you jsut kinda like move the drones up or down to change the sound produced or if it’s rlly bad u change the drone reed slightly for mega changes. Or just play with out of tune drones…
The “official” national anthem of Scotland is actually “Flower of Scotland”. With Scotland not being an independent nation it technically doesn’t actually have one but “Flower of Scotland” is the most commonly regarded as the national anthem. Other contenders are “Scotland the Brave” (as you played), “Scots wa hae”, and “Highland Cathedral” (for if you need inspiration for your upcoming videos)
@@CrissMasta It was written by Germans, but for Scotland. I’ve always loved the fact that a couple of theoretical foreigners wrote one of the most Scottish tunes in existence. :-)
Hate to break it to you but we most certainly do not have an ‘official’ anthem 😂 What we actually have is an ‘unofficial’ album of 8 or so songs that get carted out. Which one you get depends on the event and which one is popular in the region. It was decided that we were allowed to have the power to choose one but it wasn’t deemed politically important and the last time it was brought up in parliament, the MSP in question was told to drop it.
I. LOVE. Bagpipes. I'm a competitive Irish Dancer and was also on my school's performing team for quite a while, meaning we shared a lot of venues with bagpipe players (Especially on St Patrick's day). It's really, really fun. Your love of them makes me feel somewhat validated, in a weird way. Love your vids!
When you first started out... your neighbors probably thought you were doing something dark with a Canadian goose... Myself, I think bagpipes really are amazing. Look forward to seeing more piping.
This was so wholesome! Enthusiasm is literally the best thing in the world, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I happen to love bagpipes, so it's extra neat for me. For anyone who hates bagpipes, please understand that they're intended to be played outside in wide open spaces, and you've probably only ever heard them inside, and that truly makes a world of difference.
Also, in my Scottish school on memorial days one guy would play the bagpipes in the middle of the school so the whole building could hear it. When bagpipes are played outside they can be heard for literal miles, so sometimes you get a nice musical surprise if there's an event going on anywhere nearby
Actually loved this though. Seeing people excited and excelling with more "niche" (for lack of a better word), interests/passions/etc. is always so fun. Cool to learn about bagpipes, hope we do see them in more videos.
Earlier this week I was doing an exercise where I was asked to name 5 people I admire - and Daniel Thrasher was on that list. I don't just love his content, I really admire how he takes creative risks and follows his passion to do whatever he wants, regardless of views or attention. I have never seen him hop on any trend for views, ever. And the result may not be for everybody, but for those of us that love it we REALLY love it and it means so much. Daniel, in case you read this, you're an inspiration.
I'm Scottish and I have never seen anyone more excited over bagpipes but the national anthem of Scotland is 'Flower of Scotland' not 'Scotland the Brave'. 'Scotland the Brave' is just a classic bagpipes tune.
I’m Scottish so can’t help but love the bagpipes, I’ve tied to play them in the past and they’re really hard so props to you. I’m from Bathgate and we’ve won best pipe band many many times. Also Highland Cathedral is my personal favourite on the bagpipes 🏴🤷🏻♂️
I'm from cologne, germany, and I can only agree on Highland Cathedral. One of the most famous bands of Cologne's folk music, Bläck Fööss, wrote lyrics to Highland cathedral and called it Du (bes die Stadt), which is one of their most famous songs.
Seeing him so happy, smiling and laughing puts a smile on my face and makes me happy too. I don't even know you personally but I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. 😊 Besides the recorder that almost everyone had to play in school I learned how to play the trombone for music class. Seeing him still passionate about bagpipes makes me feel nostalgic about my memories of the trombone in a way.
It somehow never occurred to me until now that the bag is filled with air beforehand so you can squeeze it while playing to sustain those notes. I thought bagpipers just had inhumanly large lung capacity and were exhaling the entire time.
I follow a piper on IG and the number of people she gets commenting how she "never breathes" because she isn't obvious about it and the bag is the one blowing the pipes is actually kind of horrible hahah! :)
Wow, its awesome how the sound can still come out while you're taking a breath because you're squeezing it. It's kind of like circular breathing. Also didn't know bagpipes have reeds. I'm a bassoonist and am happy to have you join the double reed family.
The circular breathing thing is definitely what led to the bagpipe's development, and iirc, the most primitive form of bagpipe could be considered the bladderpipe, which has just a little bag between one's mouth and the chanter. Usually, they don't have any drones.
Modern day pipes, not sure about super old ones. All have a check valve (called flapper) and the end of the blow pipe. That way instead of circular breathing using your cheeks as the buffer you use the bag.
@@moulderutes7942 Yeah, the older highland pipes, as well as many modern day pipes of non Scottish origin actually don't necessarily have that kind of check valve that prevents air from coming out of the bag through the blowpipe into the user's mouth, so to my understanding, it would be the common practice for those pipers to use the end of their tongue to close the blowpipe as they take a breath.
That feeling when you pick up an instrument after years of not playing even though you used to be very experienced with it. For me, it would be trombone once I actually take mine out of storage.
Me too! I played my trombone for the first time in several years about a week ago. I’ll hopefully get back into it once I have the space for it in my apartment, but for now it sits behind my desk-a very inconvenient place for a trombone.
@@rebeccat7912 "A Very Inconvenient Place for a Trombone" or even just "An Inconvenient Trombone" sounds like the name of a comedy album or something. :)
I just did the same with my trumpet, I just pulled it out of it's case after over 3 years of not playing it and it felt great but sounded fucking awful 🤣
I've got to pick up a violin again. I think the problem with violin and really string instruments of that nature are that with instruments like a piano or even a guitar, if they are in tune the note will sound good, even if played by an inexperienced player, but with something like a violin, so much of whether it sounds good depends on technique, not the instrument itself. that's why whenever I hear most really young children who just started play, i sounds like a squeaky nightmare with maybe a hint of a clean sound in between each stroke. but even I can pluck a guitar string and make a pretty sound. so the longer I wait to pick it back up, the more fear I have that I'll never be able to do it how I did before.
As someone who is Scottish and played bagpipes and also did tap danceing, I would say you did pretty well, and thank you for bringing up the website to help me with my mental health. :)

