  • Honda Civic 2022 in Europe is an e:HEV. That’s the hybrid powertrain we know from the Jazz or HR-V, among others. The car is either propelled by an electric motor, the energy for which is generated by the internal combustion engine, or the energy is recouped during coasting and braking, or the internal combustion engine drives the car itself, possibly with some assistance of the electric motor under hard acceleration. Americans got the European-looking liftback, with old powertrains, but with a manual gearbox option. The 11th-generation Honda Civic powered by a two-liter petrol engine with an i-MMD hybrid system has a claimed zero-to-hundred km/h time of between 7.8 and 8.1 seconds, depending on the trim.

A viewer on my Polish channel sent me this: th-cam.com/video/WD2_TQ8ZCBo/w-d-xo.html (3:57).
I see how I got this wrong. TBH it's the first time I heard about it. I understand how e:HEV works, but as soon as I heard eCVT, I ignored everything, and focused on CVT. My fault.

Don't know why Honda had to put the stupid eCvt word everywhere, I think it's a fail bc a lot of people hate CVT
Instead they should named it Civic Direct Drive or maybe CVD Continuously Variable Drive

@@luckystrike656 It must have been the marketing guys. They wanted to give the customers a term that they know. The engineers definitely did not approve the term "e-CVT". On the other hand, the eelectric power is modulated in a way that simulates a mechanical CVT, so it is kind of appropriate.

I'm not sure he missed it, maybe it was simply poorly explained here.
Indeed, the system is not a "CVT", it's an ev-like single gear.
The only difference is that the engine can drive the wheels via a clutch, but again just one gear.
They called it CVT because people would be confused about "no gears", but in reality it would have been better to call it a Range extended EV, which is appropriate mostly.

Exactly, there is no CVT at all. The name "e-cvt" here means "electronically continous variable torque" that is completly different from "continous variable transmition" (in Toyota). There is only one fixed gear for electric motor drive and one for engine (that is directly connected via clutch in some specific drive condition (stable velocity 70-120 kmh). In all other conditions there is elmotor driving the car. There is no way that engine and elmotor are working together as you have said in the video. Before testing it would be fine to look better at the tech info.

I have about 1000km in my Advance version. I just switched the Pilot Sport 4s to Goodyear's winter tires. It was quite a transformation to the car. The noise Marek mentioned is definitely coming from the tires. 235/40 R18 requires smooth roads to be quiet. However handling took also hit... I guess Honda wants to be bit more sporty than Toyota, which makes the PS4 quite understandable choice... However, Elegance-version's 17" wheels and slightly more comfort oriented tires might be very nice combo for this car. Anyway, if you want sportier handling, road noise is usually what you get as well... Or very poor tread wear.
I have not had issues with blind spot monitoring nor traffic sign recognition systems at all. Ok, blind spot monitoring beeps sometimes when it does not really need to, but I do understand why it does that (I switch signal on while passing car is still next to me...). Traffic signs are recognized very well here, but maybe Poland has bit different signs? Issues of the global car?
The 1st tank full of fuel gave me average consumption 5.07l/100km. It was mixed driving including plenty of motorways also. Considering it was breaking in period + cold mornings, I don' t thing that was bad at all. And it looks like I will get better numbers with those lighter wheels and narrower winter tires...
Power train is quite confusing. I'm usually telling people that I basically drive electric car all the time (it is just the electric motor propelling the car most of the time anyway). Here is pretty good explanation about it in English if someone is interested (for jazz/fit, but it is the same concept for civic): th-cam.com/video/6glpZTRT6qE/w-d-xo.html
btw Wireless Android Auto is not officially supported, but you can switch it on from the diagnostic menu. Works fine, I'v been using it for awhile now.

What's great about it is obviously the Honda build, reliability and fuel consumption, if you are interested in these and you can overlook the design which is a strange mix of coupe/sedan/station, , the sound proofing at moderate and higher speeds, the lack of high top speed (something that is coming as the norm in a lot of new hybrid/electric cars) and the not so fresh interior, it is the perfect car. Purely a car for the sensible buyer and not the one who wants something more performance oriented and stylish. I am looking at buying my next car and I can’t see any cars out there that are matching the Civic. The closest is the 2.0 Corolla hybrid but it’s not really as sporty to drive as the Civic.
Most manufacturers are producing substandard full EVs which don’t suit most people, or PHEVs which are only really good for the WLTP fuel test. Most of the Europeans are still churning out small turbo petrols as if we’re in 2012. Some are even still pushing 2.0 diesels like we’re in 2005!!

