Michelle, you are just precious and your channel is my absolute favorite. Your gardening style is not only beautiful, informative and inspirational, but also everything you do is within anyone's budget. You're totally down to earth and you keep it real. Thank you so much for everything you do! Hugs from Green Bay 🙂
Wow, fantastic viewer garden pics and questions! I forgot to mention that I garden in a new microclimate of zone 5 in Gaylord, MN. I used to be zone 4b. I sent in the collage of my front garden with the Ivy Heart with pink Impatiens. 💗💚💗Christine N.
That barn and story 😍 to be able to find all the historic pieces and tools etc. What a wonderful place. And that Weeping Norway Spruce is so amazing and gorgeous 😍😊
The weeping Norway spruce with the upturned arms can be redirected but securing weights to the branches to train it to grow downward. I too wouldn’t prune it. Good luck! Michelle I sooo enjoy your channel. I’ve learned so much from you. Great music too.
Thank you so much for the advice!! ❤ I'm going to hang rocks in macrame hangings to weigh down both tall branches. I'll have to keep them there for over a year I'm guessing. Brilliant.
@@gardeningTLCThanks for including my photo in your video. Weighing down the branches is a brilliant idea and I'm totally getting on a ladder tomorrow to get it done. ❤
Thank you for answering my question Michelle I was so surprised to hear my name. I saw all the videos you talked about with the cardboard gardening and everything looks so good. What a great start for next year. I love your channel and share it all the time. Keep up the great work its such fun! Much love.
Aaahhh! Thank you for sharing my garden photo! You have helped me learn so much about how to garden successfully. Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge! Blessings!
You have so much knowledge and I appreciate it so much. About 18:31, you asked what the plant was on the left. I believe you mean the Red Banana. I used to have them and their very interesting plants. My neighbor from Hawaii would ask for leaves to cook with. They send out pups during the summer and a few times, I had a flower and bananas. The bananas never matured enough to eat.
The spirit bear ranch picture is beautiful. I just recently traveled through that area. It’s absolutely beautiful and I love the flowers in this foreground.
I was so ready to ease up on garden maintenance, but we haven't had any rain in about 5 weeks since hurricane helene dumped 5 inches on us, and fall moisture is crucial. Still planting clearance plants though. Love garden gab!
Not the platform for politics...its gardening...dont care if it's religiously natured, or yours, mine, our love of the USA...I believe this channel is about an encompassing love of gardening...
Wow! Michelle, thank you for your knowledge and enthusiasm for gardening, when will you write a book? Why? Because so many gardening books are so, well, didactic which makes for dry reading. Why does a gardener, beginner to master, love to garden in the first place? What are people searching for? (Other than having a photo of their garden featured on Garden Gab!😊). Anyway, perhaps the newsletter may provide the readers with an opportunity to explore this more esoteric aspect of gardening. Thank you for showing my humble photo from Spirit Bear Ranch, what an honor! DeLoss
Ohio, WV, and KY in terrible drought and plants, flowers, trees are suffering--it's sad and frustrating. Water bills are increasing as we water our plants to save them. Thanks for your interesting information!
You keep knocking on wood to keep those deer away. I have a herd hat comes from the adjacent open space(220 ac.). I use espoma starter fertilizer in my planter’s with elephant ears or growth. Good gab!
I’m so excited to have found your channel. Looking forward to binge watching all your content this winter with my 2025 calendar and making notes. I am also in old 5b and you have so many suggestions that will work for us. Thank you for all your efforts and expertise.
Yes to more color! We had only brown oak leaves and cedars-ehh! I’ve since added Blaze maples and redbuds (Flamethrower 🤩🥳). I have to check the name again on our maples as they are fire red-wonder if it’s the PH doing that? All I know is it’s really WOW when the evening sun hits it!🎉 We have to put wire cages around young trees as bucks rub horns around here. 😂😂😂I just made this comment and you mentioned this same problem from a viewer😂😂😂. I am so going to get some areas card boarded and barked for future planting. I planted the blackeyed Susan vine and it didn’t take off till almost frost and Always was crawling on the ground. I planted them in several different light situations and they didn’t like full sun, but definitely like growing into pole beans, maybe because it told them they were to climb not crawl😂. It just wouldn’t take off and I started them inside. I’m in WI and the viewer pic was from IA and they must have a bit longer growing season. I’m finding that we need a longer season with many flowers in Z5a. You have SO much to do and still find time to entertain and educate us🎉. It’s no wonder it took so long to get to the shed😂. All nice pics and ideas-Thank You!
