I remember seeing David Helfgott live, and this was his last performance of the night. It was a once in a lifetime event, I can tell you. I also learned one of his piano teachers was a student of Liszt, which should tell you why he's such an amazing pianist.
Need to buy this film, I love the story for all its tragic humor, but it's rare that a movie about a pianist has somebody who can fake the hand motions well enough to fit what they're supposed to be playing. Rush is superb.
+lygophile If you look closely, you can actually see that he is kinda faking it or maybe failing a bit sometimes. It's originally played by the real David Helfgott and added on to the footage. But i read in the trivia of the film at IMDB that Geoffrey Rush actually had to learn this piece to play this role in the movie, so he is kinda playing it the right way still
21 years ago, when this first came out; it was my first exposure to the Rack 3...I had heard some things by Rachmaninoff and I knew what an amazing pianist he was but...This movie gave me a thirst for more Rachmaninoff...The Rack 3 haunts me; It's power is sublime!
Me too. Favorite concerto from anyone. Absolutely gorgeous. I was shocked I had missed that piece, having been classically trained as a kid and a fan of everyone from Wolfgang to Stravinsky.
I still remember seeing this for the first time. I got chills when he goes right into playing after being heckled. And then looks back at 1:13 like 'I don't hear you laughing now b****' lol
Geoffrey Ruh really can and did play Rimsky-Korsikoff's "Flight of the Bumblebee", from memory, at that speed. What an intellectual achievement that was !
If I remember correctly according to the director's comments, the music you here isn't Rush playing BUT he did learn the fingering to a "T" so he could appear as if he was playing without splicing someone else's hands in. That, in itself, is amazing!
I think Geoffrey is pretty good on piano and his fingers are definitely in the right place.I can play this piece but not up to speed. In the opening downward run, however, the first note of every 16 should be with the left hand not the right hand. Geoffrey does the lot with the right hand which I thought was interesting! Pretty impressive hand synch though!
Yes. Geoffrey Rush is a brilliants and lovable actor ... but he is portraying an even more brilliant and lovable person, David Helfgott. Please don't forget. I met Helfgott shortly a couple of times after concerts in Denmark and when I told him my name is Leif he hugged me long and dearly and kept repeating "Leif Den Lykkelige" which was the nordic explorer that came to America 500 years before Columbus. Helfgott lived in Denmark for some time in my home town though I regrettable never met him at that time. When he played his birthday concert in Copenhagen after the regular set he kept running off stage asking his wife if he could play another piece. She rushed him in again and he ran back on stage and asked the audience if he could play another piece. The love from the audiience was never ending. He ended up playing double time, a night never to forget. I still cry when I reminisce.
can never watch this film and NOT cry at the end. The beauty of this scene, the snarky " ugly shirt guy" who mocks. And then when Helfgott plays, (Rush) you just KNOW Mr. Shirt is thinking: "Am 'I' a Jerk, or WHAT???"

This is my favorite movie of all, Rush played Helfgott to the tee
One of the best cinematic scenes and one of the best films ever !! Genius
0:50 BAM. one of my fav movies ever. I watch this scene once a week. Love it!
I didn't know how good Geoffrey Rush's portrayal of David Helfgott was until I saw a documentary on the real one - it is stunning.
What was the documentary?
Geoffrey Rush was so lucky to get such a great role, and he did a great job of it. David was a true genius, no matter what his father thought.
About some 65 years ago, a high school classmate, Albert Laidlaw, played this at M.D.H.S. It was amazing to hear then and still is today.
That’s the best scene of the entire movie.
Great how bar owner shuts up quick.
Geoffrey, one of greatest artists/actors on planet earth 🌎 ...shine on brother 👬💪
What a great movie that was. One of the best.
Remember the guy who you called lame in middle school
haha precisely.
I remember that guy. I put him in a wheel chair for molesting my younger cuz. Is that you?
Now they just shoot people. Should give them free piano lessons
I remember seeing David Helfgott live, and this was his last performance of the night. It was a once in a lifetime event, I can tell you. I also learned one of his piano teachers was a student of Liszt, which should tell you why he's such an amazing pianist.
One of the best FU scenes of all time!
I watched this movie when I was 11 years old on theater. Remember everything. Awesome movie. This scene was amazing to me, I was just shocked.
But i read in the trivia of the film at IMDB that Geoffrey Rush actually had to learn this piece to play this role in the movie, so he is kinda playing it the right way still
+lygophile Not true, at all. He's miming it.
@lygophile Geoffrey Rush finger synchs the piano part.
David Helfgott recorded the soundtrack music.
Here we go, this is spectacular to watch. He is so awesome in this movie
Out of curiosity rob. Do you like ( the yellow shark) by mr Zappa??
It's Rimsky-Korsakov, not Rachmaninoff.
@@cfwintner1 he’s talking about the key song in the movie not this video clip
@@cfwintner1 Yes, but the Rack 3 is where he goes nutso...Do try to keep up dear boy!
Fab Geoffrey Rush on an antique upright grand piano. Wonderful job. Rush is top drawer. Cheers.
favourite scene in the movie. had the honour of seeing him play this live, it was life-changing.
You're blessed...:)
Geoffrey Rush deserved the Oscar for this interpretation.
Makes me happy that he's able to play again and make everyone happy while also being happy himself.
"The 'Flight of the Bumblebee' is the single greatest piece of music ever written that captures the true majesty of nature's perfect chaos."
Who says that?
I still remember seeing this for the first time. I got chills when he goes right into playing after being heckled. And then looks back at 1:13 like 'I don't hear you laughing now b****' lol
The Crossing Guard, Leaving Las Vegas, Shine, … '96 was such a great year in cinema.
Geoffrey Ruh really can and did play Rimsky-Korsikoff's "Flight of the Bumblebee", from memory, at that speed. What an intellectual achievement that was !
That’s incredible!
Happened to be thinking of this movie just the other day, and here this scene pops up on my page!
If I remember correctly according to the director's comments, the music you here isn't Rush playing BUT he did learn the fingering to a "T" so he could appear as if he was playing without splicing someone else's hands in. That, in itself, is amazing!
David Helfgott recorded for soundtrack,,,Geoffrey Rush finger synched for the cameras and acted/voiced David perfectly.
@@josephhapp9 The playing looked fine, but his looking back at people seemed a bit odd to me.
I saw this movie with one of the best human beings I have ever met. Miss you.
i watched this more than 10 times!
me too
Shannon Ong me three.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Great scene from a fabulous movie.
One of my favourite films of all time. What a mesmerising scene!
OH GOD ! I like that man ! He was awesome when he played that composition !
I saw David helfgott perform at Mundaring weir in perth, did the fastest version of this i've ever heard! Absolutely mesmerising!
This movie is a masterpiece!
Awesome film, I think I have seen it 4 times already. ❤
The most music I've ever heard stuffed into 69 seconds.
can never watch this film and NOT cry at the end. The beauty of this scene, the snarky " ugly shirt guy" who mocks. And then when Helfgott plays, (Rush) you just KNOW Mr. Shirt is thinking: "Am 'I' a Jerk, or WHAT???"
I fecking love this scene !!!!
😠😑😔... È difficile guardare questo film senza commuoversi... 😢😢
And not a single smartphone to record with
Mike Castillo sarcasm
Mike Castillo You're an idiot
RIKKI R Eh well, still won an Oscar for it.
Johnathan Grey how dumb can you be.....
Thank god they had the movie camera rolling.
It still brings tears to my eyes
