National Trust parking at the hamlet of Watendlath ( NT Members free) approx 30 spaces.
In the tiny hamlet of Watendlath there is a seasonal cafe and free toilets. It is worth visiting the lovely old stone bridge , look out for the Prince of Wales stone placed by him on the floor of the bridge, when the bridge was repaired after storm damage occurred. The Tarn is a peaceful spot for a picnic . There is a working farm located here too.
The route heads along Raise Gill to take the public footpath heading for High Tove. Once the gate is reached you veer to the right to keep the wall to your rhs and this squelchy route takes you directly to Blea Tarn. This is very peaceful and remote. It is possible to ford the outflow to head up the Ridge onto Coldbarrow Fell and eventually to Ullscarf.
The circular route descends over increasingly wet ground to reach Dock Tarn, a beautiful lily Tarn worth a detour when the dragonflies are out.
The route then heads down to Watendlath along a good stony track.
This is a remote , wet but beautiful area and involves alot of off piste ground, hiking in rough ground and Heather and just a few bogs.
Summits bagged are Ullscarf 726m ( Wainright ) and Coldbarrow Fell 675m ( Birkett) and Low Saddle 656m ( Nuttal, Birkett)

Hi Tracey. Haha, poor Leo, he looked like he had wellies on at the end. 🤣🤣
@@DAoutdoors haha 😄 he did look a bit sorry for himself at the end , poor Leo
Hi Tracey. Thanks for sharing your vlog this week. Fantastic views as always.
Shame it was a bit damp in places and you suffered wet feet. Poor Leo's legs after getting into a bog, still a dip in the tarn did the trick and cleaned him up.
ATB to you, Andy and Billy. Take care. X
@yvonnebailey9973 thanks Yvonne 😊 we nickname Leo ....Velcro ...as things seem to stick to him haha 😄 he is a good swimmer
Really enjoyed the video as always and although I've never done that route I've done Walla Crag to Ullscarf a couple of times. Not been since they paved a section of it but it was rather trying wet work when I was there. You had decent day for it mind. Smiled when the hysteria hit you. Lovely to hear the skylarks.
@gbfch haha thanks I'm glad my hysteria was funny haha ....blimey Walla Crag to Ullscarf ....wow ...that's a long.tortureous route haha 😄 wet wet wet , mind you the slabs are a god send now
Hi Tracey. We’ve just got back from Ullscarf and I didn’t think the bogs were too bad coming up from Wythburn Fell.
We were doing some Birkett-bashing and ended up descending from Brown Rigg and down the perimeter of the plantation to the north of Harrop Tarn. You ever been down there? What a nightmare!
Great vid.
Regards,
Charlie & Tony.
We have Tony , I remember it being muddy from brown Rigg to the plantation fence but we love it on Bell Crags. When we did Ullscarf it had been heavy thundery storms the day before so rather squelchy to Dock Tarn. So peaceful though. Thanks and atb
Thats looks a super route Tracey if it werent so squelchy lol. Sooo damn wet in the summer months its crazy. Always enjoyed the solitude of the Watendlath area and the brew and cake at the cafe 🍰☕ ATB
@tonypilki3 thanks Tony 😊
@@Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild I forgot to ask! was the cafe open Tracey 🤣 Ive been lucky 2 visits and open both times 🍰☕
@@tonypilki3 haha no it wasn't 🤣 😂 I've only ever seen it open twice
Hi Tracey,
You two do manage to find some lesser trod paths even if waterproof footwear is a necessity in bogworld. I really can't believe you went wrong, at least with your encyclopedic knowledge you can make it up as you go along, I bet there are loads of trods that don't appear on OS maps. Funny how you didn't meet anyone else on that route. Would you rather it be muddy but green or baked dry and parched? Didn't notice any comments about midges, were they hiding? Leo says can you make the next one a bit shorter 🤣 bet he slept well.
Cheers
Graham
@gberish602 haha Leo was a little trooper ....I don't mind the bogs, I'd much rather the Lakes.was green ...I remember what the lakes looked like rhe 1st summer of lockdown and the hills had turned brown , it was scorchio for 3 months here , all the bogs were crispy...funnily enough I was in Scotland for 3 days in July and no midges , can you believe it
@@Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild As you are up late and bearing in mind the date pinchy punchy 🤣😂😀
@@gberish602 haha thank you 😊
