I don’t like that the processor is slower than the rp4 pro. I have the mini and GameCube for instance runs much better on rp4 pro. I have the rp5 ordered as well but I’m disappointed and think it’s a bit shady releasing a slower product as a new entry.

D1100 is a very capable chip when it comes to what we use it for in a retro handheld. More than enough power for two to three years while Android devs figure out how to emulate more than ps2. If you have a game that is demanding of more power buy an Odin 2. And I know the Odin 2 isn't too expensive for you because you spent $400 on two devices with the same performance level that you already owned

I've seen people say "just buy a phone with the same chip and slap a controller on it," but it's really not the same as a dedicated device. The phone+controller hybrid is even larger and unwieldy unless you remove the controller between play sessions which doesn't make it convenient. This might not fit in a pants pocket but it might fit in a jacket pocket the phone+controller wouldn't without removing the controller, additionally you're burning phone battery in long gameplay sessions that might be needed later for actual phone stuff. I'm honestly right on the verge of pulling out the credit card and buying my first Retroid product. It might not be perfect, but It's feeling like we'll never see an _actual_ perfect device, just one that's "close enough."

I appreciate that you’re suggesting phones with similar chipsets as a cheaper option for emulation, but it's worth noting that these phones lack active cooling. Without it, they tend to thermal throttle during longer emulation sessions, which impacts performance. This is where a handheld like the Retroid really shines, since it has built-in active cooling, making it better suited for extended play. Emulating on phones is convenient, but they definitely come with some limitations

    • @PocketPixels-z2m
      @PocketPixels-z2m 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

@@SomtochukwuOnyenaucheya You're adding a lot of bulk to this setup, and it becomes far from convenient for portability. Sure, you can get a phone, controller, cooler, and power bank, but most telescopic controllers don’t even allow space to attach a cooler unless it’s built-in, like the GameSir X3. And even then, the X3 still needs a separate power source since it doesn’t draw power from the phone.
If you’re using an Xbox or PS4 controller, you’ll also need a phone clip, and most clips block room for a cooler. Even if you somehow manage to attach everything, you’re stuck with constant cables and battery management just to avoid overheating.
While this setup might work for some, it’s hardly portable and far less streamlined than a dedicated handheld like the Retroid. With a handheld, everything-controls, cooling, and battery life-is built in for gaming, without the extra attachments. And while it might seem cheaper to use a phone, good quality accessories add up, and handhelds are designed to run games consistently without the hassle. It’s just a more practical, portable solution

It looks fantastic. And it seems like a nice step up from the first Ayn Odin for relatively the same price. Sure, the Odin 2 has an ever better SoC, but at $300+ you might as well buy a Steam Deck and have the ultimate handheld console that not only crushes every emulator you throw at it but actually runs AAA PC games like GoW Ragnarok.
At around $200 this is the perfect medium between the cheaper handheld emulators and the Steam Deck. It’s not as powerful as the latter, but still offers a premium experience that is significantly better in every aspect than what you get for a sub $200 price tag.
Personally, after owning a bunch of them, I’ve noticed Android handhelds aren’t for me and I tend to just grab the ROG Ally or Steam Deck for the added size and power, or use my phone with a controller.
But that’s my personal preference, and does nothing to diminish that this looks like a great handheld device.

I don’t know much about chipsets, so my question to you would be is the exynos 2400 chip better than the snapdragon685 found in the pocket 5 as I’m really considering picking up this handheld.

Guys, Google snapdragon 865 vs Dimnesity 1100 (rp4p) and check the bench marks etc. They're very very similar in power, so please manage your expectations. If you want switch and winlator, then odin 2 is the device you need to be looking at.

Great Video. 🌞👍🏽 The Retroid Pocket 4 - especially the Pro version - is of course superior & cheaper at the same time, even if only looking at the specs. The "5" version has only a greater display. It's up to each person what they prefer at the end of the day, of course.

ETA, if you read this, I'm curious if you're still going to do a full review of the Anbernic RG406V? Or has the Retroid Pocket 5 family completely made it irrelevant in your eyes? I'm still interested in the RG406V because of its good enough performance + appealing fat Game Boy form factor. Your first look seemed promising, but, that was a while ago.

My main issue with a device like this would be the button/d-pad, joystick layout. I just don’t like the placements, tight layout space and the overall device size is too small and outdated for how I like something to fit in my hands. I use a Galaeo G8+ and swap between an 8 inch Samsung tablet and iPad mini. Might seem big for some but for me it’s closer to a Nintendo Switch size which is more my style comfort and fit wise. $220 isn’t a bad price point considering what you get but I just wouldn’t want to adjust to the button layout.

If the price was right and you only really just need it to play on the couch or the bed away from your desktop PC (or a gaming notebook that you use like a transportable desktop replacement, regardless of actual size classification) using SteamLink, this is a good idea.
"But you might already have a phone so you just need an accordion controller!" That's what I was thinking before, but
    1. I don't have a lot of time to charge in the morning before work, so I'd much rather not use my phone.
    2. It's a PITA looking for accordion controllers that can fit on my 11in tablet, and even for the ones that can fit my tablet (including those that needs some level of modding)...
    3. ...I keep seeing articles red flagging the manufacturers' button-mapping software on some of these accordion controllers as security risks, which sounds like a bad idea considering my bank apps are on the same tablet. Ditto everybody else's phones.
    4. FF Tactics for Android doesn't work with controllers anyway.
So for now what I ended up doing was get a bad clamp arm for my tablet to hold it at eye level while I use the same controller I use for my gaming PC. The tablet is basically just a wireless display.
