Glad to have vids like this, give people like my self and other the how to un replace breaks, seals and many other things. But damn, the breaks and pads covered in muck. I seen the next part, much cleaner then this. Now I know what to see and smell when and if seal goes bad. Keep up the best work in the Truck shop.
The lube appeared rusty when you shot inside the hub showing the bearing. A company I worked for had two trucks lose a set of duals the day after a brake job because the new head mechanic thought he could save some money. Instead of spending $60 for 4 axle nut fixing plates, they got two big dollar tow bills, and lost a set of duals with axle shaft when the assembly couldn't be located. Clean all the threads on the wheel studs and nuts. I use grease on the lug nuts, some say install dry. I've never had an issue of lugs loosening after install. For brake parts, instead of anti-seize, use disc brake silicone lubricant. Anti-seize washes off with time, the silicone brake grease stays put.
Hey Steve, great video. Just wanted to let you know (if you didn't already. ) Stemco makes a one piece nut, with an internal lock. We started using them several years back. You preload the one nut, then insert the locking tang inside. They really hold up well on our dump trucks and long haul tractors. Keep living the dream, brother!
My hero. You've got a little grease smeared.....right there.❤🇺🇸🐘You can tell when the Zoloft is doing its thing when my hero calls his wheel bearings "little buddy"
I used to put a piece of greased up plywood under the wheels, pop the axle out, remove the axle nuts, then slide the whole assembly out to change the wheel seal, brakes, and/or bearings. It was a bit of a time saver for me.
I miss working on the trucks with my father in the 1980 s and 90 s Hard work always pays off in the long run good work be careful you are breatheing very heavy
Steve, great videos, informative and entertaining. Brake Clean is the best thing since sliced bread for cleaning parts. The fumes from it are down right nasty. You don't want to be breathing that. If you're going to use it as your primary cleaning tool, open the shop door or clean outside. I like to use diesel fuel (not gasoline) and a parts cleaning brush to clean the heavy grease off, then use Brake Clean as a final rinse outside the garage or with the door open. The diesel fuel is way safer to use than gas and you will use way less Brake Clean (saving money). It might take a little longer to clean your parts, but at the end of the day, week or month, will it really matter? My decision to do it this way is safety and health. This is just a suggestion based on my personal experience, nothing more.
Nice job big guy! You should use “gun wash” from the body shop. It’s used to clean paint guns out after using them. I use it from a 5 gal pale. I put it in a pump sprayer and it does a better job than a zillion cans of brake parts cleaner. It works the same, smells better and safer than those cans. It works just like brake parts cleaner and leaves absolutely no residue and dries just as fast if not faster. Plus you don’t have to kill your finger pushing that stupid button on the cans. It’s a hell of a lot cheaper too!!!
Next time leave the hub on with outer bearing removed thread the bearing nut back on grab the hub and pull the inner bearing and seal will come out when you pull the hub cause the nut acts as a stop your welcome or use the axle put it under the bearing and pry them both out use axle as a lever
And if you don't like that method (which is excellent, btw) get a long piece of brass and drive the seat out with the inner bearing. Either works fine.
👍👍 Man I had a rear axle Barring blow out and catch fire coming out of Canada 15 miles out of Batavia NY. what a mess I had after I put the small fire out. I had hot discolored metal all out on the roadway. The race broke. Peace Brother. Stay safe.
I have been hearing you breath wile you were working I had the same sound and got worn out quick so I went in to my docter they ran test but it keep the same finily i had my heart cath at a cardiologist and he had to put 2 stents in becaus of 85% blockage I felt better when i woke up but it takes a bet to be able to go back to work you want to chatch it befor a heart attack so it dose not caus hart damage .
There again man another good video I don't know if you should have been a school teacher or what but I do know you do real good teaching mechanic work I tell you one thing I learned a lot watching your videos just keep doing what you do and you are definitely good truck-driving but I just think you missed your calling smile
@@scarlett-walker4908 and that new of a truck shouldn't be having these kinds of problems if so your in for a lot of repair bills if not under warranty and they try every way to get out of covering it been there before with company I work for taking it to the dealership for repair and your downtime is what kills you dealers don't get in no hurry to do warrenty work
The seal goes bad when the bearing allows the axle to drop . Thus you are better off replacing the bearings and race, inner and outer, and the new seal. If there is a ring or grove cut in the axle then you should buy a sleeve repair kit that covers the grooved part where the seal cut the groove.. Their like $10 to $15 bucks vs a new axle !
Flatten yourself a cardboard box and put it under the axle. Then you have something to soak up the oil, the cleaner overspray, and it's easier on those old knees. Hardest part for me was watching you kneel directly on the floor. Get a foam kneeler
Flip that hub and drive bearing & seal out together. Ole Pap is getting ready to retire. Make me sum room for my triple bank & I'll lend you my 45 years experience
I was watching this truck driver from South America rear wheel seal went out no oil in the rear end this dude pull both axles out fill the rear end up with bananas and it worked he got where he had to go amazing
when you are at it change out your rusted wheel, it looks so out of place. LOL Yes it gets the job done but why not make it look somewhat better or match the others at least.
You are very well educated when it comes to truck maintenance ! Impressive ! There is no telling what that would have cost at a truck shop !

