A lifetime ago I covered the NBA for a big newspaper, and in '96 I followed Dream Team II around before they played in the Olympics. I sat in on quite a few practices and Mitch was the best player on the floor every time. It was eye-opening for me. I knew he was good, but not THAT good. Offense (inside and out), defense, rebounding, passing... the whole package. Dude was legit.
Richmond was an absolute dog. He’d be even better in the league today than he was back in the 90s. He was firing up 6 threes a game back in the 90s! Shooting 40%. And he was a guy who could create his own shot. He’d be bombing away with how open the league is now.
I sat down with Mitch after one of those practices and told him that I had no idea he was that good, especially on defense. He just laughed and said that he was such a key cog in the offense that the coaches (Sacto) had him dial back his D because they didn't want to risk foul trouble. The guy had an unbelievably broad skill set.
MJ does acknowledge about Mitch being one of the toughest guys to play against in his career.....MJ respects players like Mitch who goes out there and play hard at both ends.
Super underrated player in the 90s! He was an amazing shooter and so fun to watch. He never had a good supporting cast on the Kings though, otherwise, they woulda been great. Glad he won a title with LA before retiring.

Well he kinda chose to stick with a Kings squad that had no direction for most of his career. I still have no idea why the Warriors broke up run TMC. It was rumored that Miami was trying to get Mitch paired up with Tim Hardaway over there, but some how that fell through too.
I tell the younger generation about Mitch , how good he was. He's respected with his peers. He should of gotten way more accolades. Guarding the best guards and still able to score. Takes a lot to do that.
Mitch Richmond was a more complete player than Reggie Miller. If it weren't for Miller's heroics in the playoffs Richmond would be seen as a better player because in reality he WAS a better player.
Kobe was better than Jordan. For 1 reason: Kobe Bryant was a clutch 3 point shooter. Jordan, very rarely shot 3 pointers "in the clutch ". Kobe Bryant was deadly from anywhere in the clutch. There I said it. Prove me wrong.
I lived in Sacramento when Mitch was there. He was an awesome player and a good person. Never involved in scandal, doing charity works in the community and such. He more than earned the nickname "The Rock".

Mitch was an ABSOLUTE BEAST! I first saw him at K-State in a ncaa tournament game beat DePaul. That may have been his senior year. DePaul had Rod Strickland. K-State handled DePaul pretty good. Richmond showed out. I'd guess playing in the same conference with Danny Manning got him ready for the league. You gotta do a special on Rod Strickland. For all he did, he never was an all-star. Go figure. Shaq gave him huge praise and respect
I would think that Jordan would have enjoyed playing against Mitch, more than fear him. these games would have been Jordan's opportunities to focus more on a 1 v 1 type of performance.

this was the nba at its finest, i know everybody that was alive back in the 80s and 90s misses the glory days, Todays game is mostly a 3 point shooting contest, even the 7th guys are shooting more 3 pointers than 2 pters , i hated it when they started playing zone defence in the NBA, it made the game too easy for the PRO,S, and i hate the super team concept, lebron james may have never won the firs championship with out having to rely on other super star’s to help

