Great tutorial Felix.
As 2023 fades away, I'd like to say thank you for all the tips and tricks you passed along this year. You are one of the nicest guys on TH-cam with your helpfulness and genuine interest in helping others. Merry Christmas to you and your family and all the best for 2024 man!
Hello James. Your Comment makes me very happy! Thank you very much and happy holidays!
James, that's a great thing to say. I agree. I think that this video is a great Christmas gift to all of us. Thanks, Felix.
Merry Christmas to both of you.@@FelixImmler
And do not worry about your English please , you are easy to listen to . Thanks for your videos Felix .
Some of the best knife information, tips and tricks on TH-cam! Merry Christmas and all the best to you and your family Felix!
Your comment makes me very happy. Thank you so much!
Excellent! Your homemade jigs are great. Maintaining 90 degrees at all times is crucial and thus the jigs are needed. One little roll away from 90 degrees when grinding and you have ruined it…I know from experience!
Thanks a lot for your positive feedback!
Outstanding stuff, thanks Felix and happy Christmas
Thank you..i wish you the same!
I've been running a burr like this for some years now on all my bushcraft knives and honestly wouldn't be without it because of the many uses. My method to produce the burr very similar to the one you're describing. I use a honing steel mostly but also have a tool made from an old blunt router bit where I use the shaft rather than the blade of course. Great video and a very happy Christmas to you.
Thank you so much for this super interesting feedback!!
Either High Speed Steel (HSS) or Tungsten (preferred!) for turning the burr & burnishing!!!
Greetings Felix. Excellent video as always. I must admit i never thought of creating a bur on my knives. They are all 90 degrees, but you've inspired me to go further. Thank you again for providing the best informative, and practical content. Happy holidays to you and your family.
Thanks a lot for your positive feedback. I wish you happy holidays!
Thanks Felix for all your hard work! Best wishes for all your future endeavours.
Thank you so much for this kind comment!
The 90 degree spine on a folding saw or leatherman of victorinox saws are also pretty great.
Yes, but they don't have a pressed burr
Please don't do that! I mean the first example, eating from a tree trunk. Foxes mark their territory by placing their stools on raised areas. Stones, sawn-off tree trunks. Placing food on a sawed-off tree trunk without a base is questionable because of the fox tapeworm. I also don't want to cut my sausage with a blade where I have previously wiped everything with it. Just some good advice.
Thanks a lot for your interesting feedback. You are right!
On my bushcraft knife, I keep the distance where my thumb can reach, (around 2 inches), rounded, for carving, and the rest of the blade towards the tip, I keep very sharp ( 90 degrees, ),,
So, I have the best of both worlds I think,, 🤔🤔🔪🔪,,
Great video Felix,,
Merry Christmas to you and your family, 🎅🎅👍👍
Well done! I wish you the same!
I mentionied a card scraper edge on the spine in a previous video's comment(where I said that it can be good if it is put on the tail of the venture).
thanks for mentioning my idea and watching the video i recommanded.
But my method of making a quick(not so sharp) card scraper edge in the outdoors is using a tungsten cardbide machine tool as a burnisher. It is sharper than the burnisher and would creat a perfect burr, but this sharpness allows knives with non-perfect 90degree edges to take a burr.
Thank you so much for showing my idea in a video, I totally did not expect it!
I always love learning from many different fields and take inspiration from them into my own field
Thanks a lot for your super interesting comment!
Thank you for such a great video Felix very very useful!👍😎🦾
Thanks a lot for watching!
Hi Felix, the opinions in case of a spine should ve sharp or rounded are different and there are many of them. I also like a sharp spine more than a rounded one, because it's simply an additional tool. Thanks for another very interesting and useful video and i wish you and your familiy Merry Christmas, some hopefully relaxing days and a great start into the new year 2024! LG
Thank you very much for your positive feedback and you kind wishes!
I don't use a sharp spine. I accidently cut an elastic with a shapened spine on my knife. The elastic struck me in my one good eye and now I'm blind.
Thanks for your hint!
