I am 41 yrs old, been fishing my entire life. Hell, I was even a fly fishing guide in Colorado for a few yaers. Now, I am back in my home state of Michigan. I fish a lot of musky and still chase trout as well. Bass fishing has always been a time passer for me while i waited for a musky trip or for salmon run. Over the past few years ive taken a liking to bass fishing more and more. I am amazed at how little I know lol. Recently bought a new Tracker 175 txw and a handful of bass rods/reels and I am finding myself absorbing as much info from your channel as i can. keep it up!! your knowlege and the way you present it, is awesome! I do however have a question on selecting a good bait casting rod/reel. maybe you made a show on this? I own a ton of bait casting musky gear. nothing small enough to throw any bass tackle. what is your recomendation? thinking of rod/reel around 300 bucks. I,m not quite sure on line weight and length. mostly fishing liht jigs 1/4oz and some cranks. lots of smallies up here in northern Michigan!!! thanks for allyou do!! ps sorry for typing errors. Pur my finger in table saw recently.
Just moved here from England , trying to learn all I can about Bass fishing . Great video yet again 👍. Yourself and Tacklejunky81 the best 2 out there. ( just my opinion ). Look forward to your next video 👍👍👍👍👍
@@johnstrand2247 I haven't caught anything on jerkbait either and I always try them. I have like 20 different ones from different brands and sizes but nothing works.
I rarely fish for bass but I almost use the exact opposite of what you suggest typically. In muddy water I typically use more natural colored baits. Most of their natural diet is not brightly colored things; also, if the water is dark and muddy not much light penetrates the water. Without light, bright colors are not bright. I will sometimes use bright colors when the water is clear and the fish seem picky. Without the clear water the colors dont really give you that extra flash like they do in clear water.
I don't use jerkbaits much but I had a thought about how you were talking about modifying them and the problems with those stick on weights. You could probably get some JB Weld Kwik and dab a small strip on there and if you find it to be too much you can scrape some off with a razor after it has set?
That's interesting about your rod choice...my absolute favorite jerkbait rod that I've ever used (and I have used lots of rods for it) is a 6'10" medium extra fast. I have landed way more fish on this rod then anything else.
Would you go with a shorter rod for a kayak? But still a med/mod rod. I saw some fish on my fish finder 2d. Turned around spot lock my new motorguide (thanks for ur video of ur set up) seen them on a livescope some one let me borrow. I caught 3 of them on a jerkbait. First time to catch a jb. It was so cool finding them knew I needed a spending bait and catching them. Thanks for your videos.
Do you fish a plastic jerk bait the same way? I just started to fish plastic jerkbaits , Could use a little info on how to use want to use a plastic jerk bait instead of a regular hard jerk bait!! You always have great videos and great information thank you very much ..
Very soft fast/extra fast rod>moderate cranking rod for jerkbaits. With moderate rods you end up pulling the bait and not really snapping it to get sharp side to side darting. And they just feel like garbage when you're snapping the rod and putting in handle turns in between snaps to pick up some of the slack line.
That's only if you don't do it on a slack line. You need a moderate rod or you increase the chance of pulling the lure away from the fish before it gets it good.
Gene, have u seen these Double-Sided Tackle Trays by Piscifun. I have 2 of them. 3600 in size. I can put a lot of jerkbaits in one box. Space saver for me since im a bank fisherman. I teally like them. Just thought i would share some info to you and your channel. Thanks for the video too!
Gene: I use the tiny rubber bands that my daughter used to use for pony tails to band the hooks on treble hook baits together. They rarely hang to each other that way.
@flukemaster I gotta ask, how the hell do you get your boat to be perfectly still on the water when you're talking in some of these in the beginning of the video LOL
@Flukemaster Is the jerk/pause retrieve used only when targeting large mouth bass???? I've seen jerkbaits reeled in ( straight retrieve ) and get demolished by Stripers , Pike , Walleye, trout .....just curious if it's just bass that react to the pause ?
I am wondering that too. I have a friend who fishes them with no pause and he's cought 4 bass that way. I do the pause method and have only foul hooked 1 bass by accidentally running into the side of him.
Liked the video. Began jerkbaiting last Winter. Had much more success than this Winter. Question, some say to move the jerkbait a few inches in the midst of jerking and, others say don't move the bait at all while jerking. What are your thoughts on moving the bait maybe twice for a few inches while jerkbait fishing! Thanks!
First of all I stop using a jerkbait when the water reaches 50 but prior to that the cold the water the softer I jerk and the longer the pauses. I don’t care how for it moves. I care how fast it moves.
so muddy water use bright color lures? or muddy waters use darker colored lures? or overcast days dark colored lures? blue bird skies transparent or brightly colored lures???so confused right now
Hey Gene how's the evinrude? How many hours now? Ive been thinking about repowering my old ranger, new ones are to dang expensive, with a 150 ho. Closest weight, only about 30 pounds heavier.
Last time I bought some they didn’t stick at all right out of the package. It has nothing to do with storage storm just had a bad run of them. You can still use them if you use superglue but it’s pretty much permanent.
You demonstrated fishing a jerk bait out in the middle of the lake. I don't have a boat and have to fish from the bank. Is jerk bait still good for a bank fisherman?
MikeRCJ in slightly stained shallow water...4 feet or less....you can absolutely slay the big ones like that...they see soooo many jigs, worms, and chatterbaits, it’s a different presentation that works...keep it small though...a 3-4 inch jerk bait in natural colors or the old black or dark green back with silver sides...
That split ring tip for adding weight to the bait is gold. Simple and brilliant. Can't believe I didn't think of it, but I'm glad you did. Thanks.
The Jerkbait is probably my favorite lure. I can catch fish year round with it.
I do my best with a jerk on each end of the rod.

