the only reason i don't wanna upgrade to the 5 is this 1) If i really want performance, I can spring for the Odin 2 Mini with its 8G2 processor while also having a similar footprint, or go big with the Odin 2. Sure, the jump between D1100 and 865 is decent (especially with Turnip drivers) but it still can't square up fully with 8G2, much less if you're intending to dock and requiring to use higher upscale. 2) most of the games I play on the retroid are Gamecube which is fine to play at 1.5-2x on that small screen. I ain't using a dock to play on my PC monitor or TV where I have to upscale a lot and in turin causing lag etc 3) If I really want best performance for PS2 games, I would just play on PC cuz PCSX2 Exists. 4) the issue now is emulation efficiency on emulator apps on android. Switch is barely on life support with takedowns and PS2 emulator development has stalled for the most part. back to #1 Odin 2 really hit the highest point for android emulation performance already cuz 8G2 is still relatively new while being the same processor as last year's flagship phones like S23 etc. and lastly the dumbest reason 5) I love the watermelon colour a lot it's a shame the 5 doesn't have much colour options. The watermelon colour definitely adds more spa-zazz and personality than just the black/white/"off white" style colours.
Between the gc, 16bit and the screen blending effect of the black device, there are already enough color options to make your decision a living hell. I don't need more options, I want less, because I can't decide already :D

Yeah for GC it's like night and day. Unfortunately not for PS2 though...but hey you are mostly going to set the resolution to 2.5x most of the time to match the screen so no biggie
Form factor is king for me, I love the design of the 4 Pro. I'm not sold on the look of the RP5. I have an RG556 and it is nice for sitting at home on the couch, but I'd never take it anywhere with me, whereas I rarely go anywhere without the RP4 Pro. It won that spot despite me thinking it was too small a screen for the price for the longest time. Now, if I reach for anything bigger than the RP4 Pro, I'm generally grabbing the Steam Deck. What I'd have loved is the design of the 4 Pro, with the Snapdragon chip and larger screen (because I'm certain they could have fit a full 5 inch screen - or 4.95 like the TrimUI Smart Pro). That might have made me jump. As it is now, I'll wait to see what the RP6 looks like. I'm sure the RP5 will be a hit and people will love it, but it isn't for me. Thanks for this comparison though.
I just bought a RP4P and am currently awaiting its delivery from Retroid. £155 for a brand new RP4P with the bugs ironed out (triggers) was plenty for me to be paying out. I might get hit with customs yet which will probably put me in at £190/£200. If I had bought the 5 I’d be looking around £250/260 at that point I’m starting to look at a steam deck.
@ I have had mine a couple weeks now and I love it. I got rid of my analogue pocket and have this. Okay it’s emulation vs fpga so hardly a comparison to the purists but with that being said this has all the benefits and no negatives imo. Originally I was sceptical of having an android based system but now I appreciate it. A bit of tinkering and the UI looks great plus we have the google playstore. There’s nothing like playing PS1 in your lunch break and then moving on to Streets Of Rage 4
So good reading these comments after pulling the trigger on the rp4p yesterday. It’s my first handheld and I was shopping for the 5 but the discount on the 4 was just to good for what it can do and what I want to play.
First time android retro handhled buyer here (I have a modded PS Vita). Thank you for that video. I am convinced I can get by with the 4Pro for what I want to play (PS2 mostly). And since I'm on a budget it's even better.
It's obvious that the RP5 is better in a real world scenario. But this video actually reminded me of how impressive the RP4P actually is! I have the RP4P and I just pre-ordered the Odin2 Portal. So upgrading to the RP5 seems unnecessary at this point.
I have a R4 Pro. It is a totally luxury purchase for me. The slight performance bump is really not good enough to have an upgrade. Retroid upgrades their products all the time. I just really want the screen.
Just the video I was looking for. Have an RP4 Pro and mostly play PS2, doesn't really seem worth it just for that, but the screen would be the main upgrade unless you're playing a lot of GC.