At the tip of a Mora blade there is actually about a centimeter of sharp spine where the Scandi bevel ends. This can be used as an emergency option for creating sparks with a ferrocerium-rod.
Felix you get so excited when you’re talking about the spine of the knife that I can’t help but get excited!👍🙏🏻❤️
Yes i know that and i will make a video about!
This is a wonderful video and very well explained! I really do like your homemade burnisher. Also, Merry Christmas to you and yours and enjoy your TH-cam break!
Thank you so much my friend! I'm looking forward to the new year and hope for a nice project together!
@@FelixImmler Indeed. Sounds great!
This is one of those guys where I hit like before I watch the video. Always impressive videos!
Your comment makes me happy. Thank you very much!
Felix - excellent explanations (and images) of why such a bur is desirable, what a desirable bur looks like, and how to achieve such a bur. Thank you and please have a very Merry, Christ-filled, Christmas as well as a Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Thank you very much for your positive feedback!
For safety while handling. I put a thin strip of Duct tape (10 mm) folded over the blade edge to protect from the sharp blade while working the spine.
You are absolutly right!
👋🔥✌Hello, Felix. Thenk's á lot for a good knowledge 👍✌🎆🎄🎉
Very welcome!
Great advice.
I usually tape the sharpened edge of my knives before they go up to a grinder...safety first! 😊
Thanks for this great hint!
@@FelixImmler :- Thank you for your videos!
Never grind against the direction of travel of the grinding wheel.
You are absolutly right!
Wow! Today I learned something really important! That was one of the best demonstrations videos I've ever viewed! It's amazing what a huge difference that such a little extra effort/skill can accomplish! I can't wait to try it out on one of my knives!
Thank you for a great Christmas present here on Christmas eve!
Wishing you and your family a happy and blessed Christmas and an exciting and productive New Year!
I'm waiting (impatiently perhaps?) for the latest news about the Venture improvements!
Cheers Felix!
Your comment makes me happy!! Thank you very much. i wish you and your family also a fantastic new year!
When sharpening the spine you are doing the exact same process used in ice skates. Particularly figure skates or hockey goalie skates. Other hockey skates are ground to be concave. Goalie or figure skates are closer to a flat 90 degree grind. So, you could go to a skate shop and see if they can do your knife, if you don't feel comfortable yourself.
Once you get the initial shape, you can proly find a hand sharpener for skates to touch it up.
Thanks a lot for this inspiration!
i grind down my mora 511's to get a 90 degree spine.
Super.. but the presses burr is super important!
It's worth pointing out that this is completely pointless on san mai knives where the outer layers are iron or some unhardenable steel. It really needs to be a homogenous blade. Even differential hardening or tempering like edge hardening or a soft back draw, renders it kinda useless. You want the whole blade to be hardened. So if you want a knife with a hamon, it's worth considering treating the back the same as the edge
Thanks for your comment!
Always peeled carrots with the back of my knives.
And yearly I smooth out walking sticks and tool handles with the back of my bushcraft knife. Counter intuitive but you get better grip with a rough cut stick than a well rounded stick - so I shave the bark off my sticks while green, and then smooth out the ridges with back of my knife. Quick and dirty job does the best. I make handles for my tools and family as well - hoes, fries, axes and hammers.
As others have said, you should probably add a big disclaimer warning people about the danger of grinding a knife the way you did. Or pin a comment saying that. I have had a knife flick at my arm while sharpening like that - first and last time I make the mistake. Luckily it wasn’t my last mistake…
Cheers from Portugal.
And merry Christmas Felix!
Thanks a lot for your super interesting comment! I wish you happy holidays!
With a metal file and sharpening stones, I created a scraping surface on the inside straight portion of the lockable cap lifter on a 111 mm Soldatenmesser 08 SAK. The liner lock makes it easy and safe to use this DIY - about 12 mm long - scraping surface for tasks like striking a fire steel.
Super idea! Thanks a lot for your comment!
