Kind of the beauty of bagpipes. There was a musical trend across Europe idolising the continuous note, instruments that could play one note without interruption forever. Paul Foust that’s the point honestly. Bagpipes are a tool of war used to convey orders over the sound of battle. Imagine being a young Scottish man headed into battle for the first time, scared out of your wits, until suddenly you hear the same songs you’ve heard almost everyday for your entire life. The same songs your brothers, father grandfathers, and great grandfathers had all fought and died to. Suddenly the fear leaves your body and you know you have a job to do.

Scots are not Irish at all. Old 19th century Irish national invention. The first people of what is now Ireland were British. And Ireland is within the British isles as a small offshore British island. It was later conquered by waves of other people. The original real Irish were called 'Hiberni' in Latin after that, while the Scots were called Scoti. The people of Scotland were just called 'Picts' by Roman Eumenius in 297AD. The Scots conquered northern Hibernia and had the northern parts of both islands of the British isles while the Hiberni/Irish and Anglo/English were the southerners who had the southern parts. The early Scots settlers of Ireland were told by Leo X that they were lying when they said they were Scotti and their country was Scotia, and had that name 'Irish' imposed on them with the Hiberni (real Irish of the time) commonality of the land. What this meant was that the Scots of Hibernia/Ireland lost their original identity while the Scots of Scotland/Caledonia kept their identity and name to this day. Scots-Gaidhlig (pronounced "Gah-lick" in Scotland) was originally just called 'Scottis' up till the 16th century, so it was a Scottish language. And the Irish annals of the four master's refers to Alba (Scotland's real name in Gaidhlig) as the name for the old Pict kingdom. So Scotland has always had it's real name and identity, it's just the change of languages and perspectives that confuse some people. The Ireland that you describe in nationalistic fervour didn't exist when Scotland and England did, it was a conquered land of disunited petty kingdoms that owed allegiances to other factions, it was not the United front that the kingdom of Scotland (843) or Kingdom of England (927) was, the kingdom of Ireland was formed as late as 1542 and this was by King Henry VIII of England who established it, which goes back to when Pope Adrian VI established the 'lordship of Ireland' which was a Papo - possession of the kingdom of England.
Quick fact back in ww1 they use to pick of the Scottish first because the intimidation of them and u could always tell which where Scottish from there kilts and tatters
Incorrect, they were often picked off first for the same reasons why the french were, they didnt wear camouflage unlike other nations in the trenches meaning they were easy to spot. That's why modern day soldiers dont wear bright uniforms.
At my great grandparents funerals, we had a gentleman playing this song while we were burying them. Beautiful song and I get chills every time I hear it.
This→most beautiful melody of all time has always been my favorite song. I know not why I hummed it at 2-1/2 to 3 years old. Yes, I remember stuff @ 2yrs old, living in the Pinner Eng., & son of my Lt. Colonel Father who was stationed at RAF South Ruislip from 1959-1961(( S. Ruislip was a U.S. Air Force's 3rd Air Force Base from 1949 until 1972)) Later, after moving back to the States & still a boy, I remembered the song and would hum it as little kids do. Now retired in Texas & wearing a cowboy hat, I still remember the Great Tune, "Scotland the Brave". It has been with me all my life...I do not remember hearing the song anywhere before I began humming it at 2-1/2 yrs old. I know the tune's origin, & origin of the lyrics, just am unable to answer why I knew that tune & always liked it above all other music. Perhaps it could easily be said, "he heard it 1st". However, since "I am me" & I never remember hearing it, or comments of my parents about it....well... Is something that is a part of a man's life, for the entirety of his years, also a part of his soul? Who knows? But it has always been my favorite song. Hats off to all Scots!
If you take a stand for what you believe in. Will fight for it. Die for it. Sacrifice ALL for it no matter the cost, then we are ALL Scottish in some form or fashion. This is a warrior song. Be a WARRIOR in life....ALWAYS. God bless Scotland.
You have to understand this music in the appropriate context. You heard this played as you stared down a few hundred or thousand highland warriors. This shrill wail is not intended to be casual music, it is the song of battle.
Love this, I'm half Canadian/Scottish ... my father immigrated from Scotland to Canada years ago, Scotland the brave is the ringtone on my phone... a piper is the back ground on my pc... and I have a tattoo of a warrior in a kilt with the Scotland flag on my arm.... because my dad is my hero........ love you ol timer