Thanks for that comparison, top notch! For me, though - if I wanted Switch gaming I'd just use my Switch Lite. This is Retro handheld first and foremost, and Android gaming second. RP4 Pro is more than enough for this task
Thank you so much for making a comparison video between the 2! I bought a 4 pro when it came out and wanted to see if it was worth upgrading. I dont emulate anything past 6th generation and i never upscale anything so the 4 pro is good enough for me it seems
Very useful, thx! I have a rp4 pro and play a LOT with AR glasses so the rp5 screen, while nice, is not a major factor for me. I think I'll wait for the rp6 or just get an odin 2.
How do you only have 92 subs?! I've been looking for a creator that has almost no subs so that I can watch a meteoric rise take place in real time, and brother I just found my channel.
@@bassderek I've thought about starting TH-cam myself, I run a small PC and retro game shop and it would be cool to use it as some extra reach for the business. It's great to see someone jump in feet first and do a really good job at it, definitely inspires me to get going on my own.
Slightly larger (but in my opinion worse) screen, performance that is more of a guarantee that everything will run well upscaled (though the RP5 handles most ps2/gc at at least 2x no problem), top joystick location, possibly more comfortable for joystick games (depending on your hands). I didn't bond with the Odin 2 and would rather have this for the OLED screen and smaller size.
So I have the rp4pro and it suffers on high detailed games I was wondering how to you fix resolution cuz I do want to try baldurs gate dark alliance and games like surf up
For some games you may need to drop the resolution multiplier. There are also just some games that unfortunately have poor compatibility with emulation as it stands right now.
The main differences are 2gb more ram in the 5 and Android 13 instead of 10 but I think in practice they’re going to be pretty similar as they have the same chip.
Good topic, I like this. Can you compare the RG556 as well? I know some users are considering selling to get the quality screen and ergonomics we're used to but with better sticks and performance. Unclear how much better that performance really is yet though for what might be an extra $50-$70 plus shipping depending what how much you sell the RG556 for
I've never actually played on nether. Is it still required that we patch aether to update it and get nether working? Thx Also, is there an easy way to move our current apps on an android over to the rp5? Thx! 🙏
Just want to know if 4pro runs kirby games and pokemon well ? That is the max imma go with switch ! Need it more for gba and gamecube and 3ds which i feel shall work fine on rp4
Great comparison. I'm not a fan of the rp4 and my thoughts are that if it needs a grip to be comfortable to use, the grip may as well be part of the device and so I'm on team rp5
Excellent video, I ordered the new devicer. but I am confused whether it can run ps5 and Switch smoothly? I don't care about upgrading the resolution, the important thing is that the all games works ?
what about PC games? I know, Android consoles are not the best for it, but i wanna know if can play some retro games like Vampire The Masquerade, Fable or Diablo II
Almost bought this, but ordered the Odin Pro instead as I mostly need a machine to get my daughter off my Steam Deck for playing Minecraft, and she prefers stick on top.
Yeah I thought so too. But I checked and at least in dolphin, vulkan ran much faster. I actually re did some of the benches for the video because of that.
@bassderek true I only use it for ps1 and PS2 rn and I kinda dip in some vita and 3ds emulation. Outside of some graphical error with mkdd dolphin runs okayish?
I am very tempted to grab a 5 but there are some big handhelds coming out soon that I'd rather have. The Ayaneo 3 and my Evo that should be shipping eventually. If i grab another android handheld it will likely be an Ayaneo Pocket Micro.
I hear ya, I have an evo and Odin 2 portal both on order and will keep whichever I like better. I guess I’ll see if the 5.5” is enough or the 7” is worth it.
Why and how is Retroid able to build a device so fast (going from RP4 to RP5 in just months) whereas big companies take years and years to develop theirs (thinking of the Switch 2 which has taken too many years to come out, and thinking of the xbox handheld which is a couple years away.
This also means that an RP6 will be coming in what.. the next 6 months? It's a bit annoying knowing that the RP5 will probably be outdated in the next 6months - 1 year
They are totally different products. We don’t want big companies to release this frequently. And they have much more rigorous testing and quality control. These handhelds are more like a phone with a controller strapped on than a real gaming console. Consoles have rigorous QC and testing, game libraries and development to think of, huge marketing, the list goes on.