My specialty topic is Honda Preludes, but I can help with the whole 'Euro' Civic question as well Marek :)
For the 8th and 9th generation Civic, Honda split the model into two distinctive designs - a sedan and coupe for the American and Asian markets, and a hatchback and wagon for the European market. Some markets, like New Zealand and Australia got a bit of both, so the hatchback was often referred to locally as the 'Euro' Civic. The same thing also occurred with the Accord of the same era, with the American market Accord being completely different to the European/Asian market version. In some markets that were offered both the European version was sold officially as the Accord Euro.
I actually quite like this new Civic, and I think I could live with its flaws. Shame about the pricing though, so I might wait for some used examples to become available.

  • @SOMEONE-ME
    @SOMEONE-ME ปีที่แล้ว +5

Powertrain system is based on same idea as in eg. Jazz, but it's more powerful one and newly developed.
This car has no gearbox in any shape. It's maybe 20th review which keeps talking about gearbox (please do some research first- there is great video on YT from Honda which explains how whole system works).
It's all simulated and extra faked in SPORT mode buy special unit which can't be turned off (but can be disconnected by 10min DIY). "Gears" in this car is a modulation of the current which powers electric motor.
It's basically an electric car, which most of the time is driven by quite powerful electric motor. Only at specific scenarios (calm, steady ride at 70-140Km/h) system can switch to direct drive by petrol engine (through simple clutch, aka. 6th gear). Any acceleration, hill etc and you back to hybrid mode where electric motor powers wheels and petrol engine just powers generator and battery. In case of any sudden need for extra power system will use generator (so also petrol engine) + stored battery power.
This car never uses both engines at the same time to drive wheels! It's fundamentally different system to Toyota's.
Whole idea is based on fact that petrol engine is mostly disconnected from wheels and can operate at optimal conditions close to maximum engine efficiency (2-3K RPM). Any surplus of energy is stored in battery for later use. This is key secret of this drive system. Typical petrol car operates at relatively low efficiency which changes through the drive and about never reaches optimal value. Here petrol engine, is most of the time, close to its optimal working point, so petrol usage is relatively low (recuperated energy helps further). System is so clever, that when you drive steadily on petrol engine directly and battery gets full, it will switch petrol engine off and instead of wasting new energy it will drive purely from energy stored in battery (even if we drive eg. 120Km/h). Once battery discharges (not close to 0 , but to safe value to prolong its life) petrol engine turns itself on and whole cycle repeats. Petrol engine never slows or speeds too much as this would mean leaving optimal working condition (and burning even 2x more fuel). Instead we either store extra energy in battery or take it from battery (surplus of energy stored earlier or from recuperation). Plain simple at the end. Even recuperation works efficiently as wheels are connected directly with powerful electric motor (no gearbox). Extra good news is that petrol engine is never stressed too much, but operates steadily around its optimal conditions. Thanks to all of this Honda offers warranty up to 300K km as there is not much to break (electric motors are rather reliable parts). We will see how it translates to real life.
Issue with noise may be at least a bit related to fact that Honda comes with Michelin Pilot Sport tires, which are great for grip, but also bit noisy.

Excellent comment. Lots of useful info. Do you have a link to that honda video explaining the hybrid system. One thing i'll never understand, why they don't use a smaller efficient engine instead of a 4 cylinder. Honda have an excellent efficient 750cc twin cylinder in their NC750x. That would be more than enough to keep a battery charged. It might need to run longer than the 4 cylinder but it would run more efficiently. The NC750x gets 80MPG+ (UK) easily.

