Sargent's productivity is mind boggling, because he and his colleagues weren't confronted with all these useless distractions we hav to deal with almost every day! And in our time it is going to get even worse. "Every era has its own art" so while I and all the other current artists are being RAPED by A.I. I try my hardest to remain pure at heart ( my Art loving heart) And when I am able to sell my art I try to support the truth loving segment of our society under threat! Have a nice day every one!

He also chose not to be married or have really any meaningful romantic relationships that would get in his way. He was a generational force and would have done well even in todays world of distractions

Great synopsis! I recently picked up a book " John S. Sargent-194 Master drawings" and it is epic! I think his use of middle tones is the magic of his art.

I can't get enough of these fabulous presentations by the Gammell Lack Institute of American Art. The commentary is precise, uncomplicated and the voice is so pleasant and easy to hear. The finest of art too.

When you walk into the Gardner Museum in Boston, I hope you still see the wall size Sargent painting of the Spanish dancer perfectly lit against the slightly dim vestibule so she seems to actually be there, the whole scene, close to life size, glowing and perfectly lit. The first time I saw it there it made me jump back in surprise.

The ideas that enabled him to succeed, principly, "..can never sketch enough!". His views ...there's no subject that shouldnt be drawn..Portraits showed personality ++ Thank you for this!

Brilliant artist, brilliant video. This video is not only well put together, but the narration is at the right pace (unlike the horrible tendency for new videos to be narrated at the speed of light). Thank you!

I’m a big fan of Sargent…and this shows why. I’m of a similar thought and approach even though I’m self taught. I went from high school to the pros, and never looked back. Except for the schooling, Sargent and I are much alike. Great video.

This was so wonderful - I can’t wait to watch it again! JSS was so vigilant in his artistic efforts…what he produced is such a treasure for the world. Was recently in Boston for the MFA Singer exhibit and it was joyous. We also visited the Boston Public Library to see the murals and oh, how glorious they are (and that building is incredible). Thanks for sharing the information about these murals as well. Beautifully narrated, enough time to really look at the drawings as they are on screen….just so well done…I love your videos and am so grateful! Now, so generously inspired, I’m off to grab my pencil, lol!

Thank you for this insightful reflection on this great master. One feels immediately uplifted by that confidence and utter beauty of the merest strokes that portray so much meaning and depth. The charcoal portraits alone feel like a collection of personal friends as Sargent takes us by the hand so gently and into the soul and character of each unique individual. Your comparison with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel seems most apt🌹❤️🙌🏼👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Thank you for this! But you really need to do another video on the crisis that the rejection of his magnificent Madam X portrait created in his life.
The hypocrisy of Parisian “High” society over a painting that depicted a fallen strap off the shoulder of the evening gown of a young, beautiful, proud and confident American woman was just too much for the French to bear. And its rejection was a devastating blow to both Sargent and the woman “Madam X”.
In short, Singer and his portrait career in France, was cancelled.
The money he had just spent on his new Parisian studio, all wasted, his future commissions, all evaporated, his future in French society was just completely gone.
His friend, in a letter, wrote that he was worried about Sargents mental health, when he dove into a rocky shoreline and hit his head on a rock.
Fortunately Sargent went back to England, and stayed with some friends, painted the local landscape and began that incredible painting “Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose.”
But that whole experience nearly wrecked him and is worthy of its own video.