One of the most underrated and unmentioned players ever. All-around game. Offense and defense. Fast or slow tempos. On the break or in the half court. Shooting threes or post up. Strong enough to muscle against a power forward.
Great interview! TH-cam already gives Reggie Lewis lots of credit for being one of the best on Jordan along with Dumars and now you gave Richmond his props. But please do one on Rolando Blackman's battles against Jordan. He not only gave Jordan trouble when with Dallas, but even in spot duty with the Knicks later. There's not much footage on it unfortunately but Rolondo had great feet and quick hands and even used a few little tricks like covering Jordan's eyes. While I believe the 96+ Jordan would've ate him alive due to his post game, he was a good matchup for the late 80s Jordan who often took people off the dribble.
While I agree there are some players who played Jordan better than others, the thing about Jordan is that he still outplayed all of them in head to head matchups. Much has been made about how Jordan had trouble with the Pistons for example but after doing a stat dive, I found out that between '87 and '91 when the Pistons supposedly had Jordan's number, Jordan still averaged like 35.6 points, 7 rebounds and 6.5 assists in 44 matchups, including playoffs. Even when the Pistons were consistently beating the Bulls they weren't stopping Jordan. A good example of that is game 7 of the '90 ECF. Jordan put up 31 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists on .481 shooting, as usual putting up the best numbers out of anyone in the game on either side. But the rest of the team went a combined 16 for 90 for 17%, including Pippen having probably the worst game of his career going 1 for 10 for 2 points. So as was usually the case, Jordan outplayed everybody but didn't get nearly enough help. Not sure about Blackman as I was unaware of how he fared against Jordan in h2h play but I know with Reggie Lewis, Jordan had some pretty gaudy numbers against the Celtics when Reggie was playing. I am aware of that 4-block game and beyond that, Jordan being held to .333 shooting in that one. Reggie became the Jordan slayer, for a night. But Reggie never blocked another of his shots again after that in 8 matchups. There were some isolated incidents of Jordan having genuine trouble against certain players. Like Gary Payton, who held Jordan to 36% shooting in the latter half of the '96 Finals even while Payton was suffering a fairly significant injury. But during the first head to head matchup in '96-97, Jordan put up 45 points on .679 shooting against him so it was never a sustained thing over a long period of time. If there was one player who truly had sustained success against Jordan for the most part, I'd have to say Dennis Johnson, in spite of the monster series Jordan had in '86. Bird was really the only one among all the elite players who could arguably make the claim of outplaying Jordan overall in h2h play based on the numbers. And it was Dennis Johnson tasked with guarding him so it was DJ who had as much to do with that as Bird himself did.
@@madcapper6 To give credit where it is due, Jordan was a great player, no question. The League did give him a lot of help that wasn't really fair to opposing teams, though. That said, I was never a Jordan fan. I was, and still am, a big fan of the Celtics and Bird during that era. I managed to watch almost every game the Celtics played, beginning around 1982, on TV. Dennis Johnson was pretty great, in his own right, especially in combination with Bird and other team mates. I was and am a fan of D.J. That said, when you made that statement about Dennis against Jordan, I was a bit surprised. As much as I liked Dennis, and didn't like Jordan, I don't remember seeing what you are talking about. I thought I might be wrong so I checked some stats. Jordan averaged 34.3 points, 5.4 assists, against the Celtics, and Dennis. Dennis averaged 13.6 points, 7.4 assists against Jordan and the Bulls. I will give that the 7.4 assists were of some value, but not earth shaking. Respectfully, the Celtics couldn't do much to even slow Jordan down, but they did to him what the old Celtics did to Wilt Chamberlain. They made the rest of the team try to beat them, which worked pretty well for them in both instances. Sorry, no ill feelings intended, but that is how I see it.
@@wmden1 There was really no way to prevent Jordan from getting his points. The only thing you could do was try and get him to miss shots when he was on a high volume night, which was pretty frequent, especially back in the days when DJ was playing. Those years from '87 to '91 were statistically the best years of Jordan's career. Although he could never do it all by himself when it came to winning championships (no one could, really), he was perfectly capable of carrying his team against anyone on a given night, and he often did. He couldn't do it though if he was shooting a low percentage from the field. He had to be more efficient than the other team was as a collective whole. So that's why he had a shot in Game 2 of the series in '86 when he scored 63. He shot .537 from the floor that night, which was well above what the Celtics were shooting as a team at .465. He had better efficiency to counter them with. It still wasn't enough of course but it damn near got them there. It's also why in '87 he didn't have a chance of doing that when he only shot .418 for the series. He was hurting them rather than helping, so in that sense, DJ did about as well as a person can. Didn't matter how many points Jordan was scoring, as long as he was failing 6 out of 10 times. In the "Celtics vs Jordan" game, the Celtics were winning that battle decisively and DJ had a lot to do with it. I didn't say DJ outplayed Jordan because Jordan rarely ever got outplayed by his matchup. But he neutralized him as a threat, regardless of how many points Jordan scored. Moncrief did pretty much the same thing in '85 when he gave up 29.3 points a game to Jordan but he held him to .429 shooting, well below his season average of .515 and the Bucks beat them in 4 as a result. That's probably about as close as it was ever going to get in shutting him down.

