Great tutorial Felix. As 2023 fades away, I'd like to say thank you for all the tips and tricks you passed along this year. You are one of the nicest guys on TH-cam with your helpfulness and genuine interest in helping others. Merry Christmas to you and your family and all the best for 2024 man!
James, that's a great thing to say. I agree. I think that this video is a great Christmas gift to all of us. Thanks, Felix. Merry Christmas to both of you.@@FelixImmler
I mentionied a card scraper edge on the spine in a previous video's comment(where I said that it can be good if it is put on the tail of the venture). thanks for mentioning my idea and watching the video i recommanded. But my method of making a quick(not so sharp) card scraper edge in the outdoors is using a tungsten cardbide machine tool as a burnisher. It is sharper than the burnisher and would creat a perfect burr, but this sharpness allows knives with non-perfect 90degree edges to take a burr. Thank you so much for showing my idea in a video, I totally did not expect it! I always love learning from many different fields and take inspiration from them into my own field
DANKE FELIX
I've been running a burr like this for some years now on all my bushcraft knives and honestly wouldn't be without it because of the many uses. My method to produce the burr very similar to the one you're describing. I use a honing steel mostly but also have a tool made from an old blunt router bit where I use the shaft rather than the blade of course. Great video and a very happy Christmas to you.
Greetings Felix. Excellent video as always. I must admit i never thought of creating a bur on my knives. They are all 90 degrees, but you've inspired me to go further. Thank you again for providing the best informative, and practical content. Happy holidays to you and your family.
Thanks Felix, loved it. I'm an engineer and long time knife lover and would like to add something to the commentary about how you ground the knife spine. I really liked how you did it. There are risks to your person every time you pick up an edge tool and if you cannot manage those risks you should not be handling sharp things. Of course, there are recommended ways of handling sharp things and that's fine, but we need to be able to recognise risk and to weigh it against any potential benefit. If you cannot do this, you will not last in a true survival situation. I've taken to doing it as you showed in the video, mostly because of physical limitations; it's just more comfortable for me. For most of my life, I've had high-risk physical jobs where there were little options available, so, learning to recognise risks and assess how to best approach any given task was the best survival tool I had. Again, if you can't understand what the pointy or slicey bits of knives can do to you (and how to stop it happening), don't use sharp things like knives. Keep up the good work, and thanks again.
Hello Ben. What an honor that you watched my video! I'm really happy about your positive comment! Thank you for your great work on your channel. Kind regards from Switzerland Felix
Very useful techniques - and your English is absolutely fine, Felix. Thanks for all the great videos you've produced in 2023. Happy holidays to you and your family.
Hahaha. I had to re-grind my Morakniv to be able to strike on the ferrorod. Well done Felix! Excellent! GREAT DEMO OF ALL THE STEPS! THE BEST VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF CREATING A BURR! All the best, Rob der Dinosaurier vom Fricktal
Agree it is more a compromise you have to choose to,for what purpose you want to use it for. Merry Christmas and a great New Year to you and your loved ones
I am doing the 60 degree angle on my Moras with the Work sharp field sharpener and it is working amazingly well. I am sharpening close to the end of the blade, opposite from your technique as i was cutting my finger when too close but will probably changing the edge sharpening but still i want to have it at least 2 cm from the handle as sometimes for precision i use the thumb. I agree completely that further the sharpening edge is , more difficult to operate is.Great tutorial and tips again!!!
At the tip of a Mora blade there is actually about a centimeter of sharp spine where the Scandi bevel ends. This can be used as an emergency option for creating sparks with a ferrocerium-rod.
Hi Felix, the opinions in case of a spine should ve sharp or rounded are different and there are many of them. I also like a sharp spine more than a rounded one, because it's simply an additional tool. Thanks for another very interesting and useful video and i wish you and your familiy Merry Christmas, some hopefully relaxing days and a great start into the new year 2024! LG
Thanks for this information Felix, I am a big fan of Mora knives and have now put a 90 degree spine on mine and can finally use it as a ferro rod sparker. I never realised it was the angle, I thought it was maybe the metal used. So thank you again for this fantastic Christmas present of being able to upgrade my simple Mora. Enjoy your Christmas and look forward to seeing your videos in the new year
Many thanks! my Mora companion is going to get this treatment! at work we have 10mm hardened pins, I will put one into a wooden file handle for the burnishing stage, thank you for passing on your experience and knowledge my friend, it is appreciated.
