    Many of Crumb's sketchbooks were actually such school notebooks with lined paper. When photographed for reproduction, they can optically erase those lines. Many or most of Crumb's early sketch books probably were such lined notebooks.

    His sketchbooks had much of his best artwork, this is all gold. I can do some lettering, but not like he can

    Many people do not know that before Warhol was a pop art painter he was a wildly, successful New York illustrator. Bonwit Teller comes to mind. Shoes, purses, stuff like that. Full page ads in the New York Times.

    R.Crumb aka the 80yr old walking legend of all things creatively sick and twisted to the ultimate degree. I have so much love and respect for this great man.

    Enjoyed watching this. I read that some of the founding cartoonists at Mad magazine influenced Crumbs drawing style.

    R.Crumb helped me realize my type. Tall Amazonian women.

    If it's cartoon like or more realistic his faces have so much personality like you know how this person would sound move and think. There is always this sense of the strange even things like shoes even. Very courageous in his situations too, places most people would not go especially for the times.

    Much of his sketchbooks were drawn with Rapidograph pens...then and even now. He has used dip pens and brush, but technical pens seems to be his most typical tool. Probably because they are convenient and can use permanent ink.

    Crumb from what I've seen does both. He draws with no underline drawing when sketching. But for comics and finished drawings he'll bust out the pencils. In fact In the DVD commentary of zwigoff and ebert they mention how he has no underdrawing when they see him draw.

      Oh really? Interesting. I wasn't sure because sometimes his art looks like it was done on a fly, and other times it looks very thought out and planned. Thanks for the comment and the view! I appreciate it.

    Viz, the British comic which gained popularity in the 1980s owes a lot to Crumb.
    Particularly some of the smutty drawings of females.

      Alan Moore supposedly had an interest in Angelfood McSpade when he first encountered Crumb's Comix back in the 1960's over in Britain,
      and Moore's early art from his Maxwell the Magic Cat era in the 1980's had a definite Crumb influence to it.

    Very cool. I can relate to starting a channel. I started mine a year and a half ago, and six moths ago I started a dedicated R. Crumb show called CANONICALLY CRUMB where I explore the comix and characters of the Crummy-verse. Check it out! I look forward to more art books (I often look for vids like this before making purchases.)

      Thanks for watching! I will definitely check out your Crumb videos and your channel as a whole. I adore Crumbs work due to the fact that he is al unique and has a style like no other. Not to mention he is loved by so many cartoonists that came after him.

    I'm not a Robert Crumb fan at all, in any way. Sorry to those who like him, but I think he's a lowlife at best, and that's being kind. But his artistic technique is interesting. It's not really very good at all, which makes it amazing how he still gets his point across, and being able to do this with poor art is what makes his work worth studying.

    • @robertcook2680
      @robertcook2680 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      What do you mean by "lowlife?" You can say his drawing doesn't appeal to you, but to say his drawing is "not very good at all" is objectively wrong.