To try to keep it shorter; I don't remember seeing any Boston player doing a number on Jordan defensively, or consistently. Jordan burned them up, pretty regularly. I see it as Boston's excellent passing game, of which D.J., Bird, and Walton, the season he played healthy, were big parts of, being the key to Boston outscoring the Bulls, often just barely. Not even Jordan could outrun a passed ball.

While yes, you can do a stat dive but as someone who lived through those series and being a Jordan fan, I know firsthand those box score numbers the next day can be misleading. That whole "revenge" and "he took it personal" hype on social media especially after the last dance is widely referenced in TH-cam and social media clips. Many of the clips leave out the fact that his teams were on the losing end of many of those "revenge" games. Especially in the Detroit games, there are plenty of instances where he does a John Wayne act and shoots a very difficult shot when someone was wide open underneath or someone like Paxson was open. And then there's the whole part about him dominating the ball and then pass it off to a teammate last second in a spot where they normally don't shoot. Of course, he learns from all that later and plays very efficiently by 92. But before then, the whole emphasis on these matchups and wanting to "destroy" his counterpart was occasionally detrimental.
I was a big Mitch Richmond fan here from Germany. I remember buying NBA Live 95 or 96 just to play him. His team was so bad, I kept on losing a lot though. Good times
'RunTMC' was so much fun to watch. I'm a huge fan and loved watching the Bulls vs all the best teams. Mitch was a great scorer. Let's not forget he and Chris Mullin were on one of only three teams that had two players represented on the first Dream Teams USA basketball (Chicago, Utah and 'TMC').

Joe Dumars used to score all over MJ too !!! Dumars was cat-quick too,some games Mj has to guard those SPEEDY guards like Dumars,because they were killing Paxson,BJ Armstrong,etc,etc !!!! LOL. They were TOO quick for the Bulls guards. I remember in one series in the playoffs against the Pacers,MJ had to guard Travis Best ( a Pacers guard, 5 ft-10 inches,I think ) because he was destroying the Bull's guard. Travis gave MJ fits,but,in Jordan's defense he shouldn't had to defend point guards,but,he did it to win the games.

Parents had season tickets to the Kings, back in the day, so I got to go to a lot of games. Nothing like seeing a guy like Mitch Richmond in real life. Jordan is not the greatest of all time. He is the best shooting guard to date but not the greatest in the sport. Micheal Jordan marketing was the greatest of all time! That's a good showing for Iverson but gotta remember too that was late in Jordan's career including his years as a Wizard while Iverson was in his prime. During Jordan's years with the Wizards Iverson was probably the better player.
Mitch could ball out and all due respect, but MJ didn't fear anyone one the court!!!! If anything I'd say Mike looked forward to playing Mitch. Someone who made him work and gave him some much needed competition. Mike would get 😴 bored playing against so many guys he could just dominate so I have no doubt he looked forward to the few times a season he could play Someone like Mitch. Just my opinion.

Hearing this interview reminds me what a stand-up, class guy Mitch was & still is!!! The big thing Nelly could do was draft. Man could that guy could recognize talent!

this was the nba at its finest, i know everybody that was alive back in the 80s and 90s misses the glory days, Todays game is mostly a 3 point shooting contest, even the 7th guys are shooting more 3 pointers than 2 pters , i hated it when they started playing zone defence in the NBA, it made the game too easy for the PRO,S, and i hate the super team concept, lebron james may have never won the firs championship with out having to rely on other super star’s to help