Oh Great! AnotherFelix video!! Always good to see you Felix, always I learn something from you. Thank you. Have a great Christmas with your family. See you in 2024. Les in UK 🇬🇧
Great information about using a burnisher on the spine of a knife. A polished drill bit shaft should also make a good burnisher. A lot of information in your videos!
I love your video, Felix - you are clearly used to handling tools and have had a lot of practice. Any new thing I learn from someone like you I always take it slowly when trying for myself, and that includes how I use the grinder etc - with care as you did. I suppose we could all do things very safely or not, but your videos are targeted at people with some knowledge of the handling and using knives, and sharpening the spine probably is only done by a miniscule percentage of people with knives. I loved the burnishing- pure genius. And thank you for your openness and generosity sharing who/where you got the idea from in support of their channel too. Thank you again 🙏
That's a wonderful idea 💡. I've used wood scrapers before but never thought of burnishing the spine of a knife like a wood scraper. Merry Christmas to you and your family, keep up the good work and God bless
Nice job on the burr demo - one of the best I have seen. Have you done a clip on how to make leather lacing? An old trapper trick was to stick the knife in a block of wood, put a hole in a scrap piece of leather or hide, start a little piece and pull - the leather rotates around the blade and you can pull off a long, even piece of leather - good for repairing traditional rawhide snowshoes or just making lacing for whatever task you need.
lieber Felix- schöne Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch. Und vielen Dank für all diese informativen Videos- für deine liebevolle und positive Art und bleib so und schönen Urlaub!😂👍🏽
This is a wonderful video and very well explained! I really do like your homemade burnisher. Also, Merry Christmas to you and yours and enjoy your TH-cam break!
Wow! Today I learned something really important! That was one of the best demonstrations videos I've ever viewed! It's amazing what a huge difference that such a little extra effort/skill can accomplish! I can't wait to try it out on one of my knives! Thank you for a great Christmas present here on Christmas eve! Wishing you and your family a happy and blessed Christmas and an exciting and productive New Year! I'm waiting (impatiently perhaps?) for the latest news about the Venture improvements! Cheers Felix!
@FelixImmler I did it today, thank you. I was too wary of using power tools, so I put the knife in a vice and used a file. I then finished with successively finer diamond stones. It was a great success, with a neat finish, and it showers plentiful sparks of a ferro rod. Thank you for the motivation.
I had to sharpen the spine on a fairly expensive bushcraft knife so I could use it like you demonstrated. But, I was in the field and had to use my Leatherman file on it. It took a little while, but I got a nice sharp spine that should have been on it when it was made.
Love the saw in the Swisstool, it can easily strike a ferro rod or scrape stuff. But for fixed blades i used a rough diamond sharpener to get a 90 degree angle, even my daily carry knife has this because it is indeed very useful:)
With a metal file and sharpening stones, I created a scraping surface on the inside straight portion of the lockable cap lifter on a 111 mm Soldatenmesser 08 SAK. The liner lock makes it easy and safe to use this DIY - about 12 mm long - scraping surface for tasks like striking a fire steel.
Bought the Venture to gauge its quality before I want to buy the pro for my brother for his 40th birthday and I wanted to see how good they are before getting the more special and slightly more expensive one. The quality is absolutely top notch! Very impressive, and I'm very happy with my purchase. So I guess he'll have a nice present for his birthday.
Another place you will find an exceptional sharp and square spine for scraping wooden and using a fire striker is on the wood saw blade on the Swiss Army Knife - it's as sharp as a cabinet scraper. Merry Christmas to you and your kin Mr Immler 🌲, I've thoroughly enjoyed your channel and can't wait to see what you bring us in 2024 🍻

Danke Felix für den Tipp, ich habe bei meinen Messer immer den Messerrücken im 90 grad Winkel scharf geschliffen. Das mit den Kanten umlegen werde ich mal ausprobieren
On my bushcraft knife, I keep the distance where my thumb can reach, (around 2 inches), rounded, for carving, and the rest of the blade towards the tip, I keep very sharp ( 90 degrees, ),, So, I have the best of both worlds I think,, 🤔🤔🔪🔪,, Great video Felix,, Merry Christmas to you and your family, 🎅🎅👍👍
I completely agree, I used a file to obtain a 90-degree spine on my mora companion. I consider that feature essential in a outdoors knife. Buon natale Felix!

Excellent! Your homemade jigs are great. Maintaining 90 degrees at all times is crucial and thus the jigs are needed. One little roll away from 90 degrees when grinding and you have ruined it…I know from experience!
Excellent video, l would like to do this to the under side of the finger nail file on my Victorinox. That way, the sharp edge is always folded into the handle. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

The 90 degree spine on a folding saw or leatherman of victorinox saws are also pretty great.
Yes, but they don't have a pressed burr