I'm Turkish Cypriot living in the UK and have always felt empowered while listening to a bagpipe, the sound to me - is so medieval yet modern at the same time Lots of love and respect to the Scottish people
Didn't know until I was in my mid twenties how deep our Scottish ancestry runs. Had an uncle who traced our ancestry for 20 years with one of the top genealogists in Scotland and told our uncle that there is a lot of evidence pointing towards our Clan Campbell being the same ones that fought with William Wallace. Maybe that is why I have loved hearing the bagpipes playing even as a child.
There is a legend that during World War II an English regiment was pinned down by the Germans and requested either a tank company or 2 Scottish pipers...True story there was an unarmed piper who piped the troops on to Juno Beach on D-Day. Collins clan on my grandmothers side....

I remember in school when remembrance day they always had bagpipes playing and the chills that came with it never compared to anything I've ever seen. I get chills listening to this and just thinking about it.
During WW1 they had scottish regiments storming to this, surprising succesfull. When I hear this I feel like cracking skulls. And Im not even remotely scottish.
I'm like 3% Scottish, but this song makes that 3% feel damn patriotic.
Same
me too!
I'm not Scottish, but damn do I wish I was after listening to this.
I'm 50 ℅ Scottish😉
I'm 0% Scottish, but I've got an Uncle who's Scottish, I've been to his wedding (wearing a kilt) and ANYTIME I hear Bagpipes played right, I always think of two things: Him and how underrated Bagpipes are.
I don't understand how anyone can hate the bagpipes. Ever since I was a pup I've loved the sound
I used to have a neighbor when i lived in dearborn who was scottish. Every saturday morning i would wake up to this.
Best way to wake up
I was looking for this song even though I'm not Scottish I love this song I love BAGPIPES. And some stupid people don't even though I'm not Scottish I love bagpipes. Thank you every time this song brings me to tears.😭😢😢😢

dr inferno when you realize Scottish are mostly descended of Irish who came during the dark ages to the Scotland and gaelicize the Picts
dr inferno I won’t lie this actually made me chuckle out loud 😂
SHäge Lowland Scots, not all Scottish.
Bandit majority of the Hebrides and some of western highlands that’s why you have mc in your surnames
Not so true it was actually the French who were picked off due to there bright uniform and officers wearing red pants
Blammo Loc don’t think that’s what he was saying
Incorrect, they were often picked off first for the same reasons why the french were, they didnt wear camouflage unlike other nations in the trenches meaning they were easy to spot. That's why modern day soldiers dont wear bright uniforms.
The Germans called the bagpipers leading the charges ‘ladies from hell’ or ‘devils in skirts’

I Googled "that one bagpipe song" and this was the first result and the thing I was looking for.
Finally, the full piece of music. Every video on TH-cam with Scotland the Brave only involves the same couple of bars over and over again.
Damn right and I'm a nationalist from the U.S.
Nationalism is dumb.
A tribute to the dead. A tribute to the saints and the damned. A tribute to the true Patriots.
just because you hate your country doesnt mean its dumb. Nationalism is an important belief for most people around the world.

You have to understand this music in the appropriate context. You heard this played as you stared down a few hundred or thousand highland warriors. This shrill wail is not intended to be casual music, it is the song of battle.
Under a British banner.

Bagpipes mean one of two things.
1. Reinforcements/ rescue has arrived.
2. The enemy is about to get a mud hole stomped in them.
