Which, btw, is in no way a bad way of video essay about filmmaking. It says a lot when a single formula has lasted for over 10 years on TH-cam (yes, EFAP is 10 years old, goddammit !). And I wish for it to keep going for another 10 years. But yes, agreed that it is refreshing to see a change of pace from time to time.
The first time I watched Chungking Express was when I was 18 years old. I always felt it was cheesy and chaotic, like listening to a stranger recount their dream. Ten years later, I tried watching it again, and this time I truly recognized it as a masterpiece. It is a film for those who are lonely and ponder the meaning of love. If you don't empathize with and understand the psychological developments of the characters, it will be very difficult to grasp its true meaning.
“Good directors need to learn how to script”. This quote reminds me of Kygo saying “a good producer needs to know how to play at least one instrument”. It is the vertical integration of crafts that makes you a stronger practitioner in almost anything.
Theres a million people who do "video essays" of WKW. You do the real thing. You and the guy who found the lens they used on Fallen Angels (The 6.8mm/aka the 9.8 + angle adapter)
@@sorenkairyeah it's just a documentary, there was no narration, no input, just editing. A little disappointing. The editing is great but it needs more substance.

Chungking Express is my favorite Wong Kar Wai film. It's probably one of my favorite films, period. The fact that it was made like this is heavily inspiring for me.
BEAUTIFULLY put together. I've only seen three Wong Kar-Wai films so far: Chunking Express, In the Mood for Love, Fallen Angels. I'm actively watching them slowly so I don't rush it and run out of them quickly.
1:20 Wow never knew the the place where Cop 663 lives is the actual home of the Christopher Doyle (the cinematographer). That's why it looks so realistic and somehow gives off a "at home" vibes where someone actually lived in, not some set design constructed facade made to improve a scene's visuals. The apartment complimented well with Cop 663's character.
Just wanted to say, I'd never heard of Chungking Express or WKW until I stumbled upon your video just now, and this video alone has persuaded me to go see this film when it's showing in a nearby cinema in a months time. I love how you forgo the TH-cam "video essay" stylings for something closer to a traditional documentary, and your editing skills bring the whole thing together; it's a little piece of art in its own right. I'll definitely be checking out more of your work.
Chungking Express is one of the best films of all time for me and many others, you're lucky that you have the opportunity to see it in a cinema so definitely go for it, I'm sure you'll love it too.
I really like this short-documentary style that you managed to achieve. I think is enlighting to listen to people that were involved in the film, or people like Tarantino talking about it. Keep it that way man! Congrats.
Superlatives fail in trying to describe the genius of Chungking Express. Such a brilliant, moving, transcendently beautiful movie. Tony Leung and Faye Wong are perfect. The soundtrack is sublime. This is film in the most literal sense. You can practically smell the acetate wafting off of it. First watched it around '98 and if anything it's gotten even better with age.
No life is complete without spending a few nights at the Chungking Mansions. =) Chinese cinema are so underrated in the West. Thank you for showing the English speaking world what they've been missing. Your videos are well written, well edited and "enlightens" viewers to something beautiful. Subscribed. I'm putting in a plug for my favorite movie of all time: "Light the Red Lantern". A movie in which every scene, every character, every shot and every word is perfect. Where Western cinema struggles to create complex female characters "Light the Red Lantern" does it right. Also "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is so very good. It''s like an "anti-parody" of traditional Chinese "Kung Fu" movies, which are good when taken into context. Chinese cinema is a "rabbit hole" where once you start watching it you can't stop.
Thank you for your comment! I have been deeply in love with Eastern cinema for a long time. Especially Japanese and South Korean, but in the last few years I've been watching many films from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and they're indeed very inspiring. I also hope more and more people will explore this world, because there are many hidden gems in foreign cinema from the last 30 years.
@brian-beeler I'm not sure if you will see this, but thank you for your recommendation. I watched 'Raise The Red Lantern' last night, it was beautiful. Gong Li is brilliant and the other mistresses were also written and performed perfectly.
Man, I love this film so much and have had a big focus on micro-budget filmmaking on my channel, but I've never looked at this film through that lens. Maybe because I've always assumed a certain level of budget with the actors involved, the use of "Dreams", and the expense of shooting on film, but it's cool to see how guerilla the style was. Makes me love the film that much more. Top notch video here!
TH-cam recommended me this vid and the thumbnail was so nice I decided to watch the movie first and then this video. Somehow never seen a Wong Kar Wai film before, this was the first. There's so many movies to watch it's hard to decide what to choose... so I kinda just let these little signs guide me. I'm very happy I did! This movie is so special and beautiful, and you put together a very cool video about it! Thanks for the sign ;)
This was recommended to me today which is coincidentally, WKW's birthday and I absolutely enjoyed the content! Your editing on the video was beautiful and the facts, insightful!

I've subscribed and am def. looking forward to watching your next releases
I love this clip, thank you for sharing; it was very inspirational because I've been doing this sort of thing in Paris. Not easy because you have to find a team - and actors - who buy into this spirit. So many filmmakers romanticize this idea of being Wong Kar Wai or Godard but in the actual work, it's hard for people to embrace the concept of "embracing the unknown" and not have the perfect map to shoot;