Also wanted to suggest getting a handheld sprayer for the she-shed, it will come in handy with other projects too...bah-leave- me!!!....you thought the battery operated clippers were handy...!😂...perhaps mentioning it could get you a sponser, or a freebie....... ;) ,idk, companies get influencers to feature products..
I have done nothing this year but battle pests, I lost $150 in plants in the spring, then again over the growing season, first it was pill bugs, then grubs and voles, then moles and squirrels and now I have a family of pack rats and rabbits, who are eating my newly planted hydrangea's,. I've spent a fortune on pest controls instead of plants, I'm not sure why this year pests have been so bad.... But I can't wait for the hard freeze, I'm disgusted and over it for this year.. lol
Wow, I'd be done, too, Kelly! We put chicken wire around our new shrubs to protect them from critters, especially rabbits. I hear you can plant perennials and shrubs in chicken wire baskets underground for voles, gophers, etc.
@@rosemarythyme6351 I bought some of that wire mesh that goes around root balls before you plant from Amazon that has helped immensely with the root eaters, and Seven got rid of the bugs... but I had 5 squirrels that just had litters of 4 and now I have 25 squirrels that are just bulldozing threw everything including wire cages, leaving it exposed to the pack rats and rabbits, I really don't want to use poisons or traps.. but my flower gardens are being annihilated.. hopefully a winter of controls will give me better luck next spring.. 😔
Well…when we bought this place we had a field of gophers. We soon learned they couldn’t resist celery leaf on a rat trap and caught 50 the first year. I use Milky Spore on the yard (worked for about 10 years) and that took care of moles and Juicy Fruit gum in their tunnels-it works. We’ve only briefly seen One woodchuck and it’s gone somewhere. We have to fence EVERYTHING or we would have nothing. It’s horrible to have to view the landscape through 7’ fencing, but necessary and it’s not easy to work around as the deer use our property as a run to water. After over a decade and my whole life I have never had VOLES 🤬 till this year-they are the worst! They have voracious appetites especially for spring bulbs. Where they ever came from-they can Go Back! The trouble with them is there is too much to eat that they don’t look at peanut butter on traps. It worked in the spring as we caught Two in one rat trap at once and maybe because not much was growing yet. When you go out to the garden and see certain plants shaved down you know you have voles and their holes and above ground tunnels in snow. Maybe I can get rid of them this winter. Can’t use poison as it’s the veg garden and I don’t like using that anyway. And I agree with the high animal pressure this year and couldn’t understand it because we had a huge amount of rain all summer and it was worse than drought last year. I just need to get creative with fencing and choose larger sections to quarantine the landscape areas so I can work easier and enjoy the view better. 😂the ferrel cats didn’t like the poultry wire along property line as they bounced off it 😂😂. -It’s a battle!
There are two bushes in the left fore ground. First is a type of barberry and next to it very close is a Albelia. No tag on those. So I don’t know the variety. I can take a close up if you’d like.
Michelle, Regarding Northern lights - We are in a cycle of increased solar activity so there may be more opportunities to see the lights this year & next. I follow some Aurora borealis sites on FaceBook & some Illinois weather sites to get info about when there is a chance to see them. Do you know to use your cell phone camera to take a picture of the sky? Sometimes the camera picks up color you can barely see with your eyes. I've seen the lights a couple times this season from my backyard in Elgin, IL. Good luck.
Beautiful garden pics by the viewers and yours as well. QUESTION: Are any of your newly planted Arborvitae turning brown? Are they on irrigation? I just planted Emerald Green in Sept (4 weeks ago) and needles are turning brown which concerns me. I manually water deeply every 3 days since we've been in a drought. Could I use an Arborist fertilizer or is it too late in season? Do you recommend using burlap or Wilt-stop in the winter?

Interesting to see how plants are faring in different places. You always make it easier to construe.
I love the character/night tree! It would be a great conversation piece, so unusual. I might hang a face on it for Halloween!

Mine have a smidgen of brown. Look close and see if the brown is the berries. I would use wilt stop and water until the ground freezes.
Oh and I would NOT fertilize until spring.