Finally, after 2 years of waiting for the traveler who dared to risk their life delivering that bagpipe the king can now hear Daniel play the *Sack from Scotland*
He finally got to finger the sack
we finally got to hear him finger the sack
OMG YES
Dont make fun of the bagpipes… if i catch u at that one more time youll have to sleep w one eye open. Also why call them sacks, they aint even soft or floppy
@@Finn-pd6jq pretty sure he's references an old video by Daniel. There are several where 1 of the characters is a medieval(?) king. And pretty sure the king mentioned wanting to hear someone play the Bagpipes, which he called the "Sack from Scotland" but his subject says they'd need to get a traveller to deliver them or something.
Can't name which video exactly but given the previous post I'm assuming it's a video uploaded 2 years ago lol
This is beautiful in so many ways, also your teachers explanation of “you have potential” describes my entire mental state and I love that
Everything suddenly makes so much sense, and I loved the utter joy on your face unboxing the beautiful bagpipes! Can't wait to see them make an appearance in future videos!
This video is a serotonin boost fr, he looks genuinely so happy playing bagpipes love to see it !
Seriously! I’m adding it to my depression buster playlist because it’s really just pure joy. 😂
I couldn't help but smile every time he got excited during the video, it was just so pure
Yeah - among the usual millennial sadness, a few minutes of pure joy. Really appreciated.
as someone who is Scottish It’s really funny to watch you get so excited over bagpipes witch are pretty much our instrument
Out of tune bagpipes is one of the funniest things I've heard in awhile. You could literally release a video that is just an hour of intentionally out of tune bagpipes, and I would be on the floor laughing.
well, about a half hour in the neighbor will bust in with a weapon and we will withness some bloddshed.
Which, considering the instrument's history, its quite fitting.
Daniel is unironically the embodiment of our worst neighbor nightmares. Bagpipes, percussive noises, cats, weird sketches at 3AM and of course let us not forget the many personalities that all live under the same roof.
1:44 man really started playing the free bird solo
Being Scottish born, nothing makes me more proud than hearing the anthem of the motherland, even if a few of the notes are scuffed, great job I could never play the bagpipes lol
Scotland the brave isn’t our National anthem though. Flower of Scotland is

Daniel, your infectious enthusiasm is a joy to watch. I'm proud of you for returning to your childhood roots with such an underrated but magnificent instrument. You better have fun with that.