Great channel!! Now that is what you call an Owner Operator!! You take care of Orwell and he'll take care if you.
Steve u like u always working on old school trucks / keep them on the road specially these days = parts hard to get / good.job Steve/take care
Reminds me of (me) doing A and B services on Army trucks!
Shrek is a good mechanic! 👍🏼

Great video Steve brings back memories of when I was a kid helping my Dad fix a wheel seal in our driveway. Thanks for sharing this video stay safe.
Ha ha Steve u ain't the only one that has that tool allot of the mechanic's they have it in there tool boxes and so do i.
FSC Truck Shop , Loved here in England .
Awesome tech! Thanks Steve! Subcribed.
Steve check the vent on the housing. The lube looks like garbage imho. Your getting to much condensation in the housing from hot to cold cycles.
Nicely done Steve. Like how you explain things

Yeah I like the old ones these vehicles now days you have to have a computer to work on a computer Good job 👏 👍

A lot of the time Dirt bilds up and makes the axle breather tube plug up and causes to much presser they should clean them at every pm service
Great job, very interesting to a simple non automotive engineer. Nice step by step.
Yep, that gear oil smells like cat pics.
Thanks for sharing.
caged a brake chamber or 2 in my day...along with blocking air supply to stop leak
When taking apart grab shoe and slide rollers out. Same on reassembly. Don’t have to fight springs

i wonder what you'll do to a 2023 peterbilt, i know it will be nothing to you your amazing..
With a 2023 Peterbilt. Absolutely nothing. New trucks have way too many issues to make money with.
@@fsctruckshop6537 i see why you like old trucks i get it now...

Check the vent.
Rust in the hub eek.
Some of the techniques are hard to watch.
should have tightened that inner nut to see how loose the bearings were which might cause the seal to fail?
Brother Steve You just Love working in Oil and Greese Brother take that extra few minutes and power wash that Shit off and make your life easier...

How much would that cost you if you had it in a shop on the road
Close to 800 bucks
Be very careful you don’t get any paint on those wheels
Flip that hub and drive bearing & seal out together. Ole Pap is getting ready to retire. Make me sum room for my triple bank & I'll lend you my 45 years experience

The clean way to do this pay a shop to change the seal 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think the $275-350 savings goes along way in cleaning up afterwards and you can trust your own work compaired to some shop working on it
Those inner lugs should not come loose when you remove the outer lugs !
Your not torquing them correctly !!?
I had smelled something for awhile...it turned out it was my dirty head😨😨😳😳
I love your videos but became concerned about your safety while you are under Orwell. Please be safe.