Hahaha. I had to re-grind my Morakniv to be able to strike on the ferrorod. Well done Felix! Excellent! GREAT DEMO OF ALL THE STEPS! THE BEST VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF CREATING A BURR! All the best, Rob der Dinosaurier vom Fricktal
Danke mein lieber Fricktaldinosaurier 😂
I really enjoy how much joy you seem to get out of sharing this information. A safe, healthy, and happy New Year to you!
I am doing the 60 degree angle on my Moras with the Work sharp field sharpener and it is working amazingly well. I am sharpening close to the end of the blade, opposite from your technique as i was cutting my finger when too close but will probably changing the edge sharpening but still i want to have it at least 2 cm from the handle as sometimes for precision i use the thumb. I agree completely that further the sharpening edge is , more difficult to operate is.Great tutorial and tips again!!!
I thought a nice angle like that could possibly be very useful. Any safety drawbacks that you may have noticed while carrying or using?
Mate, even I learned quite a few new things from this clip!
Keep up the great work, Felix.
All the best,
Ben from OZ.
Hello Ben. What an honor that you watched my video! I'm really happy about your positive comment! Thank you for your great work on your channel. Kind regards from Switzerland
Felix
Yes, since learning the value of the burr from you, all of my knives have been given such an edge on the spines.
Thanks for your positive feedback!
I just use a utility blade dolphin knife
and a modified hand vise for files for utility blades and reciprocating blades for everything . I use the the thicker utility blades otherwise will snap and brake . Thats a neat trick using a drill bit backwards .
Thanks a lot for your interesting feedback!
Great video again and your English is good I wish you a Merry Christmas as well and see you soon stay healthy
Thanks a lot Mike 😂
Thanks Felix, loved it. I'm an engineer and long time knife lover and would like to add something to the commentary about how you ground the knife spine. I really liked how you did it. There are risks to your person every time you pick up an edge tool and if you cannot manage those risks you should not be handling sharp things. Of course, there are recommended ways of handling sharp things and that's fine, but we need to be able to recognise risk and to weigh it against any potential benefit. If you cannot do this, you will not last in a true survival situation. I've taken to doing it as you showed in the video, mostly because of physical limitations; it's just more comfortable for me. For most of my life, I've had high-risk physical jobs where there were little options available, so, learning to recognise risks and assess how to best approach any given task was the best survival tool I had. Again, if you can't understand what the pointy or slicey bits of knives can do to you (and how to stop it happening), don't use sharp things like knives. Keep up the good work, and thanks again.
Thanks a lot for your very interesting feedback!
i tried this with the shaft of an 8mm drill bit. it did nothing. spine is not bad, rounds over pine lumber corners fine, but no better than straight after the sharpening stone treatment. may be my technique, might be the tool. i only tried 3 times but paid attention to the angles you described
Thanks for your feedback!
Great video lots of great information! Have a Very Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎁🎁🎁
Thank you very much!
Loved This Felix ! Hoping You & Yours Have A Safe & Merry Christmas From Frosty Canada Friend ! ATB T God Bless
I wish you the same. Thanks a lot!
When the back finally rounds out, it can be trued on a sharpening stone.
I guess i the video i show you an other technique...
Stephan
Danke lieber Stephan! Ich wünsche Dir auch fantastische Festttage!
Felix, forgive me i forgot to wish you a Happy New Year! I hope all is well with you and yours😊
Thank you very much. I wish you the same!
Sharpen the spine on an ice skate sharpener.
No... i guess a ice skater dont wan't a burr on the skid 🤣
Wrap your thumb before using a knife, so it would still be attached after partially cutting it.
Thanks a lot for your comment!
There are some videos on TH-cam showing some problems with the very thin cutting edge. Has that problem been corrected?
Merry Christmas, Mr Immler... (from Brazil).
I wish you the same!
bottom line ... the burr is so SHORT that it's barely thick enough to cut into your skin. Especially if you have rough // calloused hands.
I tried to shave with my knife.! Didn't work A quote from scar face!
Thanks a lot for your comment.. but i don't understand it.
Will you be making a video on a regular victorinox again soon? It think there are more people with a regular victorinox. I would love your bushcraft knive. But could never afford it. Let alone the pro. But a regular Victorynox is something everybody can afford. 😊
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦

Hello dear Marguerite. I wish you a merry Christmas!

