- Do NEW Subwoofers Require a "Break-In" Period?? 🤔 (my honest opinion..)
Have you been told your brand new subwoofers need to be broken in? Are your worried your subs could burn, blow or underperform if they're not broken in properly?
Is there a specific way to break your subs in?
Let's settle this once and for all..

Full tilt out of the box 🔊🔊
It's rarely a problem!
God damn right!! Lmaooo send it straight from factory
I did this to my 2 deaf bounce 3512r and the surrounds came loose. No warranty coverage
Facts I’ll go full tilt out the factory! Never ever ever broke in subs and I’m 46 the only thing I broke was my latch and some hearts!
@@krischilamootoo6562 That's rare. Must have been defective. Not glued very well..
We always told customers subwoofers are like a pair of new shoes after you wear them for a while they start to loosen up
Great analogy!
Exept its not the same material as a shoe.
👏 @@tysonchickennuggets
@@tysonchickennuggetsits the same propetty, ur basically saying that theres no breakin period between a nike pleather and a nike real leather
@@nouns7504 most shoes are not leather. but either way the magnetic force from subwoofers are quite strong, so i dont see why there needs to be a break in period.
One thing you said so far I agree with. Subs don’t need to be broken in. They do it themselves over time. None of that play at half volume stuff makes sense. Put them in and pound them.
😂
Yup and that’s how you seperate glue from the spider landing 😅from any high power sub with multilayer stiff spider packs and need a re-cone.
Just let that 5k rms sub hammer at 20hz immediately after install and congrats 🎉 youre buying new soft parts just like that 🫰
High end headphones need a break-in period, why wouldn't a sub?
@@BASSHEADBOOM hi end sub? Weird my sundown x series took 5k out the box no issues. Sundown break-in period is as follows “hook them up and give them full power”. So maybe your “high end sub” dealer wants you to bump it at 50% for x amount of hours so the warranty runs out before you realize you payed for a name not the actual sub? I have never broke in a sub and I’ve had a lot of subs. Clipping kills subs period. If your sub comes apart at rated power maybe buy a new brand of sub?
@@niclikescakes you also drive your car at 50% till it breaks in? Doing 25 in a 50? It’s only so they can blame you for their shit blowing at rated power. Why would the glue fail before the rubber or any other soft part? Glue is always the strongest bond in any application sir. Why doesn’t the voice coil glue on my sundown x series fail when I’m pushing 5k into a sub rated at 1.5k? Break-in an L7 however long you want at 50% then give it rated rms at it’s rated frequency for an hr. Then take a sundown sub and do the same but no break-in period. I will bet you anything the L7 cooks the voice coil at 10 min max even tho you spent 6 months “breaking it in”
I never break in a sub, I just break it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Omm

I just blew a dust cap off a 2 month old sub 😂🤦🏽♂️
My man! Hahah💯
Agree never broke a sub speaker in nver had an issue
That kicker quad box is absolutely gorgeous
It's a MAMMOTH enclosure!
I want to put it under my tano cover that is on my Dakota
I had a few different brands for 4 dif cars, 4 dif systems. New amps, new subs. I turn it up all the way first turn on. Its fine. I have noticed new products tend to have a very weird smell for the first day or two tho once they heat up.
Yeah that's the excess glue the burns
It's the glue on the coil heating up 😂
I agree. Ive always just waited for the sub the brake in over couple of weeks
Yes, get your subwoofers installed this spring for summertime fun
Keep selling those. I make a lot of money, with my hearing aid investment. You are my hero.
Happy to oblige ;)
I just installed new subs and the same day I was at almost peak volume and varying the HZ from 30 to 80... And it works just fine
Yea I do tend to hear a massive increase in audio and clarity from when they are new
Exactly!!! 💯 I thought he was gonna say the opposite. In my 35+ years I've never damaged a subwoofer because I didn't follow the manufacturers break in procedure. I usually play songs in the low to mid 20's so my spiders loosen up quick anyway.
Exactly!!
Nice video, i doo agree with your conclusion!
