@@alveolate nah. They grew up in another facility and not in the wild, the previous staff they spent their whole life with must've taught them how to play like that and they're just showing us now what they love doing.
Im pretty sure Awas name comes from Te Reo Māori, as it means river! Which is so cool!

I'm not sure if it's been done in wolves, but the librela injections for arthritis in dogs have shown a very positive improvement in management, I wonder if this is something they could try for Awa. I know we give our wolves cytopoint and there both monoclonal antibodies.

A wild horse or a wolf could totally benefit from nail trims. Pet horses and dogs benefit from them, but they also neutralize the negative side affects from human intervention.

Wouldn't interacting with them after feeding be a good idea? I know that's a thing for large cat species, wonder if feeding/ hand feeding them and then trying to push more in that nature is a good idea. Hand feeding then running is a pretty bad starting point.

they do go into the enclosure for maintenance/cleaning and the wolfdogs shift to the opposite end of the enclosure to stay far away from the humans
The comment above is right ^ and also it is better safe than sorry, they aren't fully dogs so their behaviors can be unpredictable. they certainly do seem so sweet tho :)))
it’s definitely always better safe than sorry because if the wolves do follow their wolf instincts and hurt someone it’ll cause a lot of problems for both alveus and the wolves
As people have replied already, they do go in the enclosure for maintenance, and Awa and Timber move to the other side of it to stay away from humans. That being said, this means that for now they are still afraid of humans getting too close to them. Spending too much time in their enclosure could turn them from scared to stressed, which then can escalate into violence due to wolf instincts. Better be very cautious.

they treat them like they are the wildest animals.. but from what i understand barely anything is known about them and the previous situation was kinda sketch? so they could have lived with humans and ate from bowls and had daily walks just like normal dogs? :S
they dont seem that shy or wild to me ^^ do we know their wolf % by now? i missed some vids i think.
I am pretty sure the place they were at didn't treat them well so they are wary of people because of past experiences. Also when it comes to wild animals it's better to be safe than sorry.
They don't know the exact wolf content yet, the DNA tests are bound to arrive any day now. The current estimation is 70-80% wolf. However, even if it were less, it would take a VERY low wolf percentage to have them behave like dogs. Wolves have natural instincts that humans slowly erased in dogs when we selectively bred them to be our companions. A wolf raised by humans would have to be tamed to behave like a dog, whereas dogs are domesticated. Taming is training, and domestication is innate. As such, taming doesn't get rid of instincts, which are innate, it just teaches the animal to dampen them, which is not only unfair, but imperfect as relapres can happen. This is why Awa and Timber are treated like wild animals, they have more wolf instincts than dog innate domestication.
she’s explained many times why these kinds of dogs have to live in enclosures like this. they’re too wild to live inside, they’re wild side would be untamable and horrible to have as a pet, and they can’t live in the wild because they’re domestic side has taken away from their instincts since they’re all bred and raised in captivity for the pet trade. wolf dogs should not exist, they’re only for people who thought wolves were cool and wanted one nice enough to have as a pet until they realize that that’s not possible.
u guys already know how much % wolf they are? cuz if they mostly dog you can better try to bond more otherwise they will become aggresieve , and even with more % wolf this is possible but need to be more carefull for the attack
They estimate that they're 70-80% wolf and like she said in this video, the vet collected the DNA sample so they'll be testing what the wolf/dog ratio is.

@@jordynensor2081 i know i don't mean trow a stick and let them bring it back but would be easier when i can come in the encloser and don't get attacked , building a bond means more then 'make it a lap dog' it als mean trusting so u can move in and clean or when a storm/tornado is coming you dont need to dart them and move them with 4 people but just can lure them inside or whatever without needing to be carefull
@@jordynensor2081 they do that aswell with Tigers Lions bears and other animals in the zoo they dont make it lapdogs but it makes it easy to do something when needed instead off darting it and trying to move it with a group off people instead + darting in the long run also change their behaviour in the bad way
They haven't got the DNA results back yet, probably won't for a few weeks or months still. But they look and act extremely wolfy. For example, they never seem to bark, and they are always scrape marking (where they dig a bit after peeing on something). They are definitely high content wolfdogs or hybrids. I think their estimate of 70-80% is probably accurate.
Also wolf attacks on people are extremely rare, and these two don't seem very aggressive. So, it's really unlikely they will ever attack anyone, unless someone cornered them or something, which they know not to do.
