    I just bought a 2023 Grom its being assembled by the dealer this weekend. I am a new rider I bought it mainly because I have never driven standard and even after the 2 day safety course I took Im just not comfortable yet putting everything together. Seemed like a good option to get the basic feel of riding a bike. Can see your points about how when going up in size etc it will be a different experience and that the grom has speed limitations. The new grom has a large gear indicator on screen thats at least one plus 😁 cheers

    With a stock engine my 2020 Honda Grom kills 72 mph. But the first thing I did was change out that 15 tooth front sprocket too a 14 tooth. Before I could never hit the rev limiter. Now I can every time I’m on the interstate.
    Besides that I have a full Yoshi pipe, a power commander 5 plus a cam and charged the clutch springs. It’s a completely different animal now and it’s fun.
    What have you done to yours now? I’m kind of thinking of getting a big bore!

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it’s not made to be that kind of bike. It’s made to be a small fun city type bike that guys use off road and for stunt practice. People swear they hit low 70’s/high 60’s with just a tune, exhaust, cam, and air filter which all in only costs about 500 bucks. It’s definitely not designed to be ridden long distance on the highway and every state/country is different. But in Florida where I’m at it’s perfectly legal to take it on the highway if you wanted

    Do you think this is a good bike to buy to learn how to wheelie ?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no. Yes because it’s super cheap to fix any piece on it and it’s super cheap to buy in general. But no because it’s not good to learn to get it down on any other kind of bike if that makes sense. Because of the short super short wheelbase it’s way different. So you’ll get the fundamentals down probably but in my opinion if your goal is to learn on this and then take it to other bikes it’s going to be way different and you might as well just buy like a Fz07/mt07 and invest in crash protection

      It really depends on what style and height in my opinion. If you like sporty bikes an mt03 or mt07 is a cheap and nice option for naked bikes. Or like an r3 or similar 250/300cc sport bike. Some 650’s have modes to control throttle input & wheelies which would be a good option to grow with too. Cruisers can most all be tamed by new riders I believe and it really comes down to weight and how tall you are for confidence at stops.

      At first I was kind of pissed that the 2021 was announced like two weeks after I bought my 20 but after looking at the specs and everything I actually like the 20 better. I’m not sure how the gearing is going to be I know they have five years but I heard the top speed is the same. So you might be able to squeeze some extra felt torque out of the lower gears depending on how it’s geared. But the first two gears are really low anyway on the stock 20 grom. Might be able to snag a super cheap 19-20 in the next year or two. Also depends where you’re at because I know in the US the 2021 has not been confirmed to come here yet

    • @sixdsix5028
      @sixdsix5028 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RidinDad The reasons for my wanting a 21' are the bike's "projected" higher gas mileage and the addition of an oil filter instead of the spinner basket and filter screen. I like the convenience of swapping a filter vs taking the side case off. Granted the mileage can vary wildly based on rider weight, road conditions, weather conditions, riding styles, and altitude.
      The real trade off with the newer one is that it is a new engine design vs the fully tried and true old one. There is no telling the amount of issues that may come up, but Honda does know their way around engines, especially the small ones.

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I like many of the updates on the new 2021 Grom (5spd, instrument cluster, oil filter, improved mpg, higher compression, etc.), but feel they took a huge step in the wrong direction in styling. (Yours is way cooler) Also not excited about the obligatory Euro 5 emission chokeholds (but all that can be 'fixed'😉). I just bought a 2019 Grom, 4070 miles… I can say that getting into neutral from 1st at a stop…not easy to do. Coming to a stop…keep in 2nd, down shift to neutral just before you stop.

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t want to shift to neutral before I stop though. Could be dangerous. I always stay in gear at a light for a while until several cars are behind me stopped at least. Never know when you’ll have to avoid an intersection mess!

    All the videos poo poo grom being first bike. I wholeheartedly disagree. It has decent resale if you outgrow it. It underpowered so you cant get hurt easily on it. Easy to work on and maintain. It depends on what you want out of it in the first place. Buy a used grom for under $3k and if you love it great. Want to upgrade go ahead.

      To each his own. I outlined why I feel it’s not the greatest first bike (creates bad habits & tired of it).

      @@RidinDad oh I am not giving you a tough time mate, or calling a Harley a fake bike or anything. I’m just not a fan of the company for several reasons and most of the riders. By most of the riders, I mean the exclusive part that only recognizes themselves as the only two wheels on the road and only give on another the time of day. Not to say there are not other groups like that as well, I just feel like if you are on two wheels for whatever machine there should be mutual respect.
      As far as Harley goes, the many government bailouts, the option to not build better machines for their customers until other companies have rose far ahead in advancements, and just plain charging for a name when not delivering anything significantly fresh for their customer line is what I am not a fan of. I initially wanted to get a Harley myself until I started researching many other bikes, again, it was initially a name that I looked out to and a widespread brand across North America.

      Yes I know some of those types of Harley riders too unfortunately :/. I dislike them too. I am not a fan of the Harley riders that give it a bad name. I’m part of the “new” generation of Harley guys that came from sport bikes and makes their bike a performance bike. I completely understand where you’re coming from man

    I rode a Grom and a Monkey. They were the slowest bikes I have ever ridden! It is the only motorcycle I have ridden where you turn the throttle and NOTHING happens! They remind me of those go carts that you rent and race on the track. They are governed I think for about 10mph and when you push the gas pedal it takes them about 5 minutes to think about moving. IMO, the Grom and Monkey are ok around the neighborhood or on country rural roads, but I wouldn't feel comfortable taking them on any highways or major roads where the speed limit is over 40mph. If you tried to merge in front of a car or a truck, you are going to be road kill! Forget highways! Why buy a 9hp motorcycle and soup it up to 15hp when you can just get a 300cc and have 35hp for a little bit more? They are are for pussies and kids that are afraid of a real motorcycle. I had a Honda 300 CBRR that I sold because it was too slow to stay with traffic, and it was over stressed on the highway because you are running near redline all the time. They are unsafe IMO in most situations because you can't avoid accidents because of insufficient acceleration.

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are immature in your riding career to think these bikes are “for pussies.” You can think they’re are unsafe in certain situations of course. And you don’t have to want to own one either. It’s your right to buy what you want

    • @RidinDad

      Having a small bike like this that goes 60/70 mph is a completely different sensation than taking a 300/400cc bike out and doing 70/80 no problem

      Dude you have no idea what you're talking about. For roads with a 45mph this is prob one of the best motorcycles out there. It's super fun , flickable , quick off the line and the new ones have a fifth gear... absolutely love mine.

      Gotchya. Good deal man! Working on your own bike is awesome and a truly rewarding experience. I’ve always said that from the beginning with any bike you have. Not only does it give you a new appreciation and proudness of your set up but it also gets you more familiar with whatever platform it is to fix things in the future or at least have knowledge on it. Good for you man!
