This is just about the best instructional video channel on TH-cam. He does everything right: No annoying background music! He clearly describes what he is doing in a post filming voice-over NOT while he is painting...recognizing, rightly, how difficult it is to do both at the same time ! He speaks slowly and distinctly. He shows us his reference photo as he does the work. Bravo!
I’ve just picked up the paintbrush I dropped forty years ago... I’ve embarked on a journey of discovery and practice. I copy a masterwork, twice, then a third time with me in the picture! Just doing my first one, and have learnt so much. Definitely the way to go for me. Thanks for all your videos.
I've painted a lot of master copies, but felt so inspired and informed watching yours. I cannot wait to add this into my quarantine routine! Thank you for making this video.
I love when you makes us see how different lines and shapes line up with eachother, and makes us notice techniques he uses like carving out the silhouette with the background color.
It is impossible for the lower middle class in some Asian countries to buy such a good lesson with the equivalent of foreign money. So many many thanks Master for helping with these free lessons.
Excellent! Thank you so much for your effort and inspiration and generosity...pretty good study and analysis...Sargent was tremendous! And those few who were fortunate enough to study with him indeed got the instruction of their lives! I took 2 workshops with Michael Shane Neal whose teacher was Everett Raymond Kinstler who was lucky enough to study with one of Sargent's students. All the best and stay healthy!
Congratulations! You're very lucky to have studied with Michael Shane Neal, he's a fantastic painter (and a very stylish dresser). And I've always loved Everett Raymond Kinstler, I've got one of his books. I particularly love his painting of William Montgomery Flagg.
@@SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting Yes Alex, Shane dresses with STYLE...he also paints very well as did Kinstler ( I have some of his books as well)..thank you for posting this image of Sargent's...I did the copy yesterday and today...it was time well spent...Sargent's painting is so subtle in the look of the sitter...I just tried to get drawing and shapes/color-values to work...I posted it on Instagram and mentioned you..my Instagram ID is markkatzman8894...thanks again for your effort and your painting.

Yes he does. Partly that would have been because he was using lead white rather titanium. Lead is much thicker. Also he mixed a lot of paint. I tried to mix a lot more paint for this demo, but it appears I still didn't mix as much as Sargent.
A Massive thank you for your inspiration and for this excellent video. If only more art schools were able to give this standard of teaching. Thank you.
Thank you. Yes, that is unfortunately still the case with art schools in the mainstream university system. But in recent years, thanks to being able to find good teachers on the internet, more and more people have been learning to paint from life properly. I decided to take a leave of absence from my Art degree, final year for my mental health, just before the lockdown happened. After 3 years of painting and only painting, I really thought I needed a break - i've spent the past 3 months just finding comfort in everything else other than art. But now, I literally can't satiate it in any other way. Strangely I've never followed YT tutorials before, and still I know that I have a lot to learn from basic flesh tone palettes etc. Honestly your videos are really helping me rn :) I've gotten so lost in my process or working in more of a surrealist/abstract way, mentally it's crippled me haha, this is such a lovely break to paint logically.
