    I'm an old time glass fitter, I used to fit these type of screens everyday. Your fitting was ok but long winded. Chromes were fitted using the "thumbing " technique which was quick and accurate. Sealant was applied, inside and out, prior to refit. I could remove, clean off, reassemble and refit, on my own in approx. 35-40 minutes

      How did you do sealant

    • @ronc3288
      @ronc3288 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@THIRSTYGUMS - 1 - with clean glass and rubber fit rubber onto glass - 2 seal glass to rubber on outer face of glass, scrape off excess. 3 fit chromes to rubber - 4 turn screen over, fit " pull in string" allowing a 2" overlap. 5. Apply outer sealant to rubber . 5 smear lipping edge of rubber with washing up liquid to aid fitment. 6. offer up assembled unit to frame, taking care to centre it side to side and top to bottom. &. Pull in the screen evenly. DO NOT HIT THE GLASS IN FRONT OF THE PULL IN POSITION OF THE STRING. Use a slapping action to apply pressure, spreading the load over all of the hand . A leather glove would be handy.

    This is fantastic! I've not yet found a shop that has correctly replaced the windshields in any W116s I've owned. One shop spent over two hours trying and ended up bleeding from poking each other with pick tools trying to get the lip of the seal over the pinch weld. But then they left chunks of the old seal still attached to the pinch weld and said it was fine to leave them on there as "rubber compresses". There was a big gap at the top and rain water would pour in. Then I went to Safelite, and even though I provided a new seal from the Mercedes dealership, after going back 5 times, they still could not get it to not leak no matter how much caulking they put in the gaps at the outer corners.
    I wish you would have been around to do the job. But, next time I will do it myself with what I have learned from the video. Also, beware! Some aftermarket rubber seals don't have the notch that holds the trim into the groove and the rubber is thicker and more dense than the original.

    • @1polymathman1
      @1polymathman1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Scott. It's really not that hard, you just need to know why you're doing what. All new windshields are glued in now, so it's hard to find an old guy who knows how to rope one in AND is willing to be shown this particular trick.

      Scott Buchanan first of all safelite is a joke company you should go to independent shop I have forgot more about glass than safelite Cincinnati will ever know across the country safelite fired all exp installers and hired rookies to do it the safelite way which in most cases is a joke.

    Unless you're trying to reuse the old seal you can just cut off the retaining edge/lip all around on the inside with a fresh hook blade. No need for a suction cup tension strap thing and it goes 100x faster.

    What does it mean if there's a gap at the upper left corner on the driver's side? I had a body shop replace my windshield last time and that's the way they left it. I didn't discover it for some time because I didn't know enough to look for it.

    • @1polymathman1
      @1polymathman1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the chrome has popped out from the seal, the chrome wasn't installed correctly - probably tried to put it in after the windshield was installed. If the seal is gaping, it wasn't pulled over the flange, will leak. Check to see if the rubber flap is over the chrome or under it.

    • @johnreid8551

      After looking at your video, I think I'm going to refer to it in order to attempt replacing the windshield myself. I miss not driving my 300CD.