Daniel being an absolute bag pipe fanboy for five minutes straight is the most wholesome thing I've seen in a while.
*Me questioning how the fuck you tune a bagpipe*
Daniel: *massages it*
Me: oh okay

The “official” national anthem of Scotland is actually “Flower of Scotland”. With Scotland not being an independent nation it technically doesn’t actually have one but “Flower of Scotland” is the most commonly regarded as the national anthem. Other contenders are “Scotland the Brave” (as you played), “Scots wa hae”, and “Highland Cathedral” (for if you need inspiration for your upcoming videos)
Highland Cathedral is actually a german song ^^
SCOTLAND FOREVERRRRERR
@@CrissMasta It was written by Germans, but for Scotland. I’ve always loved the fact that a couple of theoretical foreigners wrote one of the most Scottish tunes in existence. :-)
Hate to break it to you but we most certainly do not have an ‘official’ anthem 😂
What we actually have is an ‘unofficial’ album of 8 or so songs that get carted out. Which one you get depends on the event and which one is popular in the region.
It was decided that we were allowed to have the power to choose one but it wasn’t deemed politically important and the last time it was brought up in parliament, the MSP in question was told to drop it.
Most Scottish people would say the national anthem is flower of scotland
I. LOVE. Bagpipes. I'm a competitive Irish Dancer and was also on my school's performing team for quite a while, meaning we shared a lot of venues with bagpipe players (Especially on St Patrick's day). It's really, really fun. Your love of them makes me feel somewhat validated, in a weird way. Love your vids!
As a Scot this is amazing,,, I've never seen someone more excited to play the bagpipes
When you first started out... your neighbors probably thought you were doing something dark with a Canadian goose... Myself, I think bagpipes really are amazing. Look forward to seeing more piping.

As a fellow piper, 'mouthsterity' is a perfect way to express how you can be fit AF and still fail at bagpipes because your lips let you down
This was so wholesome!

Also Scottish 🎉
Dont read my name! 😑
Highland Cathedral gets me every damn time. Up there with the Tennants advert with Caledonia.
I'm from cologne, germany, and I can only agree on Highland Cathedral. One of the most famous bands of Cologne's folk music, Bläck Fööss, wrote lyrics to Highland cathedral and called it Du (bes die Stadt), which is one of their most famous songs.
For me I’d say Loch lomond
Seeing him so happy, smiling and laughing puts a smile on my face and makes me happy too. I don't even know you personally but I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. 😊
Besides the recorder that almost everyone had to play in school I learned how to play the trombone for music class. Seeing him still passionate about bagpipes makes me feel nostalgic about my memories of the trombone in a way.
The fact that Daniel acts so childish when opening a new instrument is amazing❤❤❤❤
Daniel fangirling over bagpipes is so wholesome
It somehow never occurred to me until now that the bag is filled with air beforehand so you can squeeze it while playing to sustain those notes. I thought bagpipers just had inhumanly large lung capacity and were exhaling the entire time.
I follow a piper on IG and the number of people she gets commenting how she "never breathes" because she isn't obvious about it and the bag is the one blowing the pipes is actually kind of horrible hahah! :)
Bagpipe is simultaneously the most majestic sounding instument and also the most hilarious (it is a glorified squeaky toy)
“For those of you who don’t know…”
Who the heck knew that you were a competitive bagpiper in middle school?
Probably his mom discovered his secret life of fighting crime and winning bagpipe competitions years ago.
Daniel being a bagpiper is actually so fitting... it's like he was meant to play it.
3:39 ah one of my favourite bagpipe songs which is Scotland the brave.Impressive!(im not Scottish just a roblox guts and blackpowder player lol )
There’s a double reed in the chanter and then one in each drone as well
That feeling when you pick up an instrument after years of not playing even though you used to be very experienced with it.
I hope you'll pick it up eventually :)
3:36 i love how he starts keeping time with his foot but then gives up as soon as he starts playing
As someone who is Scottish and played bagpipes and also did tap danceing, I would say you did pretty well, and thank you for bringing up the website to help me with my mental health. :)