But after 39 years in car audio you should know that the xmax has nothing to do with the stiffness of the spider, but rather how far the cone can move without exiting the magnetic fileld of the magnet :)
I installed my shit and immediately started bumping that’s my break in😂
I have a Fi Neo 3.5 12 inch sub and when I first got it, it sound great. But as it broke in, the sound quality improved slightly. Fi subwoofers are very well made and even their louder subwoofers are very musical.
I just put 2 10s in my moms truck and didn’t let that shit break in at all lol
Indeed what I was thinking , just listen to your damn music and it happens over time by itself.
I’m 53 years old I’ve had 20 to 30 subs over my lifetime ranging from 18 to 10 I have gone balls to the wall from the get-go never had a sub give out from having no breaking
Same here!
The old Precision Power PRO series flat piston subs from the late 90's definitely required a break-in period, but those were the only subwoofers we ever did so for prior to installation.
Those subs are badass 😎 👍🏻
Yes. They do.
For about a week of your commute to and from work
I've always turned my amp down a little bit for a week or so then crank it up later on
100% agree with you!!!!!!!!!
Can definitely tell the difference once a subs is breaking n some never get lose
From experience you can go full tilt but as they break in you can increase power over time
Yes all correct BUT you as do many are using the term xmax incorrectly, the term you would use is just plain ol excursion. X max is a specification that's a measurement from a formula. Xmax is the maximum linear excursion, which is movment of the coil windings while remaining within the gap, it doesn't change. The xmax number is It is coil Winding width minus top plate thickness, seems it's almost always listed as one way you divide that last number by 2. Xmech is how far the coil can move before mechanical interference.
In my experience the stiffer the cone is the more it need a break in period for "color" subs are not really stiff because then it would not be able to reach those deep lows. Usually this is more for mid range and low mids it can affect the high end but your gonna choose your tweeters depending on taste and stiffness anyway so.. just dont blast your new audio setup at high volume and it will be fine after a week or so.. correct me if im wrong but my experience comes from studio monitors not car audio 😅
In low power applications, I would say you’re correct but when you’re dealing with some thing that can take 5000 W a break-in would definitely add to the longevity of the sub I’ve blown subwoofers from not breaking them in so just know your equipment and how do use it if not, it’ll let you know and you’ll be sad
Yes just play them it's fine
Hahahahahahahaha!!! I've Never broke-in a Sub, just install. Hook up and max out thatbass knob!LmAo!! 😅😅
My brand new pair of Skar Audio EVL-12 D2 are smelling
Could just be the adhesive. Play moderately for a few days. As long as they're not blown, it should go away soon.
I broke mine and like you do a two-stroke
if you want to play full on you have to. the stiff suspension make the driver move less and then it dosent cool down as easy. and can burn the coil faster.
I've personally had subs break loose voice coils and spiders from not "breaking" them in... I have to say that it's mostly about the subs designs and hasn't happened in a very long time, but a lot of the aluminum cone subs without a dust cap had problems... So as long as you're not pushing crazy power for competition, you shouldn't have to worry about any break in.
Yeah i understand that if u crank the power mayb wana break in but im usally always on rms or close to and have good branded subs no issues
Right
Paying different kinds of music helps the sound quality with big speakers like that you Definitely need stereo with High output x4 or a separate amplifier
Something tells me no one has ever called back saying wow my subs are louder now than when I first got them
I've always broken in my Subs and they've always been sealed boxes and they've always been pushed wavy on their limits once they're broken in
Really appreciate your comment. I do have 12 inch Sub . I just installed yesterday , had that concern about it should I break it or not?
You should be good if you tuned things right and set your gain structure properly. Crank it up!
Everything this man says is 💯 correct
👊😎
Breaks some of the resin strands on the spider making it more compliant. Softer spider eauals lower smoother bass reprodution compared to a stiffer spider with a higher Q factor.
Question what is w factor my old jvc im running to a old grey cone kicker 12 cvr and a old single voicecoil mtx jackhammer its like 250 watts rms cheaper one but radio bass equalizer has q factor in it believe its 1.0,, 1.5,, 1.75,, 2.0
If your going to competition next day or two. Only way i see breaking in is necessary..
My Memphis Mojo's were pumpin out the bass the first day, and sound just as good 4 years later. If your subs needs a break in, you're buying the wrong subs
I've been doing A/V installation for about 30 years myself and I have never heard a customer say that. If anything they call back once they have gotten adjusted to the subs and now they want more.