NR T check out Tactical Bassin.
Came here to give the same advice
This actually turned out to be a good, useful video. Thanks. I didn't expect it.
My favorite videos on TH-cam on fishing
That intro is exactly what my box of jerkbaits looks like 🤣 time for some early spring cleaning and organizing.
Been using Megabass Vision 110 and 110+1 baits for years, they’re amazing
In three years, I have caught one Catfish on a Mega 110. Can't figure why they don't work on my lake unless it's because the water is always dirty.
@@johnstrand2247 I haven't caught anything on jerkbait either and I always try them. I have like 20 different ones from different brands and sizes but nothing works.
What’s not amazing is that price ! Sheeesh
Best info on jerkbaits yet keep em coming
Not gonna lie I love you. the No guitar intro not so much. Graphics are on point as well as you as always

Yup tactical bassin goes by that theory too, darker more natural looking bait in low visibility water.
Please add your specific colors you recommend in the description. Makes it much easier for us when browsing colors
Honored sir to have gotten to really talk with you in Knoxville can't wait to hang out more.
Thanks man. It was great to get to know you a little better. You've got a good thing going brother. Stay with it.

Yep
That's right. A medium moderate don't seem right does it? That's more of a crankin Rod.
Ideal is to have enough speed in the tip to keep them pinned but enough flex through the rod to keep from bending hooks
Same here brother. Don't let doubt ruin a good thing
Do you only use this for jerkbaita
Would you go with a shorter rod for a kayak? But still a med/mod rod. I saw some fish on my fish finder 2d. love the videos always learn something new. would love to get an afternoon fishing with you if ever make it up to pennsylvania
What about using lead wire that fly tiers use around the front hook shank?

Lead golf tape is another great cheap option for tuning lures
Good information as usual. Thanks! On what body of water was this video filmed?
Gene, have u seen these Double-Sided Tackle Trays by Piscifun. I have 2 of them. 3600 in size. I can put a lot of jerkbaits in one box. Space saver for me since im a bank fisherman. I teally like them. Just thought i would share some info to you and your channel. Thanks for the video too!
Always good videos. Thank you!
Try tungsten putty from Hobby Lobby or Big Carp Tackle.
You're the man Gene!
Great video ordering some stickers and a hat soon!
Great video brother. Super informative

@flukemaster I gotta ask, how the hell do you get your boat to be perfectly still on the water when you're talking in some of these in the beginning of the video LOL
The one your talking at 6:20 is a strike kvd jerkbait
@Flukemaster Is the jerk/pause retrieve used only when targeting large mouth bass???? I've seen jerkbaits reeled in ( straight retrieve ) and get demolished by Stripers , Pike , Walleye, trout .....just curious if it's just bass that react to the pause ?

Hahah you should try to do some more intro's like this one. Funny stuff.

when you buy suspend strips put them in a small zip lock bag right away, heat/cold/ humidity will affect adhesion.
That’s is probably my problem
Last time I bought some they didn’t stick at all right out of the package. It has nothing to do with storage storm just had a bad run of them. You can still use them if you use superglue but it’s pretty much permanent.
where do u live if u don't mind? i want to be on the water on the 7th of february with just a sweatshirt on or on the water period...thx
Is this lake in canton ga?
At 6:27 I have that same jerkbait in that color it is a strike king kvd
Great video!
Thanks Gene
Gene, how do you mount your GoPro on the front of your boat?
I use a Yolotek Power Stick
Flukemaster oh nice! That’s awesome you have a spot in the front of the boat.
What a sight for sore eyes!!!!
The most relatable intro ever lmao
Copper belly on the bottom of lure . Works best for me.
I prefer A moderate-fast action rod myself the extra backbone is necessary for incorporating twitches .
You demonstrated fishing a jerk bait out in the middle of the lake. I don't have a boat and have to fish from the bank. Is jerk bait still good for a bank fisherman?
it will work but may get hung up in brush easily.
They do get snagged easily since they dont follow a direct path they swim erratically.
What lake were you at in this video?
Well with a name like Flukemaster can you fish a fluke the same way with a slow fall in colder water?
Exactly
In the wind I use a spinning rod with braid
that was one cool intro :-D
Where does the Rapala Original Minnow fall in all of this?
where are you in georgia
Do you tie your jerk baits or use a swivel?
Rattlin Rouge Baby!!
Floating VS suspending jerkbaits.. When would you choose one over the other?
Hate floating kind.
Only time I ever use floating is around smallmouth especially when they’re shallow
Mine are all hookup in my box to
so a medium fast action rod wouldn't work for jerkbaits?
Medium fast is perfect
0:07 literally my tackle box 😆
Man you need some hook protectors. Baits stuck together drive me crazy!
Shawn Lai I wish I had that kind of discipline. I just throw everything in the box at the end of the day!
Well this trip work in the river
Black with copper belly..
Where are you located in Ga?
Rome
Ok, that's just up the road from my home town. If you want to come fishing down on the Navy base in St Mary's, Ga, let me know.
Can I use jerkbaits on a spinning combo?
Best way to fish a jerkbait 90% of the time is on a medium fast spinning rod with 8 pound fluorocarbon line.
👍
First!!! Good video sir!!!
Dang! Buy some hook bonnets.
you no catch fish?
So nobody knows how to fish a jerkbait? If Flukemaster still wants to run it with me, hit me up. I'll take him to school for real for real.
