  • Final video of the new turbo install. The new oil feed tube I got was the wrong one. I try to use my old one temporarily. It leaked. I try to weld it closed. I ultimately found a brand new one that worked perfectly.

    Steve something to consider, get yourself 2lbs of 3/32 blue flux 312 welding rods, they are high chrome and will weld all kinds of dissimilar metal together. Not for everyday use, so you maybe want to keep them aside in a ziplock bag so they stay fresh, but great to have when you're in a pinch at 22h30 on a Sunday night. Big fan of old school trucks like Orwell, means that you aren't beholden to any conspiracy to prevent people fixing their own stuff. Power to you buddy.

    I think you would have had better luck trying to braze the pipe with brass, but good to see you were able to get the proper line. Enjoy your videos, Steve. Keep up the good work.

    I agree, the stainless braided flex hose seems like a better idea. I would think the flexible hose would dampen some vibration from the engine being transmitted into the turbo cartridge fitting, but I'm neither a mechanic nor automotive engineer.

      I tend to agree with you here. I think the choice between the two is that hard lines are much cheaper than braided stainless, and can using the right fittings can be pretty vibration resistant. And OEMs love to save money.

    I knew it was the hose. I dont think it was the turbo, i mean the leak affected the turbo, but the main reason was that pipe leak. There was not enough oil getting into the turbo to lubricate the moving parts and thats why the turbo was a little stiff

    Steve I can't believe you welded on your fender for one !!! And as for the way the new tube was made I would have to guess the brazing technique used today would be different than the way it was done 37 years ago . For two reasons one the EPA I'm sure had something to do with the materials that where once used and sometime cheaper , easier , or better ways are developed over time . I myself think it was the EPA taking all the fun out of things . LOL

    It's almost impossible to weld a joint like that together when it's got oil inside the connection. It boils out with the heat while you're welding and creates porosity in the weld and so it leaks. This is even more of a problem when you use a mig gun to weld it with. You could possibly get a leak free weld by grinding the first weld pass down to get rid of some of the porosity and then heating the steel block cherry red with a rosebud to get rid of any remaining oil and then run another bead over the top of the first one.

    Great to see another shop video, hope the Detroit is comin along nicely as well. Just wonderin, is there a way ya could pressure check the tube to see if it was leaking before puttin back on?

    • @ralfie8801
      @ralfie8801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He could have cleaned the area up with some spray solvent and made sure of where the oil was coming from before he took the old turbo off, just as easily as he did after putting it back together.

    if the feed tube is leaking would that by chance cause white smoke out of your stacks? Mines currently leaking at the bottom end. I also started getting white smoke on idle and in low gears with some puttering. Or 2 different issues maybe?