That happens as well ... but more like after 30 - 60 days. At first they notice an uptick, then there ears adjust, and then they want MORE.
Let the customer break it in, you will usually gain a DB or two especially on the lower frequencies after 30 or 40 hours of use. That helps offset listener fatigue as well. People always get used to their systems after a while.
We need more gain on the amp!
Well there's a difference between a shop hooking up your system compared to a person hooking up there system.
A shop will most likely have all the settings setup the way it should be.
Compared to someone personally setting up their own system. The chances of the settings not being right are higher. In turn making the chance of blowing a new sub greater.
Also if you happen to be using an amplifier that has more power then you need. & You just go full tilt on a new sub. Probably going to blow it.
My Avatar SVL 15's, says in the manual to break them in over 40hrs at medium volume.
That being said. I have blown a brand new subwoofer before playing it to loud in the first few minutes.
Tell this to best buy in the early 2000's when i would purposefully peak subs to blow them in the parking lot. Love me some best buy warranty.
Just put the volume button on 11 and Let her ride!
people dont realize that pushing your subs straight out the box is BAD for the spider and surround. DO NOT blast your brand new sub. break it in by simply using lower volumes or turning your subwoofer level down. not letting your sub break in during the first 2-3 days of use can lead to a broken surround and/or ripped spider.
My xv3 18s each on a cab 45 at 1 ohm took about 6months before i noticed a difference and i thought it'd be a day or 2.
Thankyou
In the lanes they ain’t got time for no break in, blow it and recone it at the show or have a spare wooofer. if it’s good for them it’ll be fine for anyone else 😂 most people today don’t even know you can recone a woofer and think it’s junk after they blow it 😂
Just like a mechanic telling you to break in new strut or tires
I personally never broke in a sub but also never had a 800 to 1000 dollar one...if i did an the manufacturer says break it in first...im probably gonna do that lol
Cool. Now make them turn off when entering a neighborhood or at a red light.
Here is my unprofessional opinion I buy Skar audio cause cheap and sound good lol but when I first got my 2500 watt subs 2 12 inch subs i could never break them in cause I couldn’t play them at a good volume cause of how thin the wire from the amp to the sub the sub would clip but eventually a couple months later they started to sound better now in my Jeep same issue not a though about it they are shallow mount 2 12s 1600 watts and I upgraded the wire just because I wanted to try it they bump harder than I would ever have though they could and I have been playing them like that for a while but a nice even break in is good i feel if you get 2 12s 2500 watts and play them at 2500 watts and really hard they won’t sound as good as if you would play them at varying volume and what not idk
What subs are you running in ur ride?
I switch between JL W7, Solo X and Sundown X-12's. I'm spoiled in that I can swap subs on a dime!
I’m not an expert but I think given some subs are extremely stiff out of the box, even half power over and extended period may cause the glue holding the spider to come apart. Yes some subs don’t need it, but others definitely do need a break in period
Me marge diffrence... I only have a noticeable diffrence with my Helix
They sound much warmer...
Well I’m 43 been building systems since I was 14 and the punch series 1 came out and I have never broken anything in
How come I can't hear it over the raspberry noise my rear plate is making? 😂
I let mass distortion break my subs in naturally
Clipping out the box tends to tear spiders easier yes or no
Kicker owners Manuel - just play at volume u like and it will break in when they break in
Exactly! Break in happens naturally as you play the music. 😂😂
Breaking in a sub isn't for listening to music. It's to get accurate measurements to build an accurate system. You can't design and tune a brand new sub and expect it to do the same thing once it's broken in. That said, of course this doesn't matter for most average system, but it's definitely a necessary step to get the most out of a system.
Question: do you think it would be advantageous to insert a Fleshlight into the port of a 15" sub? Asking for a friend.
💀
If you break In your Subs right they can handle way more than rated power I have a 800watt rms Rockville k9 10 that I have had for 5 years after the first 3 my other sub blew so I wired the single sub to 1 ohm with a taramps smart3. I have been pushing close to 3000 watts on an 800 watt sub that would get too hot before it was broke In and start to smoke at those power levels. I did a 4 year break in on that sub. Reconed the other one in december and breaking it in with a rockford fosgate 325.2 will be getting a bigger amp to finish the break in soon.
