When I first got this plane I made the typical mistake, I treated it like a I-15. I soon released once a decent pilot got behind me it was all over, even with proper throttle and flap use, there was very little chance that I could throw off a plane off my tail. Another thing that I noticed in this video is that you would engage the plane at a much closer distance than I would, I usually before watching this would engage planes at .90 KM which would work fine in tier one battles, but once I got into tier two, it wouldn’t work. So I thank you for this video.
To be fair, I tend to engage at close range in most planes, because my aim is simply not the best and shooting at long range is just a waste of ammo most of the time ;)
@long6hot great video yet again, m8! Can't get enough of your videos! I'm getting better with Russian aircraft thanks to your tutorials, however, have you ever thought of making another one of your great tutorial vids concentrating yet again and expanding upon the defensive flying tutorial you made? I really am too agro and it's getting me killed too often for my liking... Hell, I was used to getting an even k/d ratio, but after your tactics I've been moving up from 1:1 to 2:1 and now about 2.5:1 and almost 3:1 in my favor! Still at level 8 though as I rarely have time to fly! See ya around, m8!
I always loved this plane, but never knew how well the ground target ammo worked on aircraft. With the ordinary 3.15 (NOT the BK) actually having been lowered to a BR of 1.7, it is now just about the most monstrous sealclubber I know. I just had a game of 7 kills and 0 deaths - and if you remember my old videos, you know what a terrible pilot I am. Brought a lineup of 5 BR 1.7 planes, and this was the only one I even got to use! xD
its up there, though id say the 112 a-0 with HE or either lagg @ BR 2.0 are better if you're into that sort of thing. Youre facing the same planes as your overall br is 1.7 anyway, provided you throw in a 1 or 1.3 and 1.7. they both will kill faster and the a-0 can make an extra pass if you miss or turn fight certain planes if need be. with that said id rather go in those games and just lagg/hurricane/p36/mig/chaika/bomber hunt. Tho i guess you could just use that mig with 1.3 and 1.0 and really go barrel shooting. kind of annoying, sometimes its either that or deal with people 1 + br above you, a real be the ass or be assed scenario lol.
***** Yeah, those are alle awesome planes - cannons rip planes apart at those low battle ratings. (Although as Long5hot pointed out, hit detection can be a pain in the He112 a-0).
Icehair's Game Experiments - yeah it can be a bit wtf with any of the one cannon planes. its usually very easy though you do have to aim a bit better with the slower rof. well theres always the hurricane lol, cant go wrong with any of them at that level. right now im looking at the almost unlocked hurri mk ii and wondering why the hell i didnt go for the spit. must have been a.d.d and that stupid after game pick next research that they added which would be fine if it wasnt forced.
Good luck! Remember this video is pretty old now, I'm not sure if the plane still behaves the same way. Its definitely not a turnfighter though, so using it as an interceptor would still be the right approach.
I have been flying Russians for the first time now, deliberately to get the Mig-3, since it is said to be the only Russian aircraft that demands skill and tactics from its pilots. I wanted to have one Russian aircraft to get the "x2" bonus with, which wouldn't make me ashamed of flying it. I also flew a lot of Arcade for the first time and I really was shocked about how OP and how easy to fly Russian aircraft are. I suck as a pilot, but in my very first AB in a I-15 I easily shot down 6 guys without getting killed myself and that trend continued for the whole day. I did nothing different than I had done in other nation's Reserve planes and yet I dominated the games I was in and earned "Terror of the Sky" and a lot of other rewards pretty much in every game I joined. Believe me, I'm not bragging, it was all the planes and not my skills. You really can be a bad pilot and still do very good in Russians. It is disgusting. No surprise it took me less than a day to unlock the first two Mig-3 (besides the first two I-16, which I didn't really want, but needed to get to the Mig-3), almost get the last Mig-3 and upgrade pretty much every aircraft I had used to completion. Try that in any other nation's Reserve planes. I'm disappointed in a weird way by it, because it is too good. I still feel like I'm clubbing seals in it, especially in Realistic Battles. I really don't understand how people can be bad in it. It is a fucking Fw 190 A-5 with a Battle Rating of 2.0!!! Anyone who is used to flying stuff like the Fw 190 and the Bf 109 can easily be good in it, because it flies like a mix of the two. It climbs like the best 109 and dives like a 190, doesn't overheat and the fire power seems to be just as good as on any tier 3 plane, even better than the firepower of the 190 A-1, which has a BR of 3.3 and about 3 times the repair costs and can't do anything better than the Mig-3. It doesn't even rip wings as fast as the La-5. After flying Russians myself now, there is no doubt left in my mind that this game is rigged in favor of them, heavily and shamelessly rigged. I want to retroactively slap everyone in the face who has claimed otherwise and called me a crybaby since I play this game and have been complaining about Russian bias. Now I know for sure they either had no idea what they were talking about or they were seal clubbing cheaters who couldn't admit to being cheaters.
