- Chungking Express has brought Wong Kar-wai international success despite all the difficulties and shortcomings of the project. In this documentary I explore the creation and style of the director’s highly acclaimed film from 1994 with footage from interviews and talks. Explained by his colleagues such as Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee, Tony Leung and his long-time partner and cinematographer Christopher Doyle.

I'm very happy, humbled (and a bit surprised) that this video got 2 thousand views out of nowhere. Thanks for all the kind comments! I'm about to start working on my next one, see you there.
Edit: We are at 100k views now, wow! I appreciate all the support and subscribers, if you enjoyed this video, consider checking out some of my other content as well, cheers!
great video.. keep it up
Amazing video, really inspired me and got me buzzing
I don't even know you and I'm proud of you man. This is a very well done video. I was so surprised to see so few subscribers.
You meant 20k ? :D
So brilliant constructing the authorial voice through archival footage!
this is a refreshing departure from the style of video essay thats taken over since Every Frame A Painting changed the game. really love it!
I was thinking the same thing.
THE PARADIGM SHIFT IS TAKING PLACE
Theres a million people who do "video essays" of WKW. You do the real thing. You and the guy who found the lens they used on Fallen Angels (The 6.8mm/aka the 9.8 + angle adapter)
That video by @WatchingtheAerial is amazing, I appreciate the kind comment!
exactly this.
this isn't a video essay tho, it's a mini doc. and they didnt even make it, just put some clips together.
Wonderful work indeed
@@sorenkairyeah it's just a documentary, there was no narration, no input, just editing. A little disappointing. The editing is great but it needs more substance.
The first time I watched Chungking Express was when I was 18 years old. I always felt it was cheesy and chaotic, like listening to a stranger recount their dream. Ten years later, I tried watching it again, and this time I truly recognized it as a masterpiece. It is a film for those who are lonely and ponder the meaning of love. If you don't empathize with and understand the psychological developments of the characters, it will be very difficult to grasp its true meaning.
Same here.
hmmm never got inspired by this film before ,watch it a long time ago, kinda boring
i want a 90's Cowboy Beebop movie with Takeshi Kaneshiro as Spike and Faye Wong as faye Valentine
soon enough i guess you'll be able to ask chat gpt to make it for you i guess
Not chat GPT,you can take something from human and do mix and match with your machine. thats not how you make art @@xaviero8678
@@xaviero8678 I already did 12 fingers Spike
This is one of the most pertinent comments I've seen on TH-cam.
so real fucking legendary comment, I wish
Every once in a while, a rare event of astronomical infrequency occurs. This is one of those blessèd times that the inscrutable algorithm serves up something special to a jaded audience, thereby giving more exposure to a deserving creator.
Keep going, dude. Keep going.
why you talk like a boomer scholar?
@@daftfunk in response to thine inquiry, I pose another; why not?
@@ashellooe you aint what you think lill bro
BEAUTIFULLY put together. I've only seen three Wong Kar-Wai films so far: Chunking Express, In the Mood for Love, Fallen Angels. I'm actively watching them slowly so I don't rush it and run out of them quickly.
Whoa interesting that you saw them in that order so far.I would highly recommend 2046.
3 words: Ashes of Time
You've seen his best. Happy Together is another masterpiece.
I really like this short-documentary style that you managed to achieve. I think is enlighting to listen to people that were involved in the film, or people like Tarantino talking about it. Keep it that way man! Congrats.
Superlatives fail in trying to describe the genius of Chungking Express. Such a brilliant, moving, transcendently beautiful movie. Tony Leung and Faye Wong are perfect. The soundtrack is sublime. This is film in the most literal sense. You can practically smell the acetate wafting off of it. First watched it around '98 and if anything it's gotten even better with age.
will never get tired of hearing conversations and essays about this masterpiece.
Like finding a kindred soul when striking up a conversation about this flick out in the wild
How the fuck do you not have more subscribers? This is TOP quality stuff.
For real, was thinking the same. Seems like this is a creator who really sweats the details. Really satisfying viewing
Sadly, with a clickbait title question unanswered
I feel lucky to have been recommended this video. It has a very different style than other cinema video essays. It feels great to watch.
1.4k subs versus 2.6k likes on the vid tells you how criminally underrated this js
This film has been in my top 5 since I first saw it in the late 90s. The 'other half' of the story, "Fallen Angels," is fantastic too.
I'm in a constant debate with myself about which one I like more, so I agree.
Fallen Angels is soooooo good.
Chungking Express is one of my favorite movies. Also perfect use of music.
No life is complete without spending a few nights at the Chungking Mansions. =)
Chinese cinema are so underrated in the West. Thank you for showing the English speaking world what they've been missing. Your videos are well written, well edited and "enlightens" viewers to something beautiful. Subscribed.
I'm putting in a plug for my favorite movie of all time: "Light the Red Lantern". A movie in which every scene, every character, every shot and every word is perfect. Where Western cinema struggles to create complex female characters "Light the Red Lantern" does it right. Also "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is so very good. It''s like an "anti-parody" of traditional Chinese "Kung Fu" movies, which are good when taken into context.
Chinese cinema is a "rabbit hole" where once you start watching it you can't stop.
Thank you for your comment! I have been deeply in love with Eastern cinema for a long time. Especially Japanese and South Korean, but in the last few years I've been watching many films from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and they're indeed very inspiring. I also hope more and more people will explore this world, because there are many hidden gems in foreign cinema from the last 30 years.
Chungking mansion is an incredible warren of life, but its also the only pnly place i ever experienced the misery of bed bugs.
This is HONG KONG cinema. NOT Chinese.
TH-cam recommended me this vid and the thumbnail was so nice I decided to watch the movie first and then this video. Somehow never seen a Wong Kar Wai film before, this was the first. There's so many movies to watch it's hard to decide what to choose... so I kinda just let these little signs guide me. I'm very happy I did! This movie is so special and beautiful, and you put together a very cool video about it! Thanks for the sign ;)
This is so good! I'm glad to be here from the start (almost)
The clips from Ang's speech are brilliant!
Thanks for making this video. Wonderful editing.
New favorite channel. Keep em coming!!!!
Tarantino doesn't get it (he simply can't). The word to attend here are the ones from Ang Lee and Kar Wai Wong himself.
Glorious, magic, poetic, genius writer-director.
Thanks a lot for sharing it! Kind regards.
Awesome video! wkw is one of the directors who really shaped my appreciation for cinema when I was young. I really appreciated this video not only for what I learned but also for the way you cut it together. Clean af, not distracting, not gimmicky, not overly ironic...smart and polished. I've subscribed and am def. looking forward to watching your next releases
Quality of cut is insane, it shows in views as well
great, was just looking for reference vids! thank you
This was recommended to me today which is coincidentally, WKW's birthday and I absolutely enjoyed the content! Your editing on the video was beautiful and the facts, insightful!

