    The priest is one of the most under appreciated actors in the movie. He just sits quietly making faces as Salieri talks, but his expressions are important to the flow of emotions as the story unfolds.

      I agree. By the end, he is weeping and, I believe, has lost his faith. And he wasn't even a character in the original Play; he was invented out of whole cloth for the film!

    My favorite scenes are when it cuts back to Salieri's retelling with the priest. He is such a fan of Mozart he can't help himself. His vocabulary and command of language is so perfect it somehow takes me to the point of laughing with tears in my eyes. He is such a mess but shines brighter describing Mozart than any other time in the film. It is like he was waiting his whole life to finally cry out to God, from his heart, for once.

      Exactly...it's like he desperately wants to hate Mozart because he's such a petulant child, but Salieri's true passion is music, and he can't dent how incredible Mozart is with it. He's at once unbelievably jealous and in awe. Incredible acting on both parts, but especially Salieri's...particularly the subtle expressions of emotion as he reads through his music and tells the priest about it.

    • @abehambino
      @abehambino 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Agreed, and it actually does work in a historical context better than its critics admit. That Salieri at least once claimed that he killed Mozart is as far as I can find accepted. I see this movie as a dramatization of his delusions on the subject.

      Well, it really is filled with so many inaccuracies in order to entertain. Nearly all great composers of previous ages had fascinating lives, filled with enough intrigue, humor and passion without the need for total fabrication. Like Immortal Beloved or Impromptu.
      Hollywood manages to trivialize, sexualize and dumb down most histories. I loved Amadeus as a young man, but thankfully I understand the differences between total entertainment and history. Many walked away from the play and the film mis-informed. Entertained, but sadly mis-informed on Mozart, Salieri, Vienna and the entire true and fascinating stories of these people and this era.

    The most beautiful scene in this film is when Constanzia brings Mozart's sheet music to Salieri, who then sight reads it in his mind. In shock, he drops the music to the floor and leaves for another room and throws a crucifix into the fireplace declaring, "Now we are enemies!" My heart stood still when I first saw this.The whole movie then made sense.

      I know you wrote this comment several years ago, but I wanted to say that I love his pink wig too! I don't know how historically accurate in fashion that wig would be. Most of us know Hollywood takes artistic liberties. I think that the wig is a nod to the modern hair styles that were popular at the time (1980's). It reminds me of the new wave band members hair. A flock of seagulls comes to mind. Mozart was young and very forward thinking. I think he would approve of a pink wig and probably enjoy modern times if he were to time travel. Sorry to ramble on. Have a nice day! 😊

    I think this is what perfection means, the singing, the dancing, the music performing, the acting, the directing, the editing and everything just no more nor less. Tom's performing makes me wonder, 200 years ago at this very moment, if Mozart was as this proud as he expressed, maybe Tom's face expressing was even more accurate of showing Mozart's very own feelings.

    Great footage. I love the male dancers as they come strutting out like a bunch of proud peacocks. Is a difficult dance maneouvre. They don't quite synchronize properly, but they're giving it all they've got. It's executed with lots of pomp, and feeling too. It's masculine and athletic like a real sailor man should be depicted as. I Love It. I Get It.

    About the "fireworks" Salieri describes. What Mozart is doing here, and which he does so well, is that after the working out of the main theme he lets the audience rest their ears with simple scales and arpeggios. A sound strategy and one audiences appreciate. Don't make them work too hard for too long.
