    got mine at a show for 7 bucks, looked like it was damaged by a damp area or water damaged, motor didnt spin, and the chassis has rough spots where the die-cast started corroding. did a full rebuild of everything including the motor, and filled in the bad spots in the chassis and lower shell, thing runs like new, no new parted needed! these things are hard to kill. had mine painted in black chassis and footplate, with a green cab and engine hood, these engines clean up really well and can still look great mixed in with your newer built 50's-80's fleet

    SMT, I've done a little research and what I think that's an old Penn Line switcher. I was looking back thru my old editions of Model Railroader (1950-53) and I saw many advertisements for this little guy.
    Hope this helps!

    You should invest in a lab bench variable DC power supply so you can hook up trains and not have to goto the tracks each time and risk messing up a controller. They are not that expensive online if you shop around. Also some plug in probes and clips for it as well as a multimeter.
    Also a magnet or magnetic bowl to put screws in so they are not running all over your repair bench. I work on 2-way radios and IDK how many times a magnetic bowl has saved me from loosing tiny screws to the unforgiving worm hole producing floor..
    Also an idea. mount a section of track on your bench wired to the variable PSU so you can do wheel gauging and conductivity tests before reassembling the trains and putting them on your layout.

    That is a Pennline Whitecomb D-1 midget switcher. It is cast in lead I believe and they were kits made around the 40's and 50's. Nice find, I want one myself.

    This is a Penn Line engine from the late '50's or early '60's. The earliest version of the loco used pullys and spring belt drive instead of gears. They did not come with working headlights. (Yours was drilled out to accept bulbs.) The 1 to 1 gear ratio made it a very fast runner. Far faster than a switcher could ever go. I have one of these Midgets that the previous owner converted back to belt drive to reduce its speed.

    I got a question.....I'm looking for a 1970's n scale atlas side mount that screws under the fuel cell to mount the motor in to the chassis? I have one that started smoking....lol wont run now............thank you in advance.....

    Heh, I have one of these myself, the motor has a bad commutator so I need to someday replace the Pitman engine with a new one along with carving out the epoxy keeping the front coupler pocket sealed with a broken coupler in it. I will note you are actually missing the hand rails that go on the front and back (I don't think I've ever seen one of these things that was aquired secondhand and WASN'T missing the hand rails), but if you look up pictures for this Penn Line in its original form, along with noting the holes in the front and back foot platforms drilled into the frame, you should be able to scratchbuild replacement handrails no problem with the right size wire.

    • @davidztog9011
      @davidztog9011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paper clips and a pair of needle nose pliers work as well to make front and rear handrails. 👍

    • @benh3518
      @benh3518 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidztog9011 That is absolutely amazing. I actually have a second Penn Line switcher of this type (to pair with the first as a set of industrial switchers for a future layout industry) and it too is missing the hand rails.Though there the ebay listing identified it as an 'unknown mfg 0-4-0 steam engine'.

    SMT - That switcher looks like one featured in a book titled " Model Railroading " by Harry Zarchy from 1955. The kit locomotive in the book had a similar mechanism with the 2 big gears. I remember the author painted it black, because many railroads did so at the time. If you find those big, green diodes obtrusive, you could always salvage some smaller, black diodes from a power pack to use for the directional lighting function.

    Hey. I have a question on kadee couplers in Canada. Do they come on models out of the box or do you have to put them on? In Aussie most companies have links with kadee so we don’t have to add them. Cheers

      I considered replacing the wires but then I realized that I would ether need to connect new wires to the lights or replace the lights which would be very complicated so I'm just going to wait and see how the wires last.

    Very Cool Vintage Switcher. It is a Penn Line Whitcomb 0-4-0 midget diesel switcher. The company got its start in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. They were basically blank slates for the hobbyist to paint to suit. You figured out another one Harrison! Strong runner. Hope you make it to 5K subscribers by Christmas!
