    Very Many Thanks for posting this. I was in Falmouth at the time but due to the terrible public transport arrangements, I was unable to get into town as I cannot walk very far. Most disappointed. Thanks again.

    Excellent Video and it was good to see such a good turn out from both Military And Civilian Contingents. Compared to this, some events, were very low key or not well supported.

    I like the parade and the sentiments behind it. I have a wider concern about British marching bands in general. Why can they not memorize the music they are marching to? Other marching bands around the world can do this - why not British bands? I'm sure they are as intelligent as any other nationality and they produce many wonderful marches. Why can't they memorize them? Every band in this parade had some members marching with music. It hinders the overall appearance of the band. In America , in high school and college bands - bands that march with music are derided. What's wrong with them - are they a beginners band? One rarely ever sees it here. If American and the superb Japanese bands can memorize their music, I'm sure British marching bands can do so too. I say all this in love - I am an a British history major and ardent Anglophile. Just please - memorize and march.

      as an ex national service army bandsman , memorising marches wasn’t even considered with the amount of other duties we were involved with , well out of order suggesting it sir . Taffy morgan

      @vickyRoyalHistory Hi Vicky! I thought my diatribe on marching might elicit a spirited response. Thanks for your thoughtful reply. My answer:
      I know all military bands round the world have other duties to perform. If you look closely I did not suggest that British bands memorize all military music from the last 400 years. What I suggested was that marches could be memorized for parades and field events where marching is involved. Of course they should use music for concert events, receptions and so forth. My guess is they are seated for such events, or even forced to stand, they should use music. I am talking only about parades and marching field event, just like all the other great marching bands of the world. Apples for Apples. Memorizing one march for a parade will no decimate a talented band. Unless, you are marching a circular parade route, the people will only see and hear the band once. If at the end of the parade you have a concert, pull out your music and holders from fanny packs and have at it.
      American high school bands and especially college and university bands must often learn and rehearse new shows and music every week or so. They are often complex procedures and new music must be memorized in very short intervals. Yes, they march w/o music. All this while carrying a full college load
      On the other side of the coin: I saw a band named the Marching Koalas from New South Wales, Australia in the 2018 Rose Bowl Parade. These kids live in such remote locations that they can come together to practice only day a week. Yet they had all their marches and field show music memorized. An amazing band .
      My guess is that British could easily adjust to this. They are talented and memorizing one or two marches will be easy for them. Hey, if American and Japanese kids can do it, so can they. Apples to Apples. They already march well( by the way - every band in the Falmouth parade was marching at the military standard speed of 120. No one was close to 240) They sound good. But they would look so much better if their noses were not buried in music holders. Just a suggestion, but my guess it will be met with the standard 7 word reply echoing down the ages: "We never did it that way before."
      Now, I am not recommending that that British bands try to emulate the great Japanese marching bands of today. They are in another world. If you a have not seen them, on TH-cam look up Kyoto Tachibana, Waseda Setsuryu or Takigawa . I think you will be impressed. It's been a pleasure to communicate with you about marching bands - as you might guess I was in marching band years ago and in retirement it is a hobby. God bless and keep you. Lance

      @@donmorgan9139 Hey, Taffy! My sister's name was Taffy. I'm afraid I disagree with you - it is not out of order to ask a good band to memorize a march for a parade.. They will sound better, march better and look far more impressive. Your Welch friend, Lance Jones

    • @lancejones8073
      @lancejones8073 ปีที่แล้ว

      @vickyRoyalHistory Hi Vicky! Thanks for your further input. You have almost convinced me British Military bands are so overworked that they must fall into their barracks every night so fatigued, so drained, so stupefied that they could d not possibly have the energy to memorize one or two marches - even ones they have played before. Almost, but not quite. Watching many different British units, I have seen the ceremonies you mentioned . I am impressed with the precision and sound of British pomp and circumstance - nobody does it better. Given the ability of the average British bandsman, I'm sure they are talented enough to accomplish memorizing and marching. I love things British and Britain. Please be careful about implying ignorance and stupidity to someone foreign who loves and supports your institutions. I am merely suggesting a possible improvement - not the destruction of British bands.
      I am not sure how aware you are of American Colleges and universities, but it is more than papers and Friday tests. To maintain grade points, classes and labs must be attended, and no , tests are not all on Friday. To remain in a university band, a certain grade point is required. Please don't get the idea that college students laze about most of the week. I know British band members do not.
      It may surprise you to know I am also critical of some U S military bands- some of whom march with music - some do not. I find this particularly egregious in America where 99% of kids in high school bands do not march with music. Like your band members, they also function as corpsmen.
      Lastly, I encourage you to look at the Japanese bands I mentioned before . They are fantastic, non -military and extremely entertaining. That would be a real comparison of apples to oranges. Very few high school bands in America march the military 6 to 5 (6 steps to 5 yards) except for a few high school bands in east Texas. If you wish to see a very impressive military style marching band, I recommend Texas A & M University's band. I think you will enjoy it .
      Hey, I've enjoyed our conversations. . May life treat you well.
      Your friend, Lance Welch Jones (full proper name)

      @@lancejones8073 maybe its because they want perfection , how many professional ochestras do you see playing without music to folow ? im pretty sure that all the bands could play their music from memory so there must be a good reason for it. . you want to compare an american high school band (although im sure they are very good) with the likes of the Royal Marines Band , It really diminishes your point
