Nice job on the bowl. I would say it is Teak. Often used on ships.
As to cracks, one can fill them with resin and then turn the bowl.
Peter Brown- ShopTime- (on TH-cam) has done some awesome bowls and such with resin filled cracks.

The bowel is truly fabulous! Watching the entire process of you developing it was, for me, captivating. Embellishing it with the brass nails makes it look medieval, which I love. But having the coins in it gave it a great finishing touch! That is an absolute jewel to have in your collection of artifacts from the Thames. And I'd like to add, demonstrating all of your great skills using different tools and materials to clean up and 're-cycle' or 'up-cycle' the items from the Thames, I think inspires many of us artists to take our creativity a step further. Love your videos Simon!

Si my love. I live my life vicariously thru you and Nicola, I used to (a few years ago) feel like I was discovering the most amazing arrowheads here in Mid America, making great discoveries of the past. If I lived in London I think you would see me on the Thames my every waking moment, guess I would have floaties and a wet suit. I love the history, the restorations, the repurposing, the retrieving of trash. Personally in this day and era anything thrown into the river, religious or not should have to be biodegradable, I said that when I was in Girl Scouts back in the 70s here in the US. I am not a tree hugger but I am very conscience of resources around us.
I am still amazed that the citidiots (my word for city idiots) can come out here to the rural areas and deplete 40 to 50 acres of all the hard words, the "finance" it through the bank, chop down all the trees for profit, then let the loan go back to the bank. It is criminal to me. We have nearly no Walnut left, and Black Walnut is on its way out also but these trees also keep our air clean.... citidiots are not people I like lol.
But back to that purple/red wood. Is it Purpleheart? The characteristics of Purpleheart vary so much per region, I am wondering if you could narrow down its origin if it is Purpleheart because it is absolutely beautiful! Where were the men like you when I was younger?? lol Adore spending time watching you Bill and Nicola. It is the greatest way to spend a cold cloudy day, becoming the only way.... Thank you for sharing your talents and love with us, I don't feel sometimes like you are just a YT Star but you are a friend... one of the better ones I have lol you don't argue and go along with everything I say lol. Merry Christmas My Mud lover!!!

The wood could be jarrah or purpleheart.
When you work any of those hard woods including oak and beech, wear a dust mask the dust is carcinogenic. Also cutting with the saw on the lathe like that could be very nasty if the blade snagged.
Brass and copper ship's nail could make nice jewellery, get a plumber's Mapp torch and silver solder.

I know it's an old video but had to click on it when I saw Australian pipe, what a beaut it is. Great work on the wooden bowl too

I agree completely with Sharon Doan...your bowl is lovely and the perfect backdrop for those historic coins. Thank you for sharing with us.

Still making my way through your older videos. The bowl you made is absolutely beautiful. What wonderful treasures you found on this outing, the Australian classy pipe and the glove button were my favorites. I find the bag seals interesting.

Ahhh, the balance point for a scale. Brilliant job creating the bowl. Sweet! The river had to be so cold giving that pipe a wash. Thanks Si. Always look forward to your post on Sunday.😁👍

It was cold - but the buzz of a find means i don't feel it!