The Russians obviously get a break with respect to reserve and Rank I planes. After that I'm not so sure. Maybe Gaijin wanted their countrymen to get sucked into the game by making the first few tiers easier ;)
Icehair's Game Experiments Perhaps, but the BR on Russian planes are too low all the way up to tier 4. When you fly tier 2 Germans, it isn't seldom to encounter La-7 and other tier 4 Russians in Realistic Battles. I just flew a Realistic Battle in the Mig-3 in which the Russian team was almost all Mig-3 and the American team was almost all Peashooters. I didn't score one hit in this game because the whole American team was dead in the time I needed to get down into the action from 5500m. Seal Clubbing is built into this game and especially favoring the Russian faction. It is repulsive. This goes beyond wanting to attract Russian players, this is Russian nationalism coded into the game and the BR problems aren't the only thing. I have been flying a lot of German ground attackers and I am absolutely sure that Russian AAA is better than the AAA of other nations. I have been shot down at least 10 times as often by Russian AAA than by any other and I have seen Russian aircraft just loitering around over German airfields with impunity for minutes. Russian AAA doesn't just hit better than others, it also hits harder. When hit by American, British or German AAA, you get damaged a bit and can decide to get out of there. One hit from a Russian AAA usually rips my plane in two.
I think he means that those planes should have a much higher BR than they do, so you shouldn't be running into them while flying significantly weaker planes. The whole BR system is totally borked, has been ever since they adopted the ridiculous skill-based method of adjusting it.
novocas7rian And for the rank 1 Russian planes, I agree - the MiG 3-15's new BR of 1.7 being a case in point. What I am questioning is his evidence for higher rank planes. His example was tier 2 Germans facing the La-7, which has a BR of 4.7 according to my research screen. I don't play tier 4, but I do know good rank 2 German fighters typically have a BR of about 3.3, which means the La-7 is not only two ranks higher, but also has a battle rating 1.4 above those Germans. That kind of insane matchmaking might be evidence that the MM is broken, but not that the tier 4 Russian fighters have a too low BR.
It definitely depends on the plane and situation, but use your throttle, if you are that desperate- try and bleed off as much speed as quickly as possible by turning your engine off, using max flaps, and flailing around, if you get an overshoot there are multiple different recovery tactics you can try there on out.
I haven't yet flown many russian planes (I use the lower tier russian ground attack aircraft way more than I should... considering ive got to the T4 IL-10 using just Russian T1 planes....). But Anyone who turn fights in a Mig-3-15 is doing it so wrong, I think nearly every plane can out turn this thing at slow speeds, which seems to be where people go wrong with so many of the Russian planes (they are interceptors/altitude fighters, not dogfighters), but at the same time many people seem to think that the ground attack aircraft such as the Su-2 aren't agile, when in reality they definitely are... bit of a nasty suprise for them when they get shot down.
