I lost my abuelita to covid its been a hard 2 years. We used to make pasteles together when I was a kid but I kind of forgot the wrapping process. Thanks for the video. Now my family doesn't have to miss an amazing traditional meal
Just made my traditional yuca pasteles yesterday wish I would’ve seen your video before so I could’ve used your wrapping method, it’s genius & definitely the easiest way I’ve ever seen! Also I had seen the yuca masa in the store but didn’t trust it so I grated my yuca, but seeing you use pre-grated yuca gives me the green light to use it the next time I make them! Thank You !!!
Hi Jo, I am so glad you made this video. I saw those bags of yuca in the super market and wasn't sure if it was a good idea to purchase. I going back tomorrow and buying a few bags because your pasteles came out beautiful. Dios los bendiga. ❤🙏🏼
Thank you for this great video , my husband is Puerto Rican and I'm Italian . His Mom wasn't the best cook . I had some PR girlfriends show me how to make certain dishes for my husband but never how to make pasteles, great tips!
I made them for thanksgiving and they came out beautiful a little big to be honest I should of made it smaller but my grandma was so proud it made me so happy thank you so much ❤️❤️🫶
Joe thank you thank you thank you for being the only video that uses the already ready yucca massa... Hello not everybody has time to sit there and peel and cut and cook😀 Aint no shame in your game, thank you thank you thank you Joe. Love your videos keep up the good work and don't let nobody hate onobody hate on you you guys are awesome
I live in AZ and that dough isn't sold locally. But I used 6Lbs of partially boiled Yuca and 4.5 cups of water besides all the other ingredients in this recipe. It worked like a charm! The Masa looked wonderful. Thanks! I did not find the masa ingredients for the traditional pasteles, so Yuca was a a tasty alternative!
Your method looks so easy. I'll be experimenting next week. My wife likes empanadas (yuca pasteles that's cook in the oven). Substituting aluminum paper for the parchment paper can I use this recipe? Thanks keep cooking!
Oh yes, empanadas are awesome. We are actually putting out that video next week but we use the same recipe with the aluminum foil like you said so you should be totally fine!!
I just stumbled on to your channel and I am so happy I did. The last of my family members who made pasteles are gone and your Video gave me hope that I may just be able to pull off trying to make them myself. Thank you so much for posting and happy happy holidays.
Hi Alice, so glad you found us! I'm sorry to hear about your family members, but I have the utmost confidence that you'll be able to make some pasteles. And the great thing about food is that it has a way of really reaching into our memories and reminding us of the great times we've had in the past. And that's my holiday wish for you! Feliz Navidad! 🎄❄️🤗
Hi new to this channel. My sis from another mother just turned me on to you both. Thank you 😊. Last winter mom and I made Pasteles de Yuca using fresh Yuca. It took us 9 hours from start to finish. Peeling, deveining the yuca was not fun. We made 80 of them. It was too much work. Looking forward to getting to the supermarket to look for the frozen masa and making a small batch next week. Thanks for showing a faster way of making them. Feliz Navidad 🎄
Yay, thanks for joining us! 🤗 And wow! You made ALOT of pasteles! Thats awesome. But yeah, frozen masa can really simplify the whole project and makes small batches way more manageable. Good luck! 🙌
Hey there! Why don’t you try a vegetarian meat substitute instead. We have a video for how to prepare that for pasteles here: th-cam.com/video/sstBFOq6hZ0/w-d-xo.html Using fish or seafood it’s not something we have seen or try
First thank you for the recipe. I’ve never tasted this before. I’m trying my hand on it to make it. No I’m from Sacramento California and we don’t have a lot of Puerto Rican food here. I hunted down the Yucca grated in anAsian store. I have all my ingredients. What size is the parchment paper to wrap the Yucca pasteles ?
I finished making 16 Pasteles de yuca. They are superb! My pastels are 9” long. What size size are yours? I couldn’t tell by the video. I will help to if put something in comparable size.
so... bought a tub of Goya sofrito and instead of being green, its red. does this make a difference? also mine seems more 'watery' than what you seem to use.
Sometimes the sofrito will be red because they use red peppers (vs green) but it should be fine. The watery-ness shouldn't be a problem, you just need to cook it a little bit longer, in order to boil all the water off. Good luck!
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen thanks. that works out even better as my wife has problems with green peppers. appreciate you responding on xmas. hope you had a good one
made my first batch. first time ever eating pasteles de yuca. do you find that the yuca is gritty... almost like tapioca? mine did not come out smooth as the ones made traditionally with grn banana and taro and plantain. appreciate your responses and help...
Rob - doubt your mom and aunt were using the pre-made dough, for that it helps with the texture. Completely agree that if making from scratch don’t need the shortening.

This is an interesting recipe. Will it have same texture or quality if steamed not boiled? Thank you.
Not sure. Traditionally they are boiled and not steamed
I am pescatarian. Only animal I eat is fish. Besides eggs and dairy. Any suggestions for fish version... maybe shrimps or similar?? I miss pasteles.

Okay I made the juca patellas okay I put two in the oven at 350 for an hour. And I have 2 boiling how long do the ones that are boiling take?
If the pasteles are fresh, they should take about 45 mins to one hour boiling. Good luck!
If I don’t have the shortening I what can I replace it with??
You can use vegetable oil instead or just omit it.
Thank you I will make this for sure
Great to hear!
I want to try!!
You should definitely give it a try! ☺️
Can you use a blender for the dough instead of whisking it by hand and then adding the olives after it's smooth?
No, don’t try to do the blender. It will really change the consistency of the pastel, maybe you like it but it will be different
New to the channel and I’m eager to learn the culture of the food.

I also live in California. I buy a box of paper for tamales from Smart & Final. It's the same paper and you can store the rest for years to come.
Aren’t you supposed to drain the yuca first?
No need to do that.
It's chewy because you didn't drain the Yuca. I made that mistake as well.
I am trying this right now xoxoxoxo
