. At age 70, I am retired & have time to re-discover my old faves and appreciate the multi-dimensions so much more now-back then, it was just fun to listen & rock out to! Love that you can appreciate & enjoy them, too❤😊
this is what's known as Philly soul, Hall and Oates Philadelphia born and raised, my hometown boys, 30 miles east of me, these guys are one of my all-time favorites, you haven't even scratched the surface of Hall and Oates, they wrote some of the all-time greatest music, when people around here hear Hall and Oates the pride shows.
@davehess1019 Philly guy here. And you're right, we've got a lot of pride in our music. Oates went to my high-school, North Penn. Came back to play at our gym in '73 with his band 'Whole Oates' what a time.
When the sax solo drops out, and they come back into the song with: "Think I'll spend eternity in the city Let the carbon and monoxide choke my thoughts away..." One of the great moments in 70s music.
Definitely my favorite Hall & Oates song. So heartfelt -- just pulls you in. And it's one of the few songs that really features John Oates on vocals so clearly. He had such a deep soulful voice, I'm not sure why they stopped having him sing lead very much.
John sings the lower range soft vocals on the song. Daryl sings lead on this almost entirely. Not sure where you're coming from. Admittedly, John definitely sings more on this than other tracks, no doubt about it, but he's still more a support vocal on this.
@@bmac1205 They're pretty much singing together the entire time until the ending when they swap ad libs. John gets some of the lines into the chorus solo, like, "But it's plain to see"... and "Now it's up to me..." It's way more than he usually gets, except for You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', that he gets to sing solo.
John is a great singer. He sang two or three songs per album. He sang some of their finest like "Melody For A Memory", "Crazy Eyes", "Alone Too Long", "Had I Known You Better Then" and so on. Daryl got the attention, but John was/is great.
In certain instances, sometimes analog sounds are better than digital, when you lay tracks down one at a time in sequence, low first on up to high at the end.....Hard work and long hours.
“Get up in the morning, look in the mirror, one less toothbrush hanging in the stand, yeah my face ain’t looking any younger”. Perfect lyrics that many of us identify with. You might like Jackson Browne’s In the Shape of a Heart.
Cmon, give me a break: so let me get this straight - so Emerson Lake and Palmer are fakes? ELO are over-produced? Talent takes advantage if whats available to them. You don’t think your parents thought the same thing of electric guitars? There was a ton of mediocre acts then too. There is generational talent in every era.
One of my favorite songs of the 70s. And thank you so much for doing the studio version. So many reactors do a live version (which is great) but, exactly as you pointed out, the star of this show is the production and arrangement.
This is so darn good. One of my favorites by Hall and Oates - those vocals along with that sax!🎶Also love Sara Smile. Great request JK and great reaction Nick & Lex♥
Hi Guys, Loved Hall & Oats for decades. Amazing albums. I even have "The Essential H&O" with 37 tracks on 2 discs and not one track needs to be skipped. Also these guys need to be seen live. Early or later live performances, it's all good. Watch one and you will want to watch another. They do an incredible cover version of "Unchained Melody" live. It's so hard to pick favourite tracks as there are sooo many. Personally, one I do play more than most is "Some things are better left unsaid". When it goes into the powerful mid section with the words "You're living a lie, you're only going to hurt yourself " It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. ... Even in the fade out ..that final 2 seconds ...very low volume but still effective ...that raw painful yell !!! ... I re-recorded it via a Videopad Editor using a graphic equalizer and brought up the fade out louder, then saved onto lossless mp3....so it had to be that good for me to go to that trouble ...I didn't touch the rest of the song only the fade out louder. This track "She's Gone" of course is among their greatest hits. Superior production as always with these guys.....and you've done it again ...Putting on some Hall & Oats albums after this. Lol Thankyou for playing. Byee Jim X [ Live, they knock it out of the park !!! ]
One of my favorite songs when I was a kid. Always was one of the best songs on the radio. I love today's technology, but to have been a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's with all the great music and waiting for new albums to come out was wonderful. We couldn't get to the record store fast enough!!! ❤
Nick had a serious stank face going on early in the tune! IMO, Hall and Oates' best work. Hard to believe it's over fifty years ago now - still holds up remarkably well today. Production out of this world.
Top notch JK! Always requesting quality music! The production was great! Their songwriting and their craft is impressive! Thanks Nick and Alexia! Spot on analysis !!
A lot of commenters are understandably thinking Todd Rundgren produced this, which makes a whole lot of sense because he and Hall & Oates are from the same Philly soul stock, but this was actually produced by none other than the legendary Arif Mardin. Yes, identical opening changes to 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" but predated that by two years. Thanks again, JK, for yet another stellar selection...
Great album and great track. This album sentimental value as the 'luncheonette' was about 10 miles away from the home where I grew up. Thanks to @JK and for your reaction of this great track.
Brings back memories. I took a bus across Canada in december -83. Had a couple of tapes and a walkman. Billy Joel "an innocent man" and Hall and Oates "best of". This music never leaves me, it`s so great.
Hey guys, the diner is located in the Reading, PA area which is about 30 miles north west of Philadelphia. Daryl Hall is from Pottstown, PA which is near Reading. Still listening to this song today. Check out Fall in Philadelphia on that LP. Great blues sound
This is one of my favorite bands! I really enjoy their earlier stuff so very much! This tune and "Sara Smile" are a must from this great duo. I'd suggest "Have I Been Away Too Long" or "Melody For A Memory" from Along The Red Ledge released in 1978. Unfortunately no channels react to those two masterpieces. And most of their fans have never heard these songs. Given your review on this one, I GUARANTEE you two will LOVE this album. Thank you for your channel and your love and appreciation of great music! Btw, Steely Dan is another favorite band of mine! Please react to one if not both songs that I've mentioned. Thank you!
JK- thanks for the pick! Abandoned Luncheonette was a good album and this song was a minor hit in 1973 but when it was re released then it took off in 1976 after Sara Smile was a hit... I was in college as a dj at WHFC and I used to play the song and When the Morning Comes on my shift in 1975 before She's Gone went big...
The Luncheonette was in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. The guys were from nearby Pottstown. The luncheonette has since been moved, but I rummaged through it in the 80's. This is the epitome of blue eyed soul. My favorite Hall and Oates album. This is also when John Oates still sung lead on some songs. You should have had the next song play!!!!! "I'm Just a Kid (Don't Make Me Feel Like a Man)"