I use the hammerhead technique, but every single plane I use it on even if it's a starter plane, catch up to me no matter how high I am or how far away I am. I got shot down by a american starter plane, because he wouldn't stall, and he kept at me and he kept getting closer.
You need to be at a higher speed in order to do the hammerhead effectively, or else you will actually stall first if your speed is a lot lower. Also, some planes (like the I-153) have ridiculously low stall speeds.
The constant lowering of BR on Russian fighters to by now ridiculously low levels and a few other things have made me a pretty bitter Russian hater in this game. I don't even want to fly the German Premium La-5 anymore because to me flying Russians is one small step removed from cheating at this point. At least in RB, don't have much experience with AB. However, the Mig-3 is the only Russian plane I would like to fly, exactly because it is the only Russian plane that is not easy to fly and that requires some strategy and tactics. I suspect it is the only Russian plane that would give me the feeling of actually having earned the kills I get with it. On the other hand... when you meet Gladiators and stuff like that in it, it will just be another seal clubbing machine, even if it is harder to fly than all those other Russian noob crutches.
In arcade at least, the Gladiator is far more likely to win that contest simply because most Mig-3s are flown low & slow. Its a sad state of affairs in Arcade now - the Yer/B17 spam that dominates tier 4 resulted in fighter pilots not bothering to climb & instead spending the whole battle in a meaningless low altitude furball. Since 1.39 that's spread to tier 3 and then tier 2. No-one climbs anymore in most battles, whereas previously altitude supremacy was hotly contested for most of the game.
It's not so much the russian planes which are OP, imho the most serious problem are their weapons. Afaict they all shoot depleted uranium rods covered in white phosphor. Worst offender is the 23mm, which will turn any surface red/ black instantly. Because of these ridiculous guns I refuse to keep flying my russians. In fact they are my prime target and I will not help a russian friendly in distress. Sue me.
These tactics still work today. The MiG-3 BK flies like a Bf-109 but hits like a P-40 and I'm loving it.
When I first got this plane I made the typical mistake, I treated it like a I-15. @@long5hot Do you still play warthunder?
Occasionally, but rarely
I'm new to War Thunder and have just acquired the 2 MiG-3-15's. Thanks for posting this video; it has really opened my eyes.
Such an old (and a bit obsolete video) but still a great video to watch! Nice flying Andrew!
Just beat my personal record of 13 kills after binge watching your videos,Thanks for all your hard work
yes long 5hot you are correct my friend I quickly found this out the hard way, great video
Need Longshot back.

Another great video...I enjoy revisiting planes that you feature and getting more out of them.
Is it too loggy for a snaproll?
No it actually snaprolls pretty well, its just that I was never in a situation of having to avoid an unwanted head-on in order to demonstrate it.
Where did you go?

This is how I exactly use the mig 3
what cannons does it have? I only heard you mention 12.7 and 7mm mgs at the start
+eatthisvr6 That's all it has. The MiG-3-34 has cannons.
Thank You! Now i know how to play in this plane!
Good luck! Remember this video is pretty old now, I'm not sure if the plane still behaves the same way. Its definitely not a turnfighter though, so using it as an interceptor would still be the right approach.
long5hot Attacking bombers and doing "boom & zoom" is the best tactic for this plane
this guide help a lot. though i know i should play like eagle hunt prey but tailing enemy is tempting indeed -_-

Should I play the regular 3-15 the same way?
Definitely. And the 3-34 as well - but its cannon obviously make it the most effective MiG-3 in the game. I have no idea why its BR is only 2.3.
Does this all apply to the MiG-3-15 as well?
oh nevermind someone already asked it lol
You sound like Jango Fett from Star Wars. Just thought I'd let you know haha.

HOW DO YOU TURN. I see every single other person on the server turn with the plane like it has 0 seconds for turn time.
The best thing I can suggest is watching my Beginner's Guide series - th-cam.com/play/PLuSIUQRYEJmIdv6uh3YD4hp3KIld8w_Zg.html
