Thanks for the incredible journey. Now I understand how Crumb traded one sketchbook for his estate in France. Every page is priceless. Reminds of the anecdote about Picasso drawing a sketch in exchange for a meal. As a he was walking out the door, the restaurant owner called him back: Monsieur Picasso, you forgot to sign! - Of course, he replied, I bought the meal, not the whole restaurant!
I really recommend some of the later Collected Crumb books that Fantagraphics puts out. I like Crumb’s sketchbook and social criticism stuff, but for me, his best works are his essays on various topics of interest to him. The ones on Charlie Patton, Jellyroll Morton and Philip K Dick in particular come to mind.
I just recently picked up this last volume to complete the set myself. I find it interesting that it takes me longer to “read” these sketchbooks than one his stories. But I do argue it does appear to be the drawings of an older man - many musings on death and mortality.
Just discovered your great channel. Much has been said about this great artist. What can I add? Thank you for sharing. Oh yeah I used the same bookmarks as you but I found these small magnetic bookmarks that work super fine. Thanks again for your work.
Well, I shouldn’t been seeing this. It’s the only book of this collection that’s still shrink wrapped. And yes, I’m hoping for a next volume from Mr Crumb 🤞
I wonder if by this time he knew all his sketches would wind up in a book…and if that shapes his approach in the amount of detail and finish he puts into them…
So jealous you have volume 4. Incidentally, fans of R. Crumb might enjoy my TH-cam show CANONICALLY CRUMB, where I explore the comix and characters of the Crummy-verse.
I would make the argument that his sketchbooks are more important that his actual comics work. I can’t pin down why I think this exactly, but it may have something to do with availability. I seem to remember the softcovers from Fantagraphics being available at shops in my area but it was harder to come by their Complete Crumb Comics line. I recently got my copy of the last volume as well.
his sketchbooks are as least as important as his comics ... to take availability as a proof is a bit risky, because for a long time the old hardcover sketchbooks by zweitausendeins were among the rarest, at least most expensive books on the market... which was maybe a reason for taschen to put out the new edition.
ahh, don't plan to make a video about these, thanks for your question.... but these contain a wild mish-mash of doodles, ripped out articles, photographs and private stuff
I don't know if you are an Alex Nino fan. But he has a new Graphic Novel called Alandal that (for some reason) is only available in the Philippines right now. I figured it would be something you might want to look into.
Zladislav bersinski is an other artist who has just a remarkable amount of incredible work for one life. You either have that in you or you dont. I can go a year without painting. I just dont have it in me enough
I did not know Zladislav Bersinski ... what a dark enticing imagery he created, trippy H.R.Giger with some "eastern influences" for the lack of a better description (and knowledge). Thank you!
You are welcome. He is well worth studying more on. A facinating painter with such an insane end to his life. My no 2 favourite after vermeer@@earlgrey862
I'm a Crumb fan, and I know now he lives in France. He is certainly is no of politically or religious correctness, from which ever direction. I would like to manifest this now, especially since he's an old man and has nothing to lose. Aim his dark sardonic satire at the prophet Muhammed. Draw a satirical series about his life and his followers. Hell, even keep it a secret until he shuffles off to Buffalo. Then publish them far and wide. Put them on the net, make t-shirts, whatever. It needs to be done.
hmm, I don't know why esp. Crumb of all cartoonists should do a satire about any religion ... even his illustrated bible is quite a literal adaptation... as far as I've heard. I don't own this one because it's the only book by him that didn't interest me at all. And if you would like my personal opinion: doing a satire about any kind of religion is usually just lame, because it is too easy... just let the people believe what they want & ignore them.
Crumb is the most consistent artist of all time. The size of his work is phenomenal. He is one of my favorite artists
Thank you so much. I really enjoyed your narration and your observations on this most incredible artist. Crumb's work amazes and delights me.
The label "cartoonist" doesn't do him justice. The amount of detail in his drawings is incredible. What an amazing artist. The faces are so lifelike.
Hope to get my hands on these one day

good old Pablo :)
Exceptional. Thanks for the flip through.

I agree... not to forget the one about richard von krafft-ebing
RIP Aline. Just got their latest comic yesterday.

... that's maybe why it has some extra-appeal for yours truely geezer right here :P
Amazing stuff!
Nice thoughtful commentary!

better later than never... you're welcome

Probably literally and not an opinion butbthe greatest ever to do this style 😮

there's definitely sth to it... he said that his house in France was paid with the sketchbook-deal (I guess the one with Zweitausendeins) back then
That's like asking if all Frank Zappa's recordings will all be available to be on line/ recorded for shlubb's to hear. The answer is 'no'.

subbed :)
R.I.P., Aline Kominsky-Crumb… She recently passed on Nov. 29, 2022.
my sincerest condolences to robert.

Earl Grey sketch books coming up?

At least $50.00 per book and the volumes go up to 12 by now.
Is that the edition with the limited ''Little guy living inside my head'' print?
no

oh... he must be really old by now, thanks for the info
very cool!
Where did you order these from? Can’t seem to get them anywhere!
probably through Taschen directly, but can't remember... and yes, it's possible that they've gotten out of stock at least some of them.

Just while watching your video, I realised that lots of his art is sort of influenced by Basil Wolverton.

I've seen a documentary ages ago... can't remember the title but it was pretty interesting