Tschüss! 👋🤠

Thanks for your comment!
I also have a bushcraft knife with the edge on the back and I use it very often for various things, excellent advice, greetings friend Felix
Hi Felix,
watched your video just again, after I have seen it a couple of weeks back and kept it settling ... I feel, some videos are like a good Gulasch, tastes even better when warmed up ;-)
Great tutorial as always, just to add a little trick from my side, which I learned from my grand dad: if you fear (maybe based on former bad experience) to get your thumb cut by the spine, simply put a band-aid on your thumb before you start. Means, don't use it after bleeding, use it in order to avoid bleeding ;-)
Else, nothing special to add. I'm usually using sand paper and diamond sharpening blades, both getting at low costs in any hardware store here around, for most of those tasks.
Just loving to watch your videos, when I find the time. Hope your are well and wish you, a little bit late but ..., all the best for 2024!
Best regards from Bangalore, Robert
HALLO ROBERT!
…. Felix du Fuchs! Ich mag deine Videos. Aber ich liebe meine Vic Taschenmesser.
Danke Gerhard. LG und schöne Festtage!
Thanks for this information Felix, I am a big fan of Mora knives and have now put a 90 degree spine on mine and can finally use it as a ferro rod sparker. I never realised it was the angle, I thought it was maybe the metal used. So thank you again for this fantastic Christmas present of being able to upgrade my simple Mora. Enjoy your Christmas and look forward to seeing your videos in the new year
Your comment makes me happy! Thank you and enjoy your holidays!
How many times can he say “burr” in one breath.
😄
When I will finally get this blade, I will be on the expert of the tool!😅
Yes..do this. Thank you so much my friend for your support during the 2023!
anybody know where Felix went? Hope he's ok.
Tomorrow i am back! Thanks for your request!
Another place you will find an exceptional sharp and square spine for scraping wooden and using a fire striker is on the wood saw blade on the Swiss Army Knife - it's as sharp as a cabinet scraper. Merry Christmas to you and your kin Mr Immler 🌲, I've thoroughly enjoyed your channel and can't wait to see what you bring us in 2024 🍻
Greetings Felix! Happy New Year TH-cam Friend! Good Health and Happiness to you and lovely family!
I have a question, I may have missed this in a previous video -
Have you tried to put a bearing into a knife scale for a bow drill? So the drill will spin in the bearing while being held by the knife handle.
Danke gleichfalls. LG aus der Schweiz!
For me, a sharp 90 degree spine is essential for any bushcraft knife. Like you say, Felix, there are so many benefits from having a sharp spine in the field. I agree with you. Why do most outdoor knives not have this feature? I suppose it's due to liability from injury by idiots. 😆
You have decided yo apply my idea but instead of using the spine of the wood saw, you use a knife... cheers from Argentina
As I see you have connection with victorinox
Ask them please
Why they are sadists?

Thanks a lot!
@@FelixImmler You have no idea how glad I am that you responded to my message. Thank you teacher victorinox
Du hast absolut Recht!
Fun Fact:
This trick really isnt "unknown" a casual glance at the 'tube shows hits from 7 years back
Personally I don't use sharp spine. I often put thumb on the spine and did cut it in the past.
Saying that I agree that manufacturers could leave spine edne sharp. It's way easier to chapher it than make it sharp again.
One question, why can't you scrape things with the edge? If it's 90° to the object it works same as scraping woth the spine.
Thank you for your wonderful content, Felix!
I wish you and your family a peaceful Christmas Time and a good start in the new year!
I wish you the same ... Thanks a lot!
I watched this for a second time, and now I'm wondering. When creating the burr on the spine, why not just skip step 3 and go directly to step 4? Or does the folding over of the burr add something?
Agree it is more a compromise you have to choose to,for what purpose you want to use it for.
Merry Christmas and a great New Year to you and your loved ones
Yes of course...that's right.
