I think the anime sacrifices some humor in the manga to create more tension and darkness. But I really like plot rearrangement, giving some character more spotlight like Rouis and Deshico (which I really like the anime version of him.) Except my boy Jack 😭 He just appeared like only 1 scene.

Charles Darwin once said that the sea, because of how dangerous it is, has the greatest about of biodiversity and where evolution is more prevalent. It makes sense they wouldn't care about land laws about carnivores and herbivores. The sea is such a clusterfck that such notions are invalid. It truly is a survival of the fittest and they have come to just accept it.
I LOVE how this show completely detaches from human morals. If Beastars had been just "Animalesque humans with human morals" It wouldn't be interesting at all. I LOVE thinking about the psychology and morals of other worlds creatures. A comic I have been obsessed with is about a bunch of cats in a cult living on an island and fighting against the "heretics" that are killing their gods (just trying not to starve when they're on a barren island literally surrounded by an ocean full of food) it's called What Lurks Beneath. The characters are so wonderfully written and their psychology is truly fascinating to me. Because, they're still carnivores. They're still killers. Is it okay after all to eat your gods if they're immortal? I literally can't recommend this comic enough!!! It's about 800 pages right now and will be ~1600 when finished.
that and strict mega herbivours like cows and elephants pretty much dont exist for fish. only example i can think off the top my head is the seacow and thats a mammal.

Walruses and elephant seals in particular have a known annual kill count.

The ocean is kinda scary tbf. You get eaten in the ocean and that's what it would look like. The whole "killing AND THEN eating' thing is very much a land-based thing.
It is more that in the sea, their main food are largely plankton(zooplankton) which eat other small plant plankton. I think maybe, water society just came to a balance before it could have the tec to do something like make all their food from plankton. either that or many zooplankton being anthropods(and therefore meat) themselves makes as strong a prohibition against meat as on land, impossible.

If you ever see a food product that is listed as being "fortified" you will usually see b12 on the list of added nutrients.

I feel like the "living in Harmony" thing is more that they're all content with it, rather than any sort of peace 😅 Like the smaller fish that don't get eaten by the bigger fish still Runaway to try to save themselves. A tuna fish doesn't just see a shark approaching and go "aww well. It's been a good life"
Yeah, but the tuna's family won't try to persecute the shark, nor will they hold a grudge, and when the shark dies, she wouldn't be mad at all that her body will be food for the tunas. I think that's mostly due to the fact nearly all sea animals are carnivores to an extent, so the uneven division of herbivore-carnivore (herbivores being a majority, and thus their way of life being treated as the norm) does not work.
