@@sebastiangi5260 ¡Hola Sebastián!.. El Ferro Carril Oeste fué la primer empresa ferroviaria de la argentina, comenzando a rodar en Agosto de 1857. En ese entonces la Real Academia Española no había fijado reglas para la escritura. Camino de fierro, camino de hierro, y Ferro Carril eran acepciones perfectamente válidas. Y así quedó a lo largo de su historia. Todas los registros oficiales del Oeste ( 50° anversario, 75° aniversario, libros de registro, planchas de acciones de bolsa etc ), siguieron manteniendo la grafía originaria, lo que no se dió en ninguna de las empresas ferroviarias posteriores. El club por lógica mantuvo ese criterio histórico, aunque a veces se puede ver escrito todo junto "Ferrocarril". Tambien remite al escudo del club que mantiene las siglas F C O en gótico.
Cuentan los viejos socios del club que hubo un partido de fútbol entre obreros irlandeses y administrativos ingleses para dirimir si quedaban los colores del Aston Villa o el Verde Irlanda. Ganaron los obreros pero no hay registros y puede ser una leyenda aunque muy factible...

The Kavanagh building, Velez Sarsfield, Guillermo Brown, The Fahy Club, Barrio Coughlan, San Antonio de Areco a village full of Irish names and ancestors, even Che Guevara Lynch or the two Argentinian rugby players Santiago Phelan and Augustine Creevy. Buenos Aires’s oldest newspaper The Southern Cross, all Irish!!!

¡Caballito! Yo nací en Caballito, frente a Plaza Irlanda. Y viví en el barrio hasta 2001. Ferro es un montón de recuerdos hermosos. Un club con una función social importantísima. Los cumpleaños de mis compañeros se festejaban allí en el gimnasio del club. Así que era normal que vayamos un par de veces por mes. Y tengo una anécdota con el club, donde se practicaban muchos deportes y promovían a los chicos a competir en todas las categorías. Resulta que un sábado de 1980 más o menos, otoño, un día soleado, mi hermano, que todavía estaba en la primaria, estaba en Ferro en el cumpleaños de uno de sus compañeros. Con mi tío lo fuimos a buscar y como cuando llegamos el cumpleaños todavía no había terminado, nos quedamos dando vueltas por el club. En la cancha principal se jugaba un partido oficial, Ferro vs. Argentinos Juniors. Muy poca gente, digamos que había más gente en la cancha que en las tribunas. Así que nos invitaron a pasar, como era usual en el club. Mi tío me dice: "¿Ferro juega contra Argentinos Juniors? Vamos a verlo, que en Argentinos juega un pibe que es una maravilla: se llama Diego Maradona..." Entonces entramos a la platea y estábamos mirando el partido. No era un gran espectáculo y mi tío no sabía individualizar a Diego, así que cuando pasó una persona que era del club, le preguntó: "¿Dígame una cosa, no sabe si está jugando Maradona?". El tipo le contestó: "No, Maradona está lesionado y hoy no juega, pero si lo quiere conocer, allí está...-" y dos o tres filas detrás de donde estábamos sentados, estaba sentado un Diego muy joven, con un par de personas más. Lo saludamos, charlamos con él y cuando terminó el partido, nos despedimos. Quién hubiera pensado que seis años después nos iba a dar semejante alegría inolvidable. Y todo gracias a Ferro.

My Elementary School, in argentina, was SAINT PATRICK in Adrogue Buenos Aires Province. Even the name is link with the most prominent Saint of that Nation, our Director was Mrs. Rogers a brithsh old lady, and there were teachers Scotish or Irish as well. At that young age we really dont have a clue about political issues and didnt make a distintion of them. Except for the innecesary an inopportune war with England we use to be in good relations with both Nations, but, our most recognice Naval hero and founder of our NAVY is an Irish descendant ALMIRANTE GUILLERMO BROWN / Sorry but I am an ATALANTA supporter 🙂

Soy de La Plata, vivi en Almagro, y pase mil veces por la cancha de Ferro. Actualmente vivo en irlanda, y es una historia hermosa, otra coincidencia historica entre Argentina e Irlanda.

I grew up in Caballito and the club used to be first division….then I went abroad to study and lost touch, was shocked to learn they had descended not one but two divisions. But now they are back in the second, and we have given our champions national team Acuña. Hopefully better days ahead. But beyond football, it is a real social club, you could go to the pool, gym, etc, play lots of other sports or just hang out.
Brilliant video, i used to watch highlights of Argentinian football when i was a kid on tv in Ireland. I always liked Ferro because of the green shirt but never knew the connection with Ireland.
@@MrLaizard Both those clubs were founded by the English community in Argentina. I'm sure the Irish and Scottish communities were also involved to an extent - as they all mixed, but the clubs roots are English.
Ferro was a powerfull club in the 80's. In other times, where now there are 2 towers, behind of stadium, there was 2 silo. "Caballito" means " little horse". In this Stadium, a lot of bands played like the cure, iron maiden, ozzy, David Bowie and others.