I picked up a new in box pocket 4 pro for $140 on fb marketplace today, I was debating getting the pocket 5 but since I already have an odin 2 portal pre-ordered I felt that the price difference was too large for me to justify the rp5 over the deal I got on the 4 pro.
You answered my question with Gran turismo 4 it was laggy on the 4 pro and i see its not any better on the 5 i wont be upgrading how ever the 5 looks amazing along with the screen
People should be aware for switch emulation the retroid pocket 5 is better because you can change the gpu drivers to “turnip drivers” this makes games like breath of the wild playable and fixes major graphical bugs.
I’ve been trying out Mesa 23 Turnip drivers. Those give me the best NES results. If one of you could explain why NBA2K24 plays, but doesn’t show characters that would be great. At the start of tip off during the game when light hits them you can see the character. So I know it’s a graphics issues. When you play the game all the characters are black. Game does play and at a good speed.

I already have a Steamdeck and the RP4 Pro so I won't be buying the RP5. The size of the RP4 Pro is perfect and if I need more power I use the Steamdeck.
not much of a leap for an rp4p owner with the systems I want to play and with the anbernic RG/T820-ish prices makes it more enticing that it can push such numbers all the while fitting in my pocket but snapdragon just might be a better move longterm(?)
@@bassderek yeah can only wish coz I don't see the price for such a single purpose device coming down anytime soon and personally wouldn't make much sense past 300. Hopefully more competing products show up by then. Wonky shipping and taxes included :')
I bought the RP3+, then the RP4Pro dropped a month later. I pulled the plug and got the Watermelon. Three months later this drops, and the whole time, I am like damn it, but the OLED bigger screen keeps tugging at my wallet. I'm doomed.
I’m not sure how it disappoints? It can exceed the device resolution with the exception of some PS2, which still runs at a crisp enough resolution. Maybe I am biased because of the screen, but the screen is wayyyyyyy better.
@@bassderek When it was first announced, many people were comparing specs and stating the 5 was weaker than the 4P and wouldn't play PS2 or GC nearly as well.

RP4pro and RP5 can connect Wi-Fi playing Game together? Thanks
Depends on the emulator but if they are on the same WiFi network it should be possible.
I haven’t been able to decide since the RP2 😅
Hey, maybe better not too fall in the pit of consumerism like some of us 😅
How do you only have 92 subs?!
I've been looking for a creator that has almost no subs so that I can watch a meteoric rise take place in real time, and brother I just found my channel.
This tbh
You flatter me! I just started a week ago. I spent a few months doing some videos as part of another channel before deciding to go solo.
@@bassderek I've thought about starting TH-cam myself, I run a small PC and retro game shop and it would be cool to use it as some extra reach for the business. It's great to see someone jump in feet first and do a really good job at it, definitely inspires me to get going on my own.
@@TierNoneOperator if I wouldn’t have seen this I would’ve thought he had at least 1k subs
ahh the standard youtube commenter ass kissing. got to love it. this channel is nothing special infact its a bit shit
I’d like to see a comparison like this with the RG Cube vs RP Mini 🤔🎮
I don’t actually have a cube, but that’s a good idea to show the difference between the T820 and SD865. Maybe if/when an rg406h arrives.
Putting the switch emulation aside, would in you opinion make any sense picking an odin 2 pro over the rp5?
@ ah so for your rp4pro you didn’t have baldurs dark alliance
Are you using ES-DE for the launcher? 👀👀
I am! It’s my favorite launcher at the moment.
@ 🫡💯
Been considering the rp5 or rpMini. Currently have rp4pro & rgCube…this video helps tremendously. Thanks 😊
@@jqwearyFWIW, the RP5 brings me more joy than the RP Mini, personally.
What about RP Mini and RP5 any noticeable difference?
The main differences are 2gb more ram in the 5 and Android 13 instead of 10 but I think in practice they’re going to be pretty similar as they have the same chip.
Thats good to know. The 4 pro is more affordable so thats great news!
Good topic, I like this. Can you compare the RG556 as well? I know some users are considering selling to get the quality screen and ergonomics we're used to but with better sticks and performance. Unclear how much better that performance really is yet though for what might be an extra $50-$70 plus shipping depending what how much you sell the RG556 for
I don’t currently have a 556 but will see if ii can get one.