After watching the video, I felt like wanting to come here and criticize Marek for being too harsh on purpose with this model. But I am no Honda fanboy (or anything fanboy, really), so I will only give my two cents.
With all cars, some things are good and some are bad. Cost cutting, poor design decisions or quirks are not shown in press releases and might be missed by some reviewers (by mistake, hopefully). So I will say thank you, Marek, for letting me know what I should check when I test drive this car. For me it might not be deal breaker, but it's good to know.
What's also good to know is what and who this car is for. It's clearly designed to be used in the city for most of the time and also it's a great fit for short trips. Due to the transmission layout, the engine will be controlled by the ECU alone, so it will run at a more or less constant RPM (because you don't change gears), which is better for the engine, especially when cold.
It's built for efficiency, reliability and economy and targeted to those who are specifically looking for that.
The car is comfortable enough, probably, and might be pleasurable to drive as well, I will test it to see for myself. I already know that the eHEV system fits my needs perfectly and it might be the main selling point of this car if more people understand it.
I have seen just one reviewer explain the system thoroughly (I'd share the video, but it's in Romanian) and I think it's been overlooked for the most part, which is a shame because it could be a very useful information for people interested in this segment.

B u t, the dealer priced it extremely wrong, prices starting *from* 41.500. Wtf???
Quality inside looks really good, design-wise the simplicity is my cup of tea, and overall a nice normal design - nothing groundbraking like the mazda 3 though.
PS.: Marek, you forgot the design of the previous Civic, when mentioning the other generations being more extreme...

I think gen10 civic had wonderful petrol engines with manual but a terrible looks and interior. Especially the infotainment was below-par to pretty much any manufacturer. Now it is so so much improved. But scrapping these manual petrols sort of mad Honda Civic to lose it's real face. Now with the hybrid, small fuel tank, not too comfortable seating and a bad sound proofing it is just not a car for longer highway rides. Then why you would implement hot-hatch like performance? I don't really see a lot of sense in this car.. Shame!

I have the entry level, with 17 inch wheels, it is not noisy, seats are comfortable, the ride is almost perfect. Compared to the last generation and my former BMW 318.

A great looking interior but I can't warm to the exterior look. It's a bland design and has lost any character of the previous version. The unusually low Civic is a compromise too far. Getting out again would be a literal pain for me.

Brilliant technology, often poor execution. That is Honda. As a past owner of the 10th gen Civic, I can attest to that. I think that this sports hatchback will appeal to few people. Most like to sit higher and more upright, that is why this is the age of the (sports) SUV. The Civic has also gotten too expensive for mid-class people I think. It is also very complex, with corresponding increase in maintenance costs. I think that there are other (Japanese) brands with better value for money.

What are those Japanese brands with better value for money?
Which new cars today are not complex except for the cheapest ones?
I am not trying to defend the Civic here, these are just honest questions.

    • @archangelhorus

@@otomoravec1732 Indeed, cars have become very complex. But Honda's hybrid train is even more so. I think that Toyota and Suzuki, the former because it retains value more, the latter because it's cheaper, have better VFM.

It doesnt even have a gearbox in a conventional way. Its only called eCVT, but has nothing to do with a traditional CVT.They dont change the gear ratio mechanically, they change the amount of electric current, which is sent to the electric motor.

eCVT is the natural perfect design for any hybrid. Any hybrid without e-CVT is very jolty and not as efficient and not as reliable.

I am shocked that this is the only option available for the new Civic!!
They took away the last generation which was very good and affordable, which we could buy until a month ago, and replaced it with an automatic only hybrid, which costs nearly double the price here!!
The 1.0L and 1.5L manual tenth generation were actually perfect for most people looking for a family car, but this isn't!
The "old" Civic started at less than €25,000 here, but this one starts at €47,000!! - it's hardly an affordable family car anymore, when who wants to drive a stupid heavy hybrid automatic?! 😯😂🩲🦨🚗 .
While of course the Type R is manual petrol and non hybrid, but it'll probably be €80,000 here if they even sell it, when the last one cost €60,000+, when the likes of Carwow already bemoaned the fact that it's £12,000 dearer than the old model...
IF this new car was available with a non hybrid engine and a manual gearbox for less than €30,000, it might have a place in the market, but as it is no chance!
And while I wouldn't touch an EV with a bargepole, the Tesla model 3 has come down in price twice recently, starting at around €60,000 a few months ago, but it now starts at €43,000, so if this one drives like an EV, why not buy a silly EV instead?! 😯
Wow, Honda have really screwed up with this! 😂🩲 .