One of the most underrated and unmentioned players ever. All-around game. Offense and defense. Fast or slow tempos. On the break or in the half court. Shooting threes or post up. Strong enough to muscle against a power forward.
Great interview! TH-cam already gives Reggie Lewis lots of credit for being one of the best on Jordan along with Dumars and now you gave Richmond his props. But please do one on Rolando Blackman's battles against Jordan. He not only gave Jordan trouble when with Dallas, but even in spot duty with the Knicks later.
There's not much footage on it unfortunately but Rolondo had great feet and quick hands and even used a few little tricks like covering Jordan's eyes. While I believe the 96+ Jordan would've ate him alive due to his post game, he was a good matchup for the late 80s Jordan who often took people off the dribble.
While I agree there are some players who played Jordan better than others, the thing about Jordan is that he still outplayed all of them in head to head matchups. Much has been made about how Jordan had trouble with the Pistons for example but after doing a stat dive, I found out that between '87 and '91 when the Pistons supposedly had Jordan's number, Jordan still averaged like 35.6 points, 7 rebounds and 6.5 assists in 44 matchups, including playoffs. Even when the Pistons were consistently beating the Bulls they weren't stopping Jordan. A good example of that is game 7 of the '90 ECF. Jordan put up 31 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists on .481 shooting, as usual putting up the best numbers out of anyone in the game on either side. But the rest of the team went a combined 16 for 90 for 17%, including Pippen having probably the worst game of his career going 1 for 10 for 2 points. So as was usually the case, Jordan outplayed everybody but didn't get nearly enough help.
Not sure about Blackman as I was unaware of how he fared against Jordan in h2h play but I know with Reggie Lewis, Jordan had some pretty gaudy numbers against the Celtics when Reggie was playing. I am aware of that 4-block game and beyond that, Jordan being held to .333 shooting in that one. Reggie became the Jordan slayer, for a night. But Reggie never blocked another of his shots again after that in 8 matchups.
There were some isolated incidents of Jordan having genuine trouble against certain players. Like Gary Payton, who held Jordan to 36% shooting in the latter half of the '96 Finals even while Payton was suffering a fairly significant injury. But during the first head to head matchup in '96-97, Jordan put up 45 points on .679 shooting against him so it was never a sustained thing over a long period of time.
If there was one player who truly had sustained success against Jordan for the most part, I'd have to say Dennis Johnson, in spite of the monster series Jordan had in '86. Bird was really the only one among all the elite players who could arguably make the claim of outplaying Jordan overall in h2h play based on the numbers. And it was Dennis Johnson tasked with guarding him so it was DJ who had as much to do with that as Bird himself did.
@@madcapper6 To give credit where it is due, Jordan was a great player, no question. The League did give him a lot of help that wasn't really fair to opposing teams, though. That said, I was never a Jordan fan. I was, and still am, a big fan of the Celtics and Bird during that era. I managed to watch almost every game the Celtics played, beginning around 1982, on TV. Dennis Johnson was pretty great, in his own right, especially in combination with Bird and other team mates. I was and am a fan of D.J. That said, when you made that statement about Dennis against Jordan, I was a bit surprised. As much as I liked Dennis, and didn't like Jordan, I don't remember seeing what you are talking about. I thought I might be wrong so I checked some stats. Jordan averaged 34.3 points, 5.4 assists, against the Celtics, and Dennis. Dennis averaged 13.6 points, 7.4 assists against Jordan and the Bulls. I will give that the 7.4 assists were of some value, but not earth shaking. Respectfully, the Celtics couldn't do much to even slow Jordan down, but they did to him what the old Celtics did to Wilt Chamberlain. They made the rest of the team try to beat them, which worked pretty well for them in both instances. Sorry, no ill feelings intended, but that is how I see it.