JK! Always great to hear Hall & Oates. I was rather surprised when NicknLex played Abandoned Luncheonette before, although with your great taste I wouldn't have put it past you to request that song! The guys were suitably impressed.

Great song! You really get to hear John Oate’s voice in this one. Their first hit was a song called “Do What You Want, Be What You Are “. You should check that one out.
You’ve got to listen to the last track on this LP. ‘Every Time I Look at You’ starts out with some funk, great guitar licks, then seamlessly moves into a bit of bluegrass during the phenomenal outro.
No, the luncheonette building (dining car) is not there any more. It was removed a while ago. At least 30 years ago if not longer. There's a local park there now. The Diner was along the west side of the Schuylkill River and the east side of PA Route 724 (Chester County) within the Pottstown, PA zip code area (Montgomery County), but not actually in Pottstown. My Mother lived the last 3 years of her life from 2012 to 2015 at a nursing home (Manatawny Manor) down the street in a census designated area called Kenilworth in Chester County. The veterinarian that my dad would take our hunting beagles to when I was a child in the '60's is still down the street on the other side of the road. You can see it with Google Maps roadside view. A Luncheonette is a smaller size Dining Car that only served Breakfast and Lunch and usually closes around 2:00 PM. Dining Car Diners are a thing in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic east areas of the USA. The album features black and white pictures of Hall & Oates at a table booth inside the diner when it was abandoned. The pictures were taken by Hall's then girlfriend.
Anything from Daryl's House is absolutely incredible! One of my all time favorite song from them is " Me and Mrs Jones"!! There is a live video that just gives you chills...please take a listen.
Even this song took a long time to become a hit. It went nowhere on its original release, then was re-released when H&O became popular with another song.
That song is 50 years old! We had some unbelievable quality and diversity back then, real music -- great that we can still bask it. Telling thing about the years since: as the tech became more sophisticated, the content became more juvenile and inane. For decades now, pop music has been strictly for little kids.
👍👍 classic song and artist right there. Sara Smile is probably their best song imo. But I think my favorite is the live version of Everytime You Go Away from their live at the Apollo album. Y'all got to check out the Live at Darryl's House show. Awesome. As for why the music was so great back then, I blame it on the drugs too🤣
check out more hall and oates like sara smile, one on one, can't go for that, say it isn't so, out of touch, maneater, kiss is on my list, private eyes, adult edcucation, everytime you go away.

"She's Gone" is my favorite Hall and Oates song. It's really beautiful and was huge in the 70's. We were so spoiled.
I love when young people discover the magic that happened in the 1970's.
This and Sara Smile are the iconic 70's hits from H&O
I agree that Sara Smile is an iconic song. I think it is their best.
Mandatory for any "sexy adult time" playlist!
Being a teenager in the 70's was amazing! The best music that was ever produced!
Us older folks love these guys! Y’all keep all these wonderful treasures alive! The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s brought out some of the BEST music on the planet! Pure talent!✌🏻😎
Thank you for supporting - so glad you enjoyed with us!! :)
You can basically say that about every decade... they all have "some" to contribute
Absolutely beautiful song, along with Sara Smile their two best by a long shot in my opinion. The emotion in their voices is wonderful.
There isn't a whole lot to say when it's a hundred times better than anything on the radio right now
Omg your 1000 right 🥰
People still listen to the radio?
Don’t. Its classic in its own right. Don’t compare eras. That era had Anne Murray, England Dan, Nicolette Larsen and a hubgred other ho hum acts too
@@bjwnashe5589yes, I personally listen to classic Rock stations.

This my all time favorite Hall & Oates song. And I love the fantastic, groovy drumming of the legendary Bernard Purdie on this
BTW Purdie played drum on some Steely Dan albums (Aja, Royal Scam, some songs on Gaucho…)
“Get up in the morning, look in the mirror, one less toothbrush hanging in the stand, yeah my face ain’t looking any younger”. Perfect lyrics that many of us identify with. You might like Jackson Browne’s In the Shape of a Heart.
