    This is what I saw when I was a kid that made me want to work in arcades.

    Legit experienced this setup in Epicot was back in 90s as a young teenager. They had a free play setup going. Winner stays on. Remained there for just under an hour when my dad came back and dragged me off mid race yelling at me about not going to Disney to sit and play Sega lol.

    I remember Sega made several versions of this super deluxe cabinet. There's another 8 player version that has a full car cockpit that you climb inside.
    The version in this video is the newer version where Sega tried to reduce the size of the machine for easier transport and maintenance. They left the seats, but got rid of the cockpit car that surrounded the seats in the older super deluxe models.

      I've also seen one with the cars but the seats are stationary. It seems like they kinda tried everything. 😅

    I don´t know how many Euros I´ve give in this game. The technical college time for me as an electrician has good and bad sides, but this was one of the best. It was very funny to play and for oldschool gamer like me, perfect!!

      I agree. I've played on the deluxe version of the current game, Daytona Championship USA and, while the graphics and cabinet are all very showy, the game itself wasn't as much fun.

    I grew up right next to a big arcade/mini-golf course in the 90’s and early 00’s. They had an 8 car set up like this with the cockpits that went around the seats. They put the machines up on a mini stage that was raised up 2 or 3 feet. The wait line would stand below and look up at the monitors watching like a crowd (always had a long line) waiting their turn. It was like the centerpiece of that arcade.
    As someone else mentioned, our arcade had a rule that if you won, you got to play again. But eventually they had to limit the amount of replays the winner got because there was a few kids that would just dominate race after race. The fastest ones always used manual and always raced dirty. I remember you were like a rockstar if you were the kid that kept winning and replaying haha.
    On the weekends, it’d be so crowded that they’d have to 1 or 2 staff members that would just stand by the Daytona machines just in case it got chaotic. Arcades had a different feel back in the 90’s. Glad I got to experience it. Thanks for the good memories.

      I participated in a Daytona USA tournament once. We met weekly for like a month going through several rounds and sometimes had to play on Grand Prix and Endurance modes. As you may recall, normal mode is 8, 4, and 2 laps for Beginner, Advanced, and Expert courses. Grand Prix makes that 20, 10, and 5 laps. Endurance is 80, 20, and 10 laps. Some of our races lasted over 45 minutes in those modes. I remember my arms feeling like jelly afterward. Even with "winner stays" rules, I'd probably want to quit eventually. ;)

    I remember seeing a setup like this at a Dave and Busters in Hilliard, OH. Supposedly, and, I'm not sure if this is correct or not, this MIGHT have been the same machine I played at that D&B as I recall a post somewhere asking where this setup came from and they said a Dave and Buster's in Ohio. Glad to see this cabinet is in really good condition like this. It's getting harder and harder to find Daytona USA cabinets where I'm from, that's for sure.

    Bear in mind when these were new in 1994 each cabinet was around $25,000. So you would have a $200k installation right there in 1994 money. I have only seen eight full cabs in a few places. There was one installed at a local arcade where I grew up, which opened in 1996. A different place close to me also had one of the few full scale Ridge Racer setups in the world, the one with the 1:1 scale Mazda MX5 (Eunos) Roadster in front of a massive projector screen.

    This is crazy, how do you even get them to output to monitor this large? In love with this setup.

    • @brianho25
      @brianho25  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The deluxe/special cabinets originally had 50" CRT rear projection monitors on them. Most of those monitors have long since died. These have been retrofit with 47" LCD monitors. 47" 16:9 happens to be roughly the same width as the old 50" 4:3 monitors, so they fit pretty well.