@@bassderek thanks for even considering, appreciated
I've never actually played on nether. Is it still required that we patch aether to update it and get nether working? Thx
Also, is there an easy way to move our current apps on an android over to the rp5? Thx! 🙏
Yes, but there’s a script that will download and patch the Aether APK for you so it’s not too bad.
Guys..can i play geforce now on retroid pocket 5 or 4?
thank you this helps!
Glad I could help!
what frontend is that?
ES-DE
Does the retro pocket five come with mario games And games like that
It does not come with any games, no.
Just want to know if 4pro runs kirby games and pokemon well ? That is the max imma go with switch ! Need it more for gba and gamecube and 3ds which i feel shall work fine on rp4
Pokémon for switch might be hit and miss on the 4 pro not sure. I don’t have it in hand right now, sorry!
Great comparison. I'm not a fan of the rp4 and my thoughts are that if it needs a grip to be comfortable to use, the grip may as well be part of the device and so I'm on team rp5
Yeah I’m usually not a huge fan of adding grips. To be fair the RP5 still has room for ergonomic improvement when using both sticks though.
@bassderek fair only so much can be done when the sticks are both at the bottom I guess
Excellent video, I ordered the new devicer. but I am confused whether it can run ps5 and Switch smoothly? I don't care about upgrading the resolution, the important thing is that the all games works ?
Bro ps5?
2nd switch games will work. Heavier ones won't.
@@harshrajjadhav940 sorry ps2
Switch is still very hit and miss, I wouldn’t buy it if that was your main purpose. PS2 runs just fine (PS5 most certainly does not run lol).
@ thanks.. sorry I meant ps2
what about PC games? I know, Android consoles are not the best for it, but i wanna know if can play some retro games like Vampire The Masquerade, Fable or Diablo II
It should be able to, Retro Tech Dad has a great video showcasing Winlator on the RP Mini (same chip).
Almost bought this, but ordered the Odin Pro instead as I mostly need a machine to get my daughter off my Steam Deck for playing Minecraft, and she prefers stick on top.
I think I'm going to wait for a RP5 Pro for now... I'm happy with my 4 Pro as it is.
I don't think there will be a 5 Pro, but a 6 in a year... probably. If you're happy with the 4 Pro, save the cash!
I though snapdragon chips run better in openGL?
Yeah I thought so too. But I checked and at least in dolphin, vulkan ran much faster. I actually re did some of the benches for the video because of that.
Do you need a PC to add games?
It helps, but you can download them using WiFi on the device.
@ so the pocket four and five you can download off of Wi-Fi
NBA street vol 2 is critical Derek
Duly noted 🫡
Like my rp4 pro ,wont change for a while yet it does ps2 and Game Cube really well
Keep on Keepin' On!
I got my rp4 pro back in august right before rp5 and mini was announced-
It’s still a good handheld!
@bassderek true I only use it for ps1 and PS2 rn and I kinda dip in some vita and 3ds emulation. Outside of some graphical error with mkdd dolphin runs okayish?
Nice compare
I am very tempted to grab a 5 but there are some big handhelds coming out soon that I'd rather have. The Ayaneo 3 and my Evo that should be shipping eventually. If i grab another android handheld it will likely be an Ayaneo Pocket Micro.
I hear ya, I have an evo and Odin 2 portal both on order and will keep whichever I like better. I guess I’ll see if the 5.5” is enough or the 7” is worth it.
The Snapdragon chip needs to be 888 or higher to achieve a stable 60 frames. That's why I'm looking forward to the Retroid Pocket 6 with the 888 chip.
For what, switch? It really depends on the game. The 865 is plenty for 60fps on GameCube and ps2 for most games.
It was one year between the 4 and 5, presumably another year til the next. Could be worse… could be anbernic haha.
@@bassderek pretty sure the RP4 Pro was like 3-4 months ago, no?
@@dadou193RP4 Pro Pre Orders went live in December. So 9 months between.
Out run 2006 is a very difficult game to emulate on every single version released.
I’ll make a note for future tests!
