  • Removing the Sunroof panel on a 1984 Mercedes 300D, finding the right seals, lubricating and reinstalling the panel. This work should apply to similar, non-tilting sunroofs for W116 and earlier W126 chassis, among others. As of November, 2021, the front and rear seals are still available from Mercedes Benz, and they are worth hunting for. It may be possible to use aftermarket seals, but I was not able to install them. The side felts are not OEM, and they needed modification to fit, as you'll see...
Thanks for watching, I hope it's helpful for anyone doing this work

Thank you so much for the visual details about the front seal. I had to “chisel” in the lower lip with a soft wooden tool.

Excellent video.... thank you. I am about to start a total renovation of a W123 240D that I purchased new in 1983, your video has been saved.

My sunroof is sealed with silicone I'm not even sure if the motor is working. I bought the car like that and I think I'll try to work on it next summer during a dry spell. I have saved this video. Thanks.

Been thinking of buying myself some time with silicone caulking in the sunroof groove. Has this worked well for you?? Did you use GE clear silicone? I also have a few other vehicles with leaky sunroofs. I hate sunroofs!!!

I had a lot of issues while fitting those side seals; they are way too big (even the genuine are too big). I ended up trimming the side plates to make them fit, but I think your solution of trimming the seals is better. Really good video!

Excellent video. Thanks so much. You very effectively get to the point of how it's done. I forgot which way around that front seal goes and everybody just puts it in like it's easy as pie. Not so.....your side profile of the seal in the slot is really brilliant. Greetings from Namibia 🇳🇦 Africa.

    Good job.
I would've marked the rubber and the car roof with tape or chork at regular intervals, starting at the centre and working outwards. That way I know how much (length) rubber should be for a length of roof. This should reduce the rubber from stretching and collecting.

Getting that rear seal in was the most difficult job on the restauration on mine. It was horrible. And it was an original Part.
    The front one was okay.

Great video, If you polish the rest of the roof you do not have to repaint it. This yellow faints away due to Sun. Greeting from Germany.

Have done many of these seal's and they are not a nice job, the side seal's from MB are not the same design profile as the original one's fitted, this makes trying to use them is a royal pain in the rear, when you get the panel repainted make sure that they don't go heavy where the rear seal fit's for obvious reasons, good video 👍

Dont use aftermarket seal kit (as author says in video) (or at least dont buy from bamboli). I got full seals kit and rubber is way too stiff and impossible to install. Thankfully i got refund and bought original front one for 32 euros. Rear one was 150 so i decided to skip this one

    What grease did you use?

Super Lube. (A good quality synthetic grease) Petroleum based lubricants will deteriorate rubbers and plastics.