There's so much competition in terms of the amount of people on this platform making video essays, but thank goodness the YT algorithm did right this time. Can't wait to see more of your awesome videos!
Chungking Express is my favorite Wong Kar Wai film. It's probably one of my favorite films, period. The fact that it was made like this is heavily inspiring for me.

amazing video
This is great. Learned more here than all other essays
This video needs an essay done on itself. Really was a great watch
Absolutely brilliantly pieced together and edited, i genuinely thought this was an official TV documentary. I usually don't watch videos full-length, however, i was so captivated i watched till the end without notice!
P.s I subscribed!
Looking forward for more
Thank you, that's a huge compliment!
You nailed this.
You better go on creating man. I am tired of millions of soulless videos. You rock!👍
Just wanted to say, I'd never heard of Chungking Express or WKW until I stumbled upon your video just now, and this video alone has persuaded me to go see this film when it's showing in a nearby cinema in a months time.
I love how you forgo the TH-cam "video essay" stylings for something closer to a traditional documentary, and your editing skills bring the whole thing together; it's a little piece of art in its own right.
I'll definitely be checking out more of your work.
Chungking Express is one of the best films of all time for me and many others, you're lucky that you have the opportunity to see it in a cinema so definitely go for it, I'm sure you'll love it too.
@@JustOneMoreThing223 It's one of the benefits of living in/close to London. We have quite a few nice independent cinemas that show stuff like this.
nah, thats crazy that you have just 7 subs. you will become huge one day, thats for sure
Awesome video mate, awesome video
Well edited video eassy. Please keep them coming.....
you have to keep making videos. golden content.
its so cool to know that WKW did the slow shutter initially because of lack of light and turn out a style.
Editing is soo good!
Great content my friend, please keep on doing it, cheers from Argentina
Inspiring, thanks 🙏
1:20 Wow never knew the the place where Cop 663 lives is the actual home of the Christopher Doyle (the cinematographer). That's why it looks so realistic and somehow gives off a "at home" vibes where someone actually lived in, not some set design constructed facade made to improve a scene's visuals. The apartment complimented well with Cop 663's character.
Great video. Interesting content but also presented in a very stylistic way
thank you this is awesome
Nice. Very true your main task is solving problems as a director btw!
great video
This gives a nice iside in WKW beautiful unique Masterpiece.
Still in love with Chunking Express.
This was great!
Amazing video!
Your video's are incredible. I wouldn't be surprised if you have a million+ subscribers by the end of the year honestly
Thank you for the kind words, it means a lot!
Good job with the video!
Incredible video!
Well researched!
I only stopped and watched because I heard Uncle's voice from Jackie Chan Adventures once I saw the channel name. But I'm glad I did. Nice job. Thanks to The Algorithm. 😄😄
Thank you for this. I never knew.
