I really enjoyed this, Michelle. I’m not sure where to ask a question, but I would LOVE to see a video on how to landscape next to chain link fencing. My backyard is outlined with it, separating my backyard from my neighbors’ yards. I am not able to replace the fencing and, while I’m not concerned about a privacy screen, as we like all of our neighbors, I would love to soften it with plants. Any insights you could provide would be greatly appreciated! I’m not sure it matters for this question but I’m in zone 5b and my backyard is full sun. Thanks so much! Thanks for this. I have started trying to add plants to that stretch that I have. The plants you listed today could definitely help me fill in the space. Question I have is, how much is too much flowers. I have a similar situation like the first lady you went over. The space is about 2 ft wide, but is about 58 ft long. On drip irrigation, full sun and is frequently visited by deer and rabbits. Do deer eat balsam Camelia ?? That is what I was planning on putting out there are a filler. I love the sedum idea. They are my daisy and Mexican petunia down to ground. I have moved them for this year. I have blanket flowers I wanted to put out there too. I have foxglove already out there. And some small surviving salvia plants I transplanted. 😂. I wanted to put echinacea out there too, you know the things that I don't want to have to replant every year. With a 58 ft long x 2 ft deep line to fill, these are my ideas but i want it to look full and be full, so i dont have to pull so much grass in this zone 7b SC heat!😅 I'm definitely taking notes.
I do think you can have too many flowers if they are just a jumbled mess. I have done it and for me I just don't like it...it's just too wild for my taste. I think quantity over variety just always looks better. For long narrow beds I think repeating a pattern is visually more appealing. Granted these are just my opinions. I'm sorry, I don't know about the Camelia, as I cannot grow that where I live.

I am in zone 5 i am pretty much like your first problem child here, but my bed is probably 40 ft long but a good 5ft wide, full sun after 10a till 4p, sitting right in my front yard on its own. it separates my full yard by half. but lots of water in the springtime and then very dry rest of the season. I am trying to incorporate winter interest with some shrubs but not so tall and wide.and your 4 fav colors. I love how your mix the blues,yellows ,greens. little bit of red i have put in a few blue star junipers throughout and a gold cone juniper on one end. tiger eye sumac on other end, i also put in a red twig dogwood in the middle. I have alot of day Lillys thru out. mostly yellows taller ones, big red hibicus. i would appreciate any other ideas. i want it to look not to crazy! thanks so much Genie :)

Thanks so much for the well information. Question, how far away can you plant Japanese maples? Their root systems aren’t invasive from what I’ve read. I only use organic fertilizer from espoma and no pesticides. The well is only used on the outdoor faucets as I have city water in the house. I’m lucky to have no limitations on water!!!
In this clip, you mentioned that that was a well in her backyard, and you said cistern, or could it have been a riser for your septic tank? It sure looks like mine in the backyard and mine is a riser or for septic tank.

I would call around and find out who does them in your area and how much they cost...other wise you can use graph paper and circles. You don't have to know how to draw.

We have a perfectly square patio at the back of our house, and I’d like to put a garden bed in around the edge of the patio. In your opinion, would a curved bed look better than one that follows the square pattern?

I'm guessing so! Our tanks (4) lead to a septic field then to the mound. We tried a native planting on the mound. Unfortunately it led to its demise and needed to be replaced. Ugh! Just grass over the septic field and mound now. I have shallow rooted plants by the tanks....it is just not pretty and i would like to rework it. Michelle's ideas have me thinking! They are doable!

No Septic fields are different. And I will be addressing that question in a future WWMD video. That one has come up quite a bit as a challenge.