In echange for your trivia, here's mine: during the early days of the disastrous Malvinas campaign in 1982, our Junta sent a guy with excellent English to be the new Chief of Police. This Argie guy's name was Douglas Patrick Dowling, he was of Irish descent and hated the Brits with all his guts. He was a Major in the Argentinian Army (and was accused of torture by political prisoners) and the nightmare of the kelpers (who are even more loyalists than the orangemen up in Ulster). He had to be sent back to the continent after a month because he had immediately alienated himself all of the Scots-descended occupiers of Malvinas. I've been living 15+ years in the neighborhood and never made the connection between the green color and the Irish (however obvious) Due to the Malvinas war, any part of our history told to us as kids, that would put the UK in a positiive light was made pretend not to have happened, which is absurd! The trains were a huge part of the growth in Argentina's golden years, and at the same time it's been treated with such disregard that there's never been explicit mention of the *irish* working on said trains... you have "el barrio inglés" and "los ingleses del ferrocarril" but nothing of the irish. My, what an eye opener. It would be so great to get the trains rollling again as in our prime... Again, great video!
Even though Ferro is not playing in the first division these days, its legacy in Argentina's football culture is very prominent, especially in Buenos Aires city. Take a walk in the “English town”, a very unique set of blocks still showing picturesque English architecture houses.

Con mi tío lo fuimos a buscar y como cuando llegamos el cumpleaños todavía no había terminado, nos quedamos dando vueltas por el club. En la cancha principal se jugaba un partido oficial, Ferro vs. Argentinos Juniors. Muy poca gente, digamos que había más gente en la cancha que en las tribunas. Así que nos invitaron a pasar, como era usual en el club. Mi tío me dice: "¿Ferro juega contra Argentinos Juniors? Vamos a verlo, que en Argentinos juega un pibe que es una maravilla: se llama Diego Maradona..." Entonces entramos a la platea y estábamos mirando el partido. No era un gran espectáculo y mi tío no sabía individualizar a Diego, así que cuando pasó una persona que era del club, le preguntó: "¿Dígame una cosa, no sabe si está jugando Maradona?". El tipo le contestó: "No, Maradona está lesionado y hoy no juega, pero si lo quiere conocer, allí está...-" y dos o tres filas detrás de donde estábamos sentados, estaba sentado un Diego muy joven, con un par de personas más. Lo saludamos, charlamos con él y cuando terminó el partido, nos despedimos. Quién hubiera pensado que seis años después nos iba a dar semejante alegría inolvidable. Y todo gracias a Ferro.

Even the name is link with the most prominent Saint of that Nation, our Director was Mrs. Rogers a brithsh old lady, and there were teachers Scotish or Irish as well. At that young age we really dont have a clue about political issues and didnt make a distintion of them. Except for the innecesary an inopportune war with England we use to be in good relations with both Nations, but, our most recognice Naval hero and founder of our NAVY is an Irish descendant ALMIRANTE GUILLERMO BROWN / Sorry but I am an ATALANTA supporter 🙂

Soy de La Plata, vivi en Almagro, y pase mil veces por la cancha de Ferro. Actualmente vivo en irlanda, y es una historia hermosa, otra coincidencia historica entre Argentina e Irlanda.

I grew up in Caballito and the club used to be first division….then I went abroad to study and lost touch, was shocked to learn they had descended not one but two divisions. But now they are back in the second, and we have given our champions national team Acuña. Hopefully better days ahead. But beyond football, it is a real social club, you could go to the pool, gym, etc, play lots of other sports or just hang out.

@@MrLaizard Both those clubs were founded by the English community in Argentina. I'm sure the Irish and Scottish communities were also involved to an extent - as they all mixed, but the clubs roots are English.

"Caballito" means " little horse".
In this Stadium, a lot of bands played like the cure, iron maiden, ozzy, David Bowie and others.

Yes, I believe the Irish in large numbers came to Argentina to build canals/waterways down from the Andes in the eighteenth century.

In echange for your trivia, here's mine: during the early days of the disastrous Malvinas campaign in 1982, our Junta sent a guy with excellent English to be the new Chief of Police. This Argie guy's name was Douglas Patrick Dowling, he was of Irish descent and hated the Brits with all his guts. He was a Major in the Argentinian Army (and was accused of torture by political prisoners) and the nightmare of the kelpers (who are even more loyalists than the orangemen up in Ulster). He had to be sent back to the continent after a month because he had immediately alienated himself all of the Scots-descended occupiers of Malvinas. Another bit of trivia is about another Irish-descended Argentinian Army conscript, Ronald Quinn, who acted as interpreter (there were some more Irish-descended conscripts, not out of any special plan or anything but just sheer coincidence, and there were also some English-descended Argentinian conscripts, mind you). I've always wondered if this Quinn had anything to do with a Quinn family from ireland who were neighbours to my father when he was a kid in Buenos Aires in the 50s and 60s.

I spent some time in Panama. When I was asked where I was from I’d just go with the flow and say Irlanda. I was always asked Irlanda del Norte o Irlanda del Sur.
I was also asked were there leprechauns in Ireland.

Due to the Malvinas war, any part of our history told to us as kids, that would put the UK in a positiive light was made pretend not to have happened, which is absurd! The trains were a huge part of the growth in Argentina's golden years, and at the same time it's been treated with such disregard that there's never been explicit mention of the *irish* working on said trains... you have "el barrio inglés" and "los ingleses del ferrocarril" but nothing of the irish. My, what an eye opener.
It would be so great to get the trains rollling again as in our prime...

Even though Ferro is not playing in the first division these days, its legacy in Argentina's football culture is very prominent, especially in Buenos Aires city. Take a walk in the “English town”, a very unique set of blocks still showing picturesque English architecture houses.

I'm from that barrio. I now live in the States, but go "home" every year. I live a block away from Plaza Irlanda (Irish Park) and Saint Bridget School and Father Dillon schools. Both huge castle like private schools. After the Spanish and Italians, the Irish are the third largest minority in the country. Even Che Guevara has Irish descent

También el barrio tiene historia de irlandeses. El colegio Santa Brígida y la famosa Plaza Irlanda entre otros lugares irlandeses!
