Although decimalisation was 1971 the 10p, 5p were introduced in 1968 and then the 50p in 1969 to run alongside the two bob (florin) and shilling- so we could get used to the fact that 10p was two shillings etc.Old people really worried about this changeover and would tell you their concerns. After decimalisation the shilling and two shilling coins were used for years while the sixpence was supposed to disappear but that stayed around for a while as a 2.5p coin. The ten shilling note was replaced entirely by the new 50p in 1969- which some people called the "Wilson" after Harold Wilson. The name being because the coin was "two-faced, and many sided." I have a Royal Mint set of new coins of the last 1967 minted pre-decimal coins in a plastic case that was given to me in 1968. It does not have a shilling present and states they were last minted in 1966 and the new issue of the decimal coins is also included in the case. There is no 50p as that had not been devised at that time. I trust your creation is going to be displayed at the Tate Modern- by the Thames itself!

@@Sifinds I worked in Stamford Street in 1980- just down from the Tate Modern- then the Bankside B Power Station. This was a purely "stand by" station and rarely worked but they would fire it up every now and again and big blobs of black stuff would come into our office- it was finally closed down in 1981! Anyway, I can't help thinking that plenty of great stuff must have been ripped out of the building when it was converted and these are probably items I might find more interesting than the exhibits inside the building now! Is this collection of bricks still there? www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/jonathanjonesblog/2016/sep/20/carl-andre-equivalent-viii-bricks

@@luanameyer6679 When Britain went decimal the plan was to keep the same £ as before. Everywhere else, it was decided- Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and many smaller nations, to make a new system based around 10 shillings- half a pound. A new name was used for these new decimal currencies- the dollar or Rand in these nations. Essentially it meant you had new names but the essential basic unit, the penny became a cent. In Britain, we had a " new penny" and there were now 100 of these to the £ whereas before there were 240 old pennies. This meant the New Penny was nearly 2.5 times more valuable (2.4 times to be exact) than the old penny- and this was a mistake and we should have had a New Pound- based on the old half pound- 10 shillings. One final thing, people think Britain's system was odd and quirky- and typically British. This is not the case- it was invented by Charlemagne and it was decided that 240 pennies should be minted from one pound of silver bullion and this was a pan-European currency- all pennies having the same bullion content.King Offa of Mercia- at the time one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdoms adopted the system and it eventually became standard across Britain and Ireland. Gradually, it disappeared across Europe but remained in the UK- just like driving on the left- the rule of the Roman Empire. It's not Britain being different- it is a case of Britain staying the same while other nations changed. All I can say is, in pre-decimal Britain where 12 pennies made a shilling and 20 shillings made a pound, everybody was good at mental arithmetic and knew their times tables! Nowadays, everybody needs a calculator! Another thing was that items would be priced in shillings way beyond the pound- you would seea price of 60 shillings. Then posh items were priced in guineas- which were 21 shillings and all these coins- like US coins still do, had names- the sixpence being called a Tanner. It is suggested Mr Tanner was the master of the Royal Mint hundreds of years ago!

Fun & interesting stuff guys, but I have to say it. i'm old enough to remember pre-decimalisation. Never never did I ever hear a coin called a Half Penny. It was a Ha'pny with a hard "a". I know it has "Half Penny" written on it, but it was never called that. A florin was a two bob bit a sixpence was a tanner or a sixpenny bit and a shilling was a bob. A two and six penny bit was a half crown or half a dollar (going back to when there were 4 dollars to the pound, happy days, thank you Harold Wilson for devaluing the pound).