I wish you wonderful holidays
Love the saw in the Swisstool, it can easily strike a ferro rod or scrape stuff. But for fixed blades i used a rough diamond sharpener to get a 90 degree angle, even my daily carry knife has this because it is indeed very useful:)
Wow, I actually did get chicken skin when I saw the knife tip go against the grinder! Love your videos Felix but that might be a little dangerous for us viewers.
Oh Great! AnotherFelix video!! Always good to see you Felix, always I learn something from you. Thank you. Have a great Christmas with your family. See you in 2024. Les in UK 🇬🇧
Thank you very much! i wish you the same!
Eyes cuts me tongue on a knife wit a sharp spine.
I dont understand your comment, sorry.
Hoi Felix, does this method also work for blued blades of the evoke?
(still debating if i should give this treatment to the knife-blades of my SAKs tbh ;)
??… I don’t understand… in drawing 4 of the final burr, the transition from the 90degree flat spine into the bur rolling back is making the edge rounded… how can it result in being sharper ??
Man, it took so much time to undo the round spine on my Trailmaster. It's called a Trailmaster but you can't use the fixed blade to light a fire.
Yes i blive... that was a lot of work...
Nice job on the burr demo - one of the best I have seen. Have you done a clip on how to make leather lacing? An old trapper trick was to stick the knife in a block of wood, put a hole in a scrap piece of leather or hide, start a little piece and pull - the leather rotates around the blade and you can pull off a long, even piece of leather - good for repairing traditional rawhide snowshoes or just making lacing for whatever task you need.
Excellent as always. btw you'll find almost every wood type, even green shaved with a carpenters scraper or your new spines will take a flame from a firesteel.
Thanks a lot for this great idea!
Hi Felix, which of your videos shows installing a fire steel rod under the saw of a Huntsman or Fieldmaster. I can't find it. Thanks
Dude had a Scandie knife. Not as good as you make them out to be. Lots of things you showed I really will never do and see no reason to do. And lots my blade can do better. Just sayin Amego. But nice video for beginners
Thanks for this video! I am going to try to put a 90 degree spine on my Svord Peasant Mini with a simple file so I can use it with a ferro rod.
Felix, I'm looking forward to all the new videos of next year. Extremely enjoyable, always fun, and very informative!!!
Thanks a lot for this wonderful compliment!
Great video Felix, thank you for sharing all your videos this year. I wish you and your family a happy Christmas
Thank you very much. I wish you the same!
Is Victorinox going to beef up the geometry on the Venture so it no longer deforms the edge and primary bevel when batoning?
Thank you.
Happy Christmas Felix from northern Sweden and thank you for a great year of videos and look forward to 2024 with Felix Immler. All the best mate.
Thank you very much for this wonderful compliment!
I've got the Morakniv Garberg, which has a carbon steel blade and is flat ground. I also have several of the lower end Morakniv blades and they are definitely stamped out and without a flat ground spine!!!--will have to tweak those on my Ken Onion Worksharp!!! Interestingly, the burnishers used for honing the burr on card scrapers are made out of tungsten metal and are MUCH harder than the steel of the card scraper! Thanks Again for the Great Video Felix and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 🎄🎄🎄
Thanks a lot for your super interesting comment!
🤔 so this new victorinox knife has same steel as mora knives.... why wouldn't i buy an fallkniven in vg10 and go with that
Excellent video, l would like to do this to the under side of the finger nail file on my Victorinox. That way, the sharp edge is always folded into the handle. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
This is a fantastic idea!
Here, learn to self-immolate and other useless ways to not use shit properly. Oh, and forget using that knife like it was intended too! I bet you wired all the electrical in your house too.
Hey Felix?
Can you BATON with these knives?
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
I wish you the same...thank you!
Hello Felix! I use mora and Casstrom knifes in the field.I like the sharp spine.
Marry Christmas and a super sharp year rom Romania🎉🎉🎉
Super! Try to tress a burr on this spines. You will see, they are 10% sharper after... of course just if you want.
Hey felix i have a suggestion for a bushcraft project, I think it would be cool to see you make a guitar hook that mounts onto a wall, there are lots on Google to see.
