Vivian Balakrishnan objects to the characterisation of PAP Govt engaging in half truths

- Dr Vivian Balakrishnan stood to object to comments made by Leader of the Opposition, Pritam Singh, accusing the People's Action Party (PAP) of engaging in half-truths on matters of significant public interest.
Mr Singh had stated, "...this behavior goes a long way to explain why there is real disquiet among Singaporeans today when the PAP invokes the memory of pioneer generation peer leaders and talks about trust."
The Foreign Affairs Minister, in response to the mention of the TraceTogether (TT) data being used by the Singapore Police Force, said he had "never deliberately engaged in any obfuscation, prevarication or delay."
"I have tried to make sure that in the design, execution, and coordination of a complex matter, in any emergency, I have been transparent and forthright with the people. I object to your characterization and use of this debate in Parliament to suggest that there is a pattern of delay, prevarication, and obfuscation," Dr Balakrishnan added.
Mr Singh countered by asking Dr Balakrishnan when he discovered that his statement, that TT is solely used for contact tracing, was going to be affected by the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).
He went on to state that the point is there were ministers in the House who knew they were already in receipt of knowledge in October 2020 about the fact that TraceTogether applied to the CPC.
Reiterating the previous points he made, Dr Balakrishnan stood to object to Mr. Singh's points, which he claimed insinuated that there was any undue delay or any attempt at obfuscation or lack of transparency.
Mr K. Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Law, also joined in the exchange by asking Mr Singh if he was insinuating that the Minister had deliberately kept quiet.
Mr Singh responded with a question, "Did the minister or anybody in MHA ring the bell in government to say, actually, section 20 of the CPC applies to TraceTogether well before 2020?"
Both Dr Balakrishnan and Mr Shanmugam did not stand to respond to Mr Singh's question.
I am apolitical, but PS is a real talent. This is the caliber that is much needed.
This debate shows that we need more quality Opp to monitor the government. Too much trust has been lost due to the government's missteps.

It seems so coincidental that two Indian ministers stayed in the same area and both wives signed the lease.

Of late I have been watching the Singapore Parliamentary debates and I observe an increasingly disgusting trend - parliamentarians arguing for the sake of argument with no tangible substance especially by members of PAP, simply to put one over the Opposition. This is so disruptive and sometimes disgusting. Why?
Parliament is not about petty debates like in debating competitions or coffee shops. Some friends observe a particular racial group of parliamentarians more inclined or apt to doing this. I do not want to be POFMAed or be labeled racists so I stop here. This group feels that they must win the arguments at all cost and so we have many unnecessary call for apologies, COP etc.
There is another unhealthy drift - bringing matter best settled in the courts to be whitewashed in Parliament. This unhealthy trend must be halted and prevented. May I remind parliamentarians that their role is to debate proposals regarding legislation before voting on resolutions which become laws.
The government need not be reminded that there is still disquiet amongst Singaporeans over the 38 Oxley Road matter being brought to Parliament instead of the court. There is also disquiet over the handling of the Ridout Road bungalows and the dismissal of the Speaker of Parliament. Many Singaporeans are keen observers of the politics theater here. They see and are aware of the ongoing claptrap.

TOC understands that Mrs Shanmugam, who works as a clinical psychologist, should have significantly less monthly income than what is required. On the other hand, Mrs Balakrishnan is publicly known to be a housewife.
This discrepancy raises questions: why were the ministers’ wives, who seemingly don’t meet the financial criteria, allowed to rent these properties?
Did the SLA consider the wives’ financial status sound because their husbands are Ministers, given that the SLA holds the sole discretion to assess based on the information and documents provided with the bid?
This scenario leads to another question: why didn’t SLA request the financially qualifying husbands to be the registered tenants instead of allowing the tenancy to be under the wives’ names?
And why didn’t the ministers bid under their names, given that they would be the ones who would financially qualify to bid?
Could the decision for the wives to bid be due to potential perception issues, particularly for Mr Shanmugam, who oversees the SLA as the Minister for Law?

a. Taking time to see if section 20 of the CPC really applies to the data, then think of solutions (whether to pass new laws to exempt Trace Together from s20) and then explain to the people what the problem was and the solution?

In this modern day of internet and social media, most people no longer rely on the mainstream media for news. So pls don’t think that the commoners can be hoodwinked. It's better to be transparent and fair, if opposition MPs ask for facts, it’s the duty of the gov to give and explain, bcos opposition MPs are also citizens, they represent us to ask questions, we need them to check, to make sure policies are discussed thoroughly, because we all have a stake in our country.
What we want to see is collaboration and mutual respect. Unfortunately sometimes the sessions were like a court hearing, interrogation session. It’s very painful to watch, which made us begin to hv more respect for the opposition MPs who persevered despite intimidation and threats of disciplinary actions.
I see despite the Nicole Seah & Leon perrra issues the Opposition in terms in parliament & Singaporean interest they are doing good job .. Vote in more oppositions more .. After ride out rd the Vivian n shanmugan are already need to be ride out of parliament in next election😂 my opinion
