I grew up with an African Grey and 2 Amazonians. Something Maya didn't mention is the fact that those birds say good morning and goodnight to the day - using their full arsenal of vocabulary at maximum noise.
This might sound like a nice alarm clock - but I can guarantee you will get in trouble with your neighbors at day 2.
Also, Amazonians breed in trees. They are used to finding/creating holes everywhere. So if you have anything valuable in your house, say goodbye to it.

If you want a pet bird, get a pigeon. Sounds crazy, but I have an adopted pigeon and she is the sweetest thing. Fun to train (off leash walks are great fun with her and my dog), easily available from captive breeders as well as plenty of rescues needing homes, they live similar life spans to dogs or cats, they're non-destructive, and cute as heck.

Agreed! I have a pigeon and she is soooooo much better than any parrot in my opinion. They are still messy and poop everywhere but they are MUCH quieter and their beaks are even strong enough to hurt you at all. They are also very very affectionate and LOVE to be pet. My pidge will lay on my lap and just let me pet her for hours XD

as a bird lover, i will probably never own one. i would absolutely love to, but i dont want to make that commitment with how unpredictable life can be and knowing that i struggle to even take care of myself at times. but at least theres viseos like these that exist so i can still enjoy their beauty 😊
also: maya it is truly so inspiring all that you do. i hope you're proud of all you've achieved, its amazing seeing someone so dedicated to animal conservation. once i have more time i plan to volunteer to places local to me :)

I understand and respect your caution but some smaller birds like parakeets can be responsible pets without too much care. That said, I definitely understand not even being able to care for yourself sometimes but don't give up just yet :)

thank you for addressing this. My family has parrots, so we know the insanely hard work and love that goes into their well-being. Online they seem fun, cute, and easy-going, but those videos never show the hard or challenging moments. It is a LIFELONG COMMITMENT!!

It is highly variable on species as well, not all parrots live 50-70 years. Budgies live 10-15, pionus and poicephalus live 25-40 years. 50-70 years really only applies to medium and larger sized parrots. Just really if parrots are the right option for you pick the correct species(budgies, lineolated parakeets, cockatiels, poicephalus and pionus) and avoid getting one as a novelty pet.

  • @inejunta6569
    @inejunta6569 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Omg, this couldn't be truer. My parents got into the exotic bird thing and my mum worked for an aviary owner. The aviary got shut down. So my parents got their two African greys back but they didn't get taken out. I am not obsessed with parrots but I felt guilty enough to take them for months at a time and there is a tree in the middle of my apartment now.
FML, just the day to day was so exhausting with them. One thing they are great at is going into 120 decibel screech alarm mode if I'm tempted to take a nap during the day when I should be studying. And tbh still on and off for maybe 4 hours. But it's just a constant effort. I have grown to force myself to love them and they are cute, but yes. The only one who should get a parrot is a single person that stays home and wants to take care of something for most of the day for the rest of their lives.
Since one can mimic me as a child I pretty much have to have their back until I'm dead. I'd feel better if they were dumb but their awareness is kind of scary. And if I was asked their super power I would say mimicking noises after pooping every 5 mins. People want their pets to love them and it's why they should get a domestic cat or dog that is literally made for them. As far as wild animals in your house go, sometimes you forget that it's like taking one straight out of a rainforest. They aren't domestic... At all...

Before I bought my house, my sun conure had gotten me evicted from 4 rental properties. When I would go to work he would scream all day until I came home. I also have to sweep and wash the floors multiple times daily, as he sprays seeds everywhere and shits on everything. He’s cool, but I probably wouldn’t have got him if I knew how insane he was before hand.

And also, if for some reason you do decide to get a parrot, despite what you’ve just heard- ADOPT!!!! Don’t buy from a breeder!! There are SO many parrots in animal shelters because people adopt them without knowing what they’re getting into, get sick of them, and give them up.

As someone who has 6 parrots some of which have, in the simplest terms CPTSD and self harm from moving homes, please don’t get a bird. I love them all very dearly. But they are not only expensive in the way of buying supplies for them you have to change your whole lifestyle around them. Many everyday items you use in your house will kill them slowly and painfully. Birds are hard, very rewarding but hard.
My opinion from experience, most people who want parrots actually want pigeons. Parrots are not domesticated, even raised by humans they are wild animals. Pigeons are domesticated, if you really want a bird look into pigeons, they thrive with the love of a human and will absolutely show you so much love without a lot of the neurotic and complex behaviours of a parrot.
Love to all people who have tiny dinosaurs in there homes, it’s hard and I’m sure your doing great ❤

I owned an African Grey for 30yrs. It was a dumb ex boyfriends decision and I ended up with a 30 year commitment. I was 24yrs old when I got him and 54yrs old when he passed. I loved Blue but I would NEVER EVER recommend a parrot for anyone. They are destructive and like Maya said it’s like having a toddler for ever. Please don’t.

There is a hookbill rescue near me and they are ALWAYS at-capacity. I know pet parrots aren't going to go away (I have parakeets) but I wish more people would think to rescue those already needing homes instead of buying baby birds and supporting the illegal pet trade.

One thing important to note is that parrots that are wild caught in the US are illegally smuggled. The US banned the importation of wildcaught parrots in the 90's. Also, not all parrots live 50-70 years. Some parrots like budgies and similarly sized birds live 10-15 years. 50-70 years generalizations apply to medium to larger sized parrots like amazons and greys. There are parrots such as pionus and poicephalus who live far less 25-40 years. These parrots are a better option compared to other species like greys and amazons.
