    I learned not to blend for shading, but rather create the values with the paint. TY

    When a subject is in full light without large shadows, look for highlights on the corner of planes. Thanks, I'm going to remember that one.

    One of the most useful videos I've ever come across. This channel is definitely in the top two of all the art channels I watch. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I've learned more here than from all art school teachers combined.

    As I am working on portraits at this point , and gaining more insight and understanding of portrait painting, I found this video to be a great example of carving out plains and rounding the forms with color instead of blending . This video is a great example of info that is relevant to me , as you tube hasn't failed us in the instructional programming dept. And the art community is laying a strong example of the best technical information to allow all who practice this science to achieve they're best.
    And in my book , that's great .
    More creativity in the world is always a good thing , so thank you for this great example of advanced art techniques so well done .

      I completely agree! I reckon the whole reason we're seeing a resurgence in the popularity in realist painting down to the internet and the knowledge we all know have access to. When I went to Art school here in the UK in back in 94, it was like the human race had forgotten how to draw. You just couldn't find out about artists or teachers who worked from life. Then I found out about the guy who first taught me in 2004 throughout the internet. Since then things have only been growing.

    • @punkisinthedetails1470
      @punkisinthedetails1470 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting Who was the guy the first taught you? Do you mean you learned through him from an internet source or is it an instructor you used to have that you now have come to realize is more reknowned than you knew in the past

    • @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting
      @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@punkisinthedetails1470 No, I found out about his classes in London. His name in Nick Bashall and he's a well known portrait painter here in the UK. He still teaches here:
      www.nickbashall.com/teaching
      Since starting with him 15 years ago, I then became aware of Richard Schmid and all the other amazing realist painters there are out there who offer books and dvd's etc. When I first went to art school when I was 19, there was no way of knowing any of this existed.

    • @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting
      @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I say Nick is well known, but I'd never heard of him until I met him. Portrait painting is still quite niche here in the uk, despite its growing popularity.

    • @punkisinthedetails1470
      @punkisinthedetails1470 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting Thanks for the excellent reply and info I really appreciate it. I think Portrait painting vitally important and a true test of skill. I think portrait painting is growing because of innovative but still realistic styles. Historically portrait painting can seem quite dry to some audiences and painters alike so it takes someone like Jenny Saville for example to reinvigorate and redefine what is possible and acceptable. I think your work holds in that same vain. It is realistic but with a unique style still painterly enough to be compelling to other artists and audiences alike. Like you said much of what is available now has not always been accessible and I think many people benefit from artists such as yourself sharing those valuable sources of information and ideas. You absolutely simplify the process and take the fear factor away but without losing any of the magic.

    Wow! To great and useful ways of classical approach. It reminds me to pay more attention on my value and plane transitions... the middle value that connects lights and shades is crucial to render a convincent transition (avoid blending values). Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
