I can't defend the confederacy on slavery for it is a truly evil practice.
But I will defend the Confederacy for wanting to secede.
My main argument is they did not like the way the country was going, so decided to strike out themselves, and since the constitution provided no way for anyone to secede, they decided to do it by force.
Which is the supreme law of the land.

@@michaelgranholm7598Completely incorrect. The burden of proof, shall we say, is on the federal govt to prohibit actions by the states; that is, to show cause in the Constitution where an action is prohibited or is the purview of the federal govt. The burden is NOT on the seceding state to find permission but on the federal govt to show where it's prohibited. With respects, you have the burden reversed.
The Xth Amendment plainly says all powers not granted to the federal government in the Constitution are reserved to the states. Since the power to secede goes unmentioned in the Constitution, that means such admittedly drastic action is reserved to each state to decide.
This is the entire reason I'm an unreconstructed rebel: there's no legal proof in our governing documents or statutory law at the time that shows secession to be illegal or treasonous.
That be the case, the southern states's various ordinances of secession, delivered to Washington (Congress) in late '60-early '61 should've been honored. Instead, the representatives of the then seven seeding states were laughed out of town. Following Sumter, and Lincoln's call for 5,000 men from each state to put down SC, the other four passed secession ordinances, all signed off on, as with the previous seven, by their respective governors.

Nevermind the fact that the South for years was effectively shitting on States' Rights via stuff like the Fugitive Slave Act and and Free Speech by confiscating/burning abolitionist pamphlets and newspapers, got away with it for decades since slaves gave them huge influence in Congress seats/in the Electoral College and economic power to the top plantation owners who would barely make even 1% of the South's population, and how the Dred Scott case effectively pissed all over the dignity of any Black person's rights and the constant compromises made to get the South to shut the fuck up. They only started the "States' Rights" echo chamber 20 years after the war ended.
Nevermind the majority of Southern Politicians wanting to expand slavery across the newly-acquired territories, if not parts of Latin America, too, and many Republicans + Lincoln would've been content with just keeping slavery where it was.
Nevermind all the CSA states' constitutions saying that they left due to slavery, Alexander Stephens stating it was due to slavery, slavery outmentioning tariffs tenfold in Virginia debates, the free black civilians Lee took when going on his Maryland and Pennsylvania campaigns, and that after Blacks were accepted into the Union Army, the Confederacy stated that if captured, those troops would be either enslaved or executed, the latter of which was done on places such as Ft. Pillow and the Battle of the Crater.
Nevermind the 99% in the South who accepted slavery either in the unlikely hopes that they can buy them in the future or that it gave them someone lower than them on the social ladder.
Nevermind how Georgia treated the Cherokee, even though the latter had effectively embraced the Southern lifestyle and won a Supreme Court battle against the state, only for Jackson to turn a blind eye to Georgians kicking out the Cherokee anyways once gold got discovered.
This wasn't about them defending their homeland or states' rights. This was about their way of life, one of being the abusive and greedy roommate to the North who left the moment someone who could even stall their hopes of expanding their aristocratic institution of slavery got elected.

The best song that spoke to the meat of the matter who was going to take care of the Southern soldiers' wives, children & aged mothers? Pres. Lincoln should have received the CSA's Peace Mission & given them the nice letter he did send out pointing out that there should be reconciliation for a war the South couldn't win once it became a war of attrition! At the Hampton Roads Peace Conference the South should have taken the better deal offered then by Lincoln to end the fighting as they were then losing! I have the North & South bloodlines in me each on one side of my family! The Republican Party ended up being the Party of Patriots with the demoncRATS ending up the Party of Treason in the end!

@@nghtwtchmn129 The guy, despite being an avid abolitionist, knew it'd be stupid to start being forceful to the South and just wanted slavery to stay put where it was. Besides, if he went after the Border States, the Union would've been fucked, because either DC gets blockaded or the Mississippi is cut off. Even then, Delaware only had 1800 slaves by 1860 and slavery wasn't common in western Maryland, and was nowhere near what Kentucky or Missouri was.

Nevermind slave populations giving the South a massive boost in representation in the House, huge influence over the electoral college, made the plantation owners, who were a minutia of the region's population, massive amounts of money, and gave the lower classes a people they could claim superiority over.
Nevermind how the South were quite eager to trample over the Northern States and even the Supreme Court's rights and power if it meant they could get a tighter stranglehold over the slavery question, such as the Fugitive Slave Act and confiscating/burning abolitionist pamphlets/books, thereby violating freedom of speech. The Cherokee won a Supreme Court case that stated Georgia couldn't expand into their lands, but the moment gold was discovered, the state did so anyways and Jackson ignored it. The Dred Scott case all but stated all African-Americans were not citizens and that keeping slavery out of Northern territories was viewed as 'unconstitutional'.
Nevermind how Lee's army captured Blacks that were never slaves during the Antietam and Gettysburg campaigns, and pressed them into service anyway.
Nevermind how the Confederacy stated that any non-officer of the USCT captured were to be either enslaved or executed, the latter was done with glee at Ft. Pillow and the Battle of the Crater.
Nevermind how Alexander Stephens stated they did it for slavery when the CSA was the declared, all the seceding states stating it was for slavery, and did so as soon as Lincoln won the election, even though he made it clear he and a good chunk of Republicans would've been content with just letting slavery stay where it was. Sure, some cried foul over tariffs, but the topic of slavery outmentioned it ten times over.
Nevermind the constant Southern hopes to expand slavery to not just the remainder of Southern US territories, at minimum, but to the Caribbean and Latin America, as well (Golden Circle).
It was for their way of life, all right, one of slavery, trying to keep their aristocratic system ever more powerful, and to not let the Union put their foot down once.

Deo Vindice! The Russians, raising against ukrainian' nazis in Donbass, fought their way back to their Motherland Russia under the flag, looking exactly like the battle flag of the Confederation not by chance. As far as I know the Southern Cross is not greeted now by US officials - but it became one of the official flags in Russia, loved and respected by most of the Russians. I have a lot of friends who reconstruct the uniforms, weapons and tactics of almost all periods of history, your Civil war is among them. Though this period is very popular, the fans use to say that it is very hard to "reconstruct" the battles - practically no volunteers to play the roles of yankees....