3000 watt on a 800 watt sub
Sounds a lot like the big fish that got away.
@@scamchan its crazy loud I probably don't have big enough batteries or alternators to get the full 3000 out of the amp but it's insane. Been wired to 1 ohm since December. We will see how long it lasts.
@@waderyun.war00034 If indeed 3000 watts was pushed to that 800 watt sub you wouldn't be here telling the story it still works.
My sub peaks at 2000 watts and I probably barely push 1000 to it.
I have aloooooooot of sound systems and subs never once have I came back a week later and thought wow my subs are louder lmao
One of those moments where I’m going to blindly trust the internet
Does this apply for shallow subs?
Nah let ‘em eat. If it’s gonna break it happens fast 😂❤
I'm reminded of the guy in the store talking so much about how he's got these crazy subs. And the worker kept telling him questions in the guy in new nothin. About the answers it was funny. I use voice to text so this sounds stupid what I said
Toroidal coils at zero ohms
What subwoofer sounds like a W6.. without the price tag?
I just do like 5 minutes of a fluctuating tone. Thats it. Then just send er.
There you go!
For those who never broke subs in please tell me what subs you were running🙄
Hi . I need information.. specs for 2 x 12s T3 T.400 box.please
If your playing 90 hertz on your subs somethings wrong
So break ins do affect the sub
FAX
💯💯
I like bass
Crank it till you can smell the coils 😂
My 18's actually play until about 120hz lol.
If you have very high end subwoofers you're going to want a six to eight hour break in period before you really push them. This comes from 25 years of car audio competition experience.
My sub gets louder when the weather is hot compared to cool weather.
In your 39 years have you ever been frustrated with false advertising from amp and subwoofer brands? When they throw a 3000W right on the corner of the box in BIG letters. 🤧🙃🙃🙃
Same thing with marine speakers
Xmax is the stroke of the motor. It has nothing to do with the suspension or "spider". Xmax is the difference between the coil length and the magnetic gap length. A spider will become softer with use. It then recovers its stiffness when not used for a month or two. Break in is just not important. Salesmen are not engineers, even after 30 years.
Well if I were an engineer you'd all fall asleep. And my apologies, "excursion" was probably the more accurate term.
How do customers know it's louder, do they carry a spl meter and measure at 1 meter away
You say "pink noise" as opposed to "white noise" Do you say pink noise because it will ultimately be going through a crossover to be coloured? Or should we actively boost/cut certain frequencies with dsp?
Can a 3000w sub damage a sunroof?
What’s a good subwoofer brand for 15 inch subs in ported box
Kicker and Sundown both make some really nice 15's. Rockford T series is another good choice.
Do you think it’s harder on subs to run them at 2 ohm or below. Yes I know the amp has to be able to support the lower ohm load but what about the subs. The only time I’ve ever blown a sub was when I ran them at 1 ohm all my previous subs had been set up at 4 ohm and ran for years.
Well what rms per voice coil on the sub if your amp say it a 1500.1 at 2ohm stable running it to 4 ohm from subs your only getting between 400-600 watts out the amp and running it at 2ohms the amp will push close to or if its a high quality one might do i hair over the 1500 watts it rated for
This guy still has his job? He's the guy that said anything below 45hz is worthless . Now he's saying 80 to 90hz . Come on man what are u doing.
Glad I Wasn't the only one that caught that
my subs are tuned to 30-35hz
If you dont want to wait for that, you can break them in with these test tones
Baby subs at low wattages no need break in , Hammer subs at high wattage you need to alway use the manufacturers recommended break in because the spiders can be so stiff that the coil can't move properly in the gap which will cause distortion and burning of the coils on a brand new subwoofer. Dude says subs don't need a break in but immediately says subs break in naturally and get louder. So YES subs need a break in.
I would like to know the breakdown period for the ears of the idiots with car stereos that you can feel a quarter mile away.
We've been in business 39 years and some of our original customers who are pushing 70+ come in with their hearing still in tact👌
