- The World of Interiors presents Visitors’ Book with Caroline Egremont at Petworth House. As the current custodian of Petworth House, Caroline welcomes us into the private walled gardens, located in the parish of Petworth, West Sussex.
As we tour the picturesque landscape, we develop an understanding of how and why Caroline curated flow within the space through the use of pergola and expertly defined passageways: “There are three arches in alignment, all through the six-acre garden. And the reason for the arches being lined up is because the horses & carriage used to come down to get the produce from the vegetable garden to take back to the house.” Watch the full episode of Visitors’ Book as we explore Petworth House’s peaceful walled gardens.

This is exactly like The Secret Garden from the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
When I first read it, I imagined a magical, secluded, wild but tamed garden.

It sure hits the spot for me. I've been looking at gardens for decades because of a friend's interest, this is the first one to make me feel that if I had this to come back to I could go out in the world and do anything.

I love Petworth. I visited there when I was an Art Student at Brighton. The House and Gardens are magnificent. Turner painted them.

What a wonderful, long history of care these stately gardens have. Generations of dedicated hands, finessing something that has its own life and will. It must be an honor to work in such heritage.

@@Roy-xc1mz Hi, the lady mentioned Trachelospermum, she planted it by the columns , so comes wintertime it is still green. In spring the beautiful white Wisteria blossoms.

That all-white design caught my heart that I literally forgot to breath. Anotherworldly, beyond imagination.
Hat's off to Jonathan Arnold, the head gardener, and his array of gardeners. The amount of work that goes into this staggering. I'm sure this wonderful lady has contributed much to the gardens, but it is the gardeners who make those ideas come to life and maintains the whole place. Something like this is rarely a single-handed effort. One knows that the bulk of the work if not all of the work was done by the gardeners, but what rubs me the wrong way is how she seems to say "I" as if she did all the work herself. She gives herself away when she talks about recording the rainfall. To her credit though, I'm sure her ideas and deep pockets are something we don't see as much of any longer.
You are not being fair. Nobody thinks that Lady Egremont did all the work, but before she came to Petworth this area was little more than an abandoned, walled kitchen garden .
@@dreamok732 to be honest, nether is Lady Egremont. As I said in the original post, the use of I and me when talking about designing, planting etc. with giving little credit to the team of gardeners is offputting and rightly so!

Why must people be so bitter and twisted?
She names two Head Gardeners in a short monologue. The very term 'Head' gardener indicates a team. There is absolutely no pretence here that this is not a team effort.
As for using 'I'; it's totally appropriate when she's talking about her own ideas and visions for the place, which are then brought to reality by the team.
Why watch a video about a large and well-tended garden and then take umbrage with the (self-evident) fact that it requires a team of people to maintain?
If you don't like it, then only choose to watch videos about either small gardens that can be maintained by just the owner or large gardens that have gone to wrack and ruin.

Perhaps the British think this is acceptable but here in North America people use the wor "WE" no "I" to indicate when their vision was brought to life by a team of people. This is why people take umbrage - how would you like it if you put in years of effort and helped design things and the owner only credited themselves and one other person instead of saying it was a team effort?

I've never seen trachelospermum with racemes before. Beautiful.
I had to rewind that bit too, confusing but it's definitely wisteria. I think she may have meant the trachelospermum creates columns of evergreen interest in the winter time and also has perfumed flowers on it in the summer but the racemes hanging overhead in the video are wisteria to me.
@@soulgirlktf I wondered if there might have been dual plantings or a mix up. Might be a great idea for prolonging fragrance and bloom time..
