The best villains ever are dark mirror images of the hero. Like Legoshi, Melon is the offspring of two different animal species. But where Legoshi sees the beauty of his heritage (through reconnecting with his grandfather and remembering his last moments with his mother), Melon has only ever seen the ugly side to the point where it drives him to madness
I have not read it but i think it is pretty obvious that Legoshi is not dead aside from the fact that he is a main character there was a scene in one of the episodes where he was in a public bath with with his seal / walrus / sealion ( i forget which ) friend and his friend is teaching him the aquatic language specifically the words to call for help, and so basically setting up how he is going to escape from the chair in the water
