You know, here are two things about hyenas that make me think a lot more than I probably should :
- the hyenas only followed Scar by hunger... from his whole speech the only part that matters to them is food, and I wouldn’t count that as plain stupidity because :
- they look famished. Just think about it for a second. Where did Mufasa take in count the hyenas in the cycle of life? I mean, sure, natural ennemies. But we’re talking of talkings lions interacting with talking herbivores, so I think that’s beside the point.
The hyenas were always shoved away from the lions’ great plains simply by their birth. They didn’t choose to be born hyenas, why can’t they eat like the other animals?
So Disney is either telling kids that some people are born evil (predestination and shit), either that social injustice is normal. After all, these peasants living in famine are just a threat. And the remake made it look even worse...
Don’t get me wrong, I love the classic, it’s by far one of my favorite films if not my favorite, but this makes me think too much before going to sleep 🧐
That's what I was thinking, I dont think the hyenas are stupid, I think they're desperate.
Think about it, ALL hyenas live in what is essentially a wasteland with no food, little water, or protection. If they are as starved as they are in the movies then that means that not only do the adults suffer but so do the kids that are born there. And if your in a poor environment with barely anything to sustain yourself, kids, or family then you (and others around you) are bound to start suffering from physical or mental issues (which might be why some hyenas are quote on quote "stupid").
Plus, does anyone actually remember seeing teenage or child hyena in the movies? No? Then that means that most likely lives for hyenas are short and the adult hyenas that have made it probably are suffering from lots of issues or have watched their own children pass away (or even end it all). So yeah, the hyenas basically have short miserable lives where they suffer from simply being born the species they are.
And I dont think it's ever really explained as to why (don't quote me on this I haven't seen all the movies) but even if they're was a reason condemning all hyenas to a fate worse then death because one hyena caused trouble a long time ago isn't a good excuse. Future generations of hyenas don't deserve to suffer for that and shouldn't in any capacity for something they didn't do. Personally, I think something happened in the past that made lions and hyenas hate each other and eventually got hyenas to suffer from it. Now I don't know what it could have been, maybe an argument or rumor about the hyenas got way out of control or something but I guess we'll never know.
Edit: Also, if the hyenas suffer from mental illnesses or simply from emotional trauma due to their horrible lives. Who's to say that they're laughter isn't a coping mechanism or an unfortunate habit/symptom they gained due to their mental illness.
Well If we look from a nature standpoint, hyenas are both extremely violent and scavengers. Who's to say mufasa even knew that the hyenas were suffering. Natural scavengers usually eat only the remains or already dead animals, so Mufasa likely believed they had food out in the wastelands. Hell, there's an elephant graveyard where they live. Maybe Mufasa was just blind to their conditions and thought that they were fine.

Lions are more likely to scavange and steal kills. while Hyenas actually are real hunters so yeah no lion king got it very wrong. love the movies but Hyenas are superior to lions when it comes to hunting.

It's because Irons couldn't hit the high note so Cummings did that last 3rd (they actually had him do the whole song, but for some reason they just left in that 3rd part for the movie)

You know, I've seen quite a few be prepared covers, including some relatively big names like peter hollens and jonathan young, but still I think this is my favourite. No cuts, no needless additions, just taking the original and enhancing it. And doing a kickass job at that. Love it.

The whole thing is awesome, hands down, but like... the melody of the voices of the hyenas when they sing "We'll have food, endless food; we repeat, endless meat!" is like one of my favorite backup singer parts. Them keeping the dynamics of the hyenas in the song is amazing??! Also, hearing Ed's laughter going back and forth through headphones is the best subtle thing ever.
Not to forget Scar's tones? Like SO EXPRESSIVE! Love it so much and I lost track of how many times I listened to this now...

If you wanted this to be truly faithful, Darby should have thrown his voice out, and had someone else finish the song.
Seriously though, this is the best cover I've ever heard, and I now have this on loop to rid my mind of the horror show that the remake gave us

Also, I love the idea of the hyenas being like post-apocalyptic biker gang members, like in the artwork here.
This is great. Tom, Cami, and Alex (and steel) make good hyenas, and Darby as Scar (Scarby?) is awesome. Plus the art is not only great, but scary, with the spikes and teeth and jackets.
I guess we need to prepare, cause Darby and the rest of the Internet hyenas are gonna wreck some stuff up.