I picked up a new in box pocket 4 pro for $140 on fb marketplace today, I was debating getting the pocket 5 but since I already have an odin 2 portal pre-ordered I felt that the price difference was too large for me to justify the rp5 over the deal I got on the 4 pro.
The portal will be even more capable so not a bad combo! Good price on the RP4.
@ I figured the perfect combo of having a more portable device and a powerhouse for more at home use!
I guess I'm going to stick with the 4 pro since I've been using it mainly for the ps2 anyways.
For sure, if you are happy with the device size and screen, no big reason to upgrade.
[5.5" 1080p OLED] vs [4.7" 1334x750 IPS] If you don't have either, the screen alone makes it worth paying the extra $35
For someone who doesn't already have a handheld in this size class, yeah at new price I'd definitely say go RP5.
You answered my question with Gran turismo 4 it was laggy on the 4 pro and i see its not any better on the 5 i wont be upgrading how ever the 5 looks amazing along with the screen
The screen is definitely the best feature
People should be aware for switch emulation the retroid pocket 5 is better because you can change the gpu drivers to “turnip drivers” this makes games like breath of the wild playable and fixes major graphical bugs.
I had mixed results in my testing with turnip, but will need to dive deeper once I get my retail rp5.
Game does play and at a good speed.

that screen on the 5!
Yeah, my thoughts. Might be the best screen in a handheld I’ve used yet (that’s under 7” anyway).
Yeah I’m gonna get the RP5 regardless
My PC can't even get a stable 30fps on 5x with GameCube 😭
I already have a Steamdeck and the RP4 Pro so I won't be buying the RP5. The size of the RP4 Pro is perfect and if I need more power I use the Steamdeck.
Good plan!
Same. I rarely use my rp4p anyway
It'd be nice if they would actually ship the RP5 to the rest of us already, I'm sick of waiting.
Shipments started today, I just got notice for my retail unit.
not much of a leap for an rp4p owner with the systems I want to play and with the anbernic RG/T820-ish prices makes it more enticing that it can push such numbers all the while fitting in my pocket but snapdragon just might be a better move longterm(?)
Maybe wait for a device with 8g2 if you want something more powerful longer term? But who knows if we will ever see a $220 device with that chip.
I'm doomed.
There will always be something new…
please if you can check burnout 3 on the ps2 because its a really hard to run game and a comparison will mean a lot! thanks for the vicdeo :)
Pretty sure it runs at least at 2x, but I don't have an RP5 in hand at the moment. My retail unit will get delivered in the next week or so.
There's a store over here in Puerto Rico selling the 3 for 200 😂 🤦🤦🤦
Ah, yeah prices outside of US can be crazy 🙀
5:49 the size difference is very noticeable
Definitely a nice screen area gain despite not being too much larger of a device.
Looks a bit biased towards the 5. You want it to be so much better yet it clearly disappoints.
I’m not sure how it disappoints? It can exceed the device resolution with the exception of some PS2, which still runs at a crisp enough resolution. Maybe I am biased because of the screen, but the screen is wayyyyyyy better.
I think they upset a lot of people with the 3 and 3 plus, I don’t think there will be a pro version.
If more people watched this video, maybe they'd stop saying that the RP4P performs better.
Are people saying that?
@@bassderek When it was first announced, many people were comparing specs and stating the 5 was weaker than the 4P and wouldn't play PS2 or GC nearly as well.
@@christophergarcia6064wasn’t that because they announced it with 6GB of ram initially
Actually, No. everything is almost the same EXCEPT that the Dimensity 1100 have 55% Higher GPU score in GeekBench 6 and 11% in 3DMark Wilf Life performance.
Dimensity 1100 is using Valhall 1st gen with 850 MHz GPU frequency with 9 pipelines
VS
SD865 is using Adreno 600 587 MHz GPU frequency only with 2 pipelines.
why is every retro handheld reviewers deliberately exclude this information... like they are paid or sponsored for....
Wait... cause they are....
I can tell you that I paid for this Rp4p with my own money, I’ve preordered an Rp5 with my own money. Do you think I somehow altered the tests in my video? This is real life, I tested them and gave each device the best settings to perform. I don’t care if you keep or buy an RP4P instead.
