      I think this is why they split up the best actor award into leading actor and supporting actor. Had they had those categories, I'm pretty sure Murray and Tom would have won that night.

    I love how Murray and Tom Hulce's relationship with each other is the polar opposite of the envy that Murray's character embodied in this masterpiece of a movie. Tom's childlike explosion of excitement to Murray winning and Murray's words of only thing missing is Tom Hulce by his side receiving the award.. Just wow.

    • @kxmode
      @kxmode 9 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      FMA's performance was deep and emotional. He lived, ate and breathed Salieri. He felt his thoughts and his loathings. He felt his absolute envy of Mozart's abilities while at the same admiring this man who clearly had God given talent in the work he produced. All of that, all those emotions, all mixed together and projected without whispering a single word. That is one of the most difficult performances to pull off authentically.

      I agree. The dialogue between Salieri and the priest is awsome, very emotional. Like when the priest start to sing along and say.
      - Yes i know that! Thats charmning! I'm sorry i didnt know you wrote that!
      - ...I didn't.
      I also like when Salieri try to describe Mozarts music
      - On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse - bassoons and basset horns - like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly - high above it - an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I'd never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing a voice of God.

    • @gspaulsson
      @gspaulsson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mozart was a less complex character (in the movie) and had the real Mozart's music buoying him up. BTW, the movie led to a revival of interest in Salieri, who IRL was friends with both Mozart and Beethoven, I think Beethoven's teacher at one point, and a pallbearer at his funeral. They were all part of the elite of their time and respected each other. Salieri was conservative, and his music went out of fashion as the new generation of romantics arrived.

    To people who say Tom Hulce should've been nominated as Supporting Actor, I don't agree and here is why: the movie subtly and brilliantly shifts both your focus and sympathy, from Salieri onto Mozart. At the start of the movie, we hate Mozart 'cause we see him through Salieri's point of view. In the middle of the movie, however, Mozart has subtly transformed into the central character, and we sympathize with him as Salieri becomes the story's villain. This was my experience, at least. So they were both Lead Actor, and the Academy recognized that, even though it was sad that it meant that they couldn't both win the Oscar since both actors were indeed phenomenal in Amadeus.
