X3 was the only one to submerge wholly in MM's obvious heavy metal vibes. X and X2 were almost there but just dipped a toe while servicing the electronic vibes the later entries would take over. Thus x3 is my top pick.

I was 6 years old when we picked this game up from funcoland. I just remember staring at the box art with my brother (11) the entire way home. Then the music really caught my attention when we threw it in. We had also played X and X2 as well before this.
Capcom had come a long way from the horrors of early classic Mega Man box art.
The best:
- Gravity Beetle. One of the best melodies ever written. Epic and highly emotive.
- Opening Stage. Stunning and potent.
- Toxic Seahorse. Rocking and powerful with a complex and captivating melody.
- Volt Catfish. Mighty, musical and rocking.
- Crush Crawfish. Strong and melodious.
- Tunnel Rhino. Dark, dramatic, sharp.
- Doppler Stage 1. Catchy, potent and eloquently melodic.
- Blizzard Buffalo. Very mysterious and dark but very melodious. It does sound "icy" or "invernal".

Gravity beetles theme and stage will always be a wonderful memory in my childhood. When you reach the part of his stage where you see the sunset in the background just…I don’t know. Reminds me of great childhood memories watching my brother play the game and just being free. I miss that innocence.

I've played and beat the 3 megaman X games on the snes and this is by far the best soundtrack of them all. I don't know, something about it always makes me think about an industrial toxic evironment... maybe I'm crazy but after all, these kind of things made the playthrough an all out experience.
I loved the music and the game as a child and for sure love it now.
X1 was the best
X2 was my favorite, but X3 stands out because it has Grunge as an inspiration. Listen to Guns and Roses' "My Michelle", and come back to talk again.

Megaman X and X3 reign over the OST of all megaman X franchise. Outstanding piece by piece. Both Zero theme's are epic. Both intro stages are outstanding. And while most of the Maverick theme's are outrageous. In X we have Spark mandrill and Storm Eagle shining above the rest, while in X3 we have Gravity Beetle and Neon Tiger (this last one probably because of Guns N Roses) shining above the rest.

The only thing shiny about the MMX3 soundtrack is the shit stain that it left on the series (aside from a few good songs). Neon Tiger was probably the worst theme in the series up to that point, at least to me. It just sounds braindead.

@@boofis8953 If you like the soundtrack, you do you. I personally think it sounds extremely repetitive and uncreative. I left a laborious comment on J's Reviews review of MMX3 about all of my qualms with the soundtrack.
Not to say I don't listen to it from time to time, it's catchy, although I do skip a few songs. But I CERTAINLY would not put it on par or above the first two soundtracks. If I had to sum it up, I'd say X1 and X2 are each about a 10/10 for me, and X3 is about a 5/10 for me.

the tone of X3 is a little darker than the previous Xs
X3 easily has the best OST of the SNES X games. The guitar here, especially shown in themes like Blast Hornet, the intro stage, and even Doppler 2, kicks all the ass and is a nice breath of fresh air from Capcom's other overused SNES soundfonts. Absolutely amazing.
Also, did you record this in real hardware? Most of the themes sound more muffled and flatter.

I think it's only because of his design (which is a stupid reason to hate on VC only because of that.) Personally though, VC is a mixed bag for me.

This definitely sounds better than the PSX1 OST version of these songs. That version isn't a BAD version, it just doesn't have the grit that the SNES tracks have. It's too shiny and polished sounding for a game like this. In addition to that, it just sounds like there's just too much going on in some of the tracks. You couldn't tell the difference between the background harmonies and the melodies. I also like how I can actually hear the melodies in the SNES version and the songs background doesn't get too much in the way.

Hard to tell if it's better than X1, but this soundtrack is jaw dropping. It has some weak songs, but the good ones are epic. The sampling sounds massive and complex on this game. That guitar sample that sounds a little off pitch is just awesome... I don't get why X2 has such following... of course, X2 sounds more clean, but it also sounds thin and has few memorable melodies.
Honestly its like what you said, X3 has the most number of "weak" songs out of the first 3 X games, so thats what kind of stands out.
This ost is not bad by any means, and it is as you said, the good songs are friggin epic, but yeah its just a case of tough competition, X1 entire ost is godlike for example.
Between X2 and X3 i think x2 has the better overall ost but x3 best songs are better than X2 best.

This is a very hit-and-miss soundtrack but conveniently, the best three maverick stage tracks (Gravity Beetle, Toxic Seahorse, Volt Catfish) are in a nice line at 8:37 :)
e: you know what, I know it's been a year but I want to back those thoughts up a little bit. See, I know everyone complains about the overuse of that one overdriven guitar... but when it works, it *works*. And ultimately, what makes or breaks a Mega Man song is how energetic it feels and how interesting the melody line is. And those three tracks I mentioned above have both of those qualities in spades.
Meanwhile at the other end of the scale, Neon Tiger and Tunnel Rhino are simultaneously making me fall asleep and making me wonder if the composer ran out of time to write melodies for them. I just ultimately feel like it's not the guitar, it's how you use it.
My favorite OST of all Megaman games. This has Opening Stage , Toxic Seahorse , Volt Catfish and Doppler Stage 1. Hard to beat

Some of these songs, like Zero's and Vile's themes, are among the better music tracks in all of Mega Man. Then some of these are an attack on your ear drums.

It's made for SNES. There are over 9,000 remixes and remuxes of these songs that have more instruments. MMX games have a pretty much stellar musical track record across the board.