@@wmden1 There was really no way to prevent Jordan from getting his points. The only thing you could do was try and get him to miss shots when he was on a high volume night, which was pretty frequent, especially back in the days when DJ was playing. Those years from '87 to '91 were statistically the best years of Jordan's career. Although he could never do it all by himself when it came to winning championships (no one could, really), he was perfectly capable of carrying his team against anyone on a given night, and he often did. He couldn't do it though if he was shooting a low percentage from the field. He had to be more efficient than the other team was as a collective whole. So that's why he had a shot in Game 2 of the series in '86 when he scored 63. He shot .537 from the floor that night, which was well above what the Celtics were shooting as a team at .465. He had better efficiency to counter them with. It still wasn't enough of course but it damn near got them there. It's also why in '87 he didn't have a chance of doing that when he only shot .418 for the series. He was hurting them rather than helping, so in that sense, DJ did about as well as a person can. Didn't matter how many points Jordan was scoring, as long as he was failing 6 out of 10 times. In the "Celtics vs Jordan" game, the Celtics were winning that battle decisively and DJ had a lot to do with it. I didn't say DJ outplayed Jordan because Jordan rarely ever got outplayed by his matchup. But he neutralized him as a threat, regardless of how many points Jordan scored.
Moncrief did pretty much the same thing in '85 when he gave up 29.3 points a game to Jordan but he held him to .429 shooting, well below his season average of .515 and the Bucks beat them in 4 as a result.
That's probably about as close as it was ever going to get in shutting him down.
@@madcapper6 I respect your opinion, and believe we think alike, in a lot of ways. You see something I don't see, and I might be missing. To try to keep it shorter; I don't remember seeing any Boston player doing a number on Jordan defensively, or consistently. Jordan burned them up, pretty regularly. I see it as Boston's excellent passing game, of which D.J., Bird, and Walton, the season he played healthy, were big parts of, being the key to Boston outscoring the Bulls, often just barely. Not even Jordan could outrun a passed ball.
@@madcapper6 good points. While yes, you can do a stat dive but as someone who lived through those series and being a Jordan fan, I know firsthand those box score numbers the next day can be misleading.
That whole "revenge" and "he took it personal" hype on social media especially after the last dance is widely referenced in TH-cam and social media clips. Many of the clips leave out the fact that his teams were on the losing end of many of those "revenge" games.
Especially in the Detroit games, there are plenty of instances where he does a John Wayne act and shoots a very difficult shot when someone was wide open underneath or someone like Paxson was open. And then there's the whole part about him dominating the ball and then pass it off to a teammate last second in a spot where they normally don't shoot.
Of course, he learns from all that later and plays very efficiently by 92. But before then, the whole emphasis on these matchups and wanting to "destroy" his counterpart was occasionally detrimental.
Mitch Richmond, I salute you. Great career, awesome moments, highlights. Always the fan of 90's basketball style (the toughest one). Respect.
I was a big Mitch Richmond fan here from Germany. I remember buying NBA Live 95 or 96 just to play him. His team was so bad, I kept on losing a lot though. Good times

'RunTMC' was so much fun to watch. I'm a huge fan and loved watching the Bulls vs all the best teams. Mitch was a great scorer. Let's not forget he and Chris Mullin were on one of only three teams that had two players represented on the first Dream Teams USA basketball (Chicago, Utah and 'TMC').

Joe Dumars used to score all over MJ too !!! Dumars was cat-quick too,some games Mj has to guard those SPEEDY guards like Dumars,because they were killing Paxson,BJ Armstrong,etc,etc !!!! LOL. They were TOO quick for the Bulls guards. I remember in one series in the playoffs against the Pacers,MJ had to guard Travis Best ( a Pacers guard, 5 ft-10 inches,I think ) because he was destroying the Bull's guard. Travis gave MJ fits,but,in Jordan's defense he shouldn't had to defend point guards,but,he did it to win the games.

Allen Iverson averaged 29 points against Jordan's teams, Jordan just averaged 23 against Allen's teams.
That's a good showing for Iverson but gotta remember too that was late in Jordan's career including his years as a Wizard while Iverson was in his prime. During Jordan's years with the Wizards Iverson was probably the better player.
